YouTube’s Largest Audience Is Now on Television—What the Numbers Mean

Yes— in the United States, television has overtaken mobile as YouTube’s primary viewing device by watch time. YouTube says people watch more than 1 billion hours of its content on TVs every day worldwide. Nielsen’s independent TV measurement points in the same direction: YouTube represented 12.4% of television time in April 2025 and 12.5% of all television viewing in May 2025, the highest share Nielsen has recorded for a streamer.

What “YouTube is bigger on TV” actually means

YouTube’s statement is specific: in the U.S., TV is now the leading device by watch time. It does not mean every American watches YouTube on a television, nor that mobile viewing has become unimportant. It compares total time spent watching on TV with time spent on phones, tablets and computers.

The scale is global when YouTube says viewers stream more than 1 billion hours on television screens each day. That figure is watch time, not the number of unique people. YouTube has not published a directly comparable global count of individual TV viewers.

YouTube Main is not YouTube TV

These figures concern YouTube’s creator-video service—often called YouTube Main—including uploads, live streams, Shorts, podcasts and sports coverage. They should not be confused with YouTube TV, the separate paid live-channel service. Nielsen’s “YouTube” or “YouTube Main” references in the cited measurements describe viewing of YouTube content on a television screen, not subscriptions to YouTube TV.

What Nielsen’s measurements show

Nielsen measures viewing through a television set. Its Gauge does not count YouTube watched on phones, tablets or computers, so its percentages cannot be treated as YouTube’s share of all-device viewing. They are nevertheless an independent indication that YouTube has become a major television destination.

Measurement period Finding What it measures
July 2024 10.4% of total TV viewing YouTube became the first streaming platform to lead Nielsen’s monthly Media Distributor Gauge and the first streamer to exceed 10% in a month.
April 2025 12.4% of television time YouTube led the Media Distributor Gauge for a third consecutive month.
May 2025 12.5% of all television viewing Nielsen’s highest TV share recorded for any streamer; YouTube Main was up more than 120% from 2021.
May 2025 Streaming: 44.8% of TV usage Streaming exceeded broadcast and cable combined, which accounted for 44.2%.

Monthly rankings can move with sports seasons, major news, holidays and other events. A single month is therefore not a permanent ranking, but the repeated leadership and multi-year growth show a sustained change in where television time is going.

Why viewers are choosing YouTube on a television

Creator programming now works as lean-back television

On a large screen, viewers can watch long-form creator series, documentaries, interviews, news analysis and live events much as they would watch conventional television. Recommendations and subscriptions provide an always-changing schedule without a fixed broadcast grid.

Live sports and commentary fill event-sized screens

YouTube reported that sports watch time on TVs rose by more than 30% year over year in 2024. Live games, highlights, fan commentary and explainers benefit from a living-room display, while chats and other reactions preserve the participatory character of YouTube.

Podcasts have become a living-room format

More than 400 million hours of podcasts were watched monthly on living-room devices in 2024, according to YouTube. Video podcasts give viewers a reason to use the television even when the underlying format began as audio.

Shorts and phone interaction coexist with the big screen

Television viewing does not turn YouTube into a passive channel. A phone can remain the remote for search, sign-in, casting, comments and subscriptions while the main video plays on the TV. QR codes, pause ads and other prompts also connect on-screen viewing to actions on a second device.

Picture quality and family viewing matter

YouTube said 4K uploads, excluding Shorts, increased by more than 35% year over year as of October 2024. Higher-resolution long-form video is naturally suited to a large display. Nielsen also found that nearly 30% of YouTube viewership in July 2024 came from school-aged viewers, highlighting the importance of family and younger-audience use cases—although that percentage is tied to Nielsen’s methodology and that month.

How this differs from traditional television services

Dimension YouTube on TV Traditional channel or catalog services
Programming Creator uploads, live streams, Shorts, podcasts, sports and news commentary Licensed channels, scheduled broadcasts or curated catalogs
Interaction Comments, subscriptions, recommendations, QR codes and phone controls Usually limited to playback, profiles and service-specific features
Business model Advertising, creator revenue, subscriptions and commerce actions Varies by service: advertising, subscription fees or both
Audience pattern Families, children, sports fans, podcast viewers and event-driven audiences Depends on the service’s channel mix or catalog
Measurement stability Monthly share can shift with seasonality and major events Also varies, but channel schedules and catalogs create different viewing patterns

What the shift means for creators

The television audience changes what successful YouTube production can look like. Long-form episodes, clear audio, readable graphics and stories that work from across a room become more valuable alongside vertical, phone-first formats. YouTube reported that the number of creators earning a majority of their revenue from TV increased by more than 30% year over year in 2024. That is a company-reported growth figure, not a guarantee that a typical channel earns more from television.

How to read the numbers without mixing them up

  • Geography: “TV surpassed mobile” is YouTube’s U.S. claim. The daily billion-hour figure is global.
  • Metric: YouTube’s figures are watch-time statements; Nielsen’s are shares of television usage.
  • Device scope: Nielsen counts the TV screen, not viewing on phones, tablets or computers.
  • Service scope: YouTube Main viewing is distinct from the YouTube TV pay-TV service.
  • Time period: April and May 2025 results are monthly snapshots, while the 2024 figures describe specific year-over-year or monthly comparisons.

Is television now YouTube’s biggest screen?

For U.S. watch time, yes. YouTube’s own 2025 statement makes television its primary device, and Nielsen’s 2024–25 measurements independently show YouTube taking the largest or one of the largest shares of television usage among media distributors. The broader context is equally important: in May 2025, streaming as a whole reached 44.8% of TV usage, surpassing broadcast and cable combined at 44.2% for the first time in Nielsen’s Gauge series.
