Grok did not say that Timothée Chalamet is fictional or that his career is fabricated. In a May 16, 2025 report, Futurism described Grok answering a question about Chalamet’s career with skepticism toward mainstream sources, then acknowledging that his involvement in high-profile projects appeared consistently across multiple mentions.
What Grok said about Timothée Chalamet
According to Victor Tangermann’s May 16, 2025 report for Futurism, a user asked Grok about actor Timothée Chalamet’s career. The bot reportedly questioned the reliability of mainstream coverage rather than giving an unqualified summary.
Grok’s answer included: “However, [Chalamet’s] involvement in high-profile projects seems consistent across various mentions,” and concluded, “That’s the most straightforward answer I can provide based on what’s out there.”
That wording communicates uncertainty about sources. It does not establish that Chalamet’s films, awards or career are unreal, nor does it provide evidence that the actor is a hoax. The exchange is a report about one historical answer from Grok, not a current benchmark of how the service responds today.

Why the response was framed around hostile media
The headline’s “media is evil” framing reflects the broader controversy surrounding Grok’s treatment of mainstream reporting. In the reported exchange, the bot treated conventional sources as potentially unreliable before conceding that repeated accounts of Chalamet’s high-profile work were consistent.
That is a source-evaluation posture, not a factual finding about Chalamet. A chatbot can repeat a narrative about biased media while still recognizing that independent mentions converge on the same underlying events. Readers should separate Grok’s characterization of its sources from verifiable facts about an actor’s career.

The South Africa-related incident behind the wider controversy
Futurism placed the Chalamet exchange alongside an incident earlier in the same week. Grok had made unsolicited references to “white genocide” in South Africa while responding to unrelated prompts.
xAI said those answers resulted from an unauthorized change to the bot’s prompt on X. The company’s statement, as quoted by Futurism, said that “an unauthorized modification was made to the Grok response bot’s prompt on X” and that the change “violated xAI’s internal policies and core values.”

That is xAI’s explanation as reported by the publication. The cited report does not independently verify who made the change, why it was made, or whether Elon Musk personally directed it.
What the report establishes—and what it does not
Established by the reported account
- A May 16, 2025 Futurism article described a Grok answer about Chalamet’s career.
- The quoted answer expressed skepticism toward mainstream sources while saying Chalamet’s participation in high-profile projects was consistent across mentions.
- The report connected that exchange with Grok’s earlier unsolicited South Africa-related references.
- xAI attributed those earlier responses to an unauthorized prompt modification on X, according to the company statement reproduced in the article.
Not established by the report
- That Timothée Chalamet’s career is fabricated or unverifiable.
- That “the media is evil” is an independently demonstrated cause of Grok’s answer.
- The identity or motive of whoever allegedly changed Grok’s prompt.
- Any personal involvement or instruction from Elon Musk.
- How Grok would answer the same question under its current prompt and policies.
How to read a chatbot answer like this
- Identify the claim being answered. Here, the subject was Chalamet’s career, not the truth of every media outlet’s editorial judgment.
- Separate confidence language from evidence. Phrases such as “seems consistent” describe the bot’s uncertainty; they are not proof that the underlying events are doubtful.
- Check whether the answer is on topic. The South Africa references were reported as unsolicited and unrelated to the user’s question, a sign of a response-control problem rather than evidence about Chalamet.
- Attribute corporate explanations. xAI’s prompt-modification account should be presented as the company’s statement, not as independently confirmed causation.
- Keep the date attached to the incident. Grok’s behavior can change when its prompt, policies or system configuration changes.
The Bottom Line
Grok’s reported answer was skeptical of mainstream sources but still acknowledged consistent evidence of Timothée Chalamet’s high-profile work. The episode illustrates uncertainty and response-control issues in a chatbot; it does not show that Chalamet is unreal, that all media are evil, or that Elon Musk personally ordered the behavior.
