Yes—with a qualification: Google closed a mobile-browser workaround that let some non-Premium users keep YouTube audio playing after switching apps or locking their phones. Reliable, officially supported background playback is a paid YouTube benefit. The change was confirmed in early 2026, but it does not mean every browser stopped working on every device at the same moment; residual browser behavior is inconsistent and not a dependable free feature.

What changed?
Some viewers used to open YouTube in a mobile browser, start a video, then minimize the browser or lock the phone and continue listening. Google confirmed that it updated the experience so non-Premium users could no longer rely on background playback through mobile browsers. YouTube’s mobile-browser help page now identifies background playback as a Premium feature.
This is better understood as closing a workaround than as a brand-new restriction on a feature that had been universally free. Background playback was already a Premium benefit in YouTube’s mobile apps; the browser route had let some free users get similar behavior in certain circumstances. Reports identified browsers such as Samsung Internet, Brave, and Microsoft Edge among those affected, but YouTube has not published a browser-by-browser compatibility list. Google’s confirmation was reported by Android Authority.
In practice, a video may pause when you switch apps or lock the screen, and its lock-screen or notification controls may disappear. You may need to reopen YouTube to resume. If playback still works in one browser, that shows only that the browser and YouTube are behaving that way for your device and account at that moment—not that YouTube officially offers free background playback there.

Background playback is not the same as picture-in-picture
Background playback means audio continues after you leave YouTube or lock the phone, often with controls in the lock screen, notification shade, Control Center, headphones, or car interface. A browser tab remaining open, or audio continuing while the display is still on, does not necessarily mean locked-screen background playback is supported.
Picture-in-picture (PiP) keeps video in a small floating window while you use other apps. It is a separate feature: seeing a floating YouTube window does not show that audio will keep playing once the phone is locked. YouTube’s Premium benefits documentation describes PiP separately from background play. Its current guidance allows PiP for non-music content on supported iOS and Android devices, while PiP for music content is a Premium benefit. Availability and behavior can also depend on device, software, and location.

Which membership fits your viewing?
YouTube offers two relevant paid options. The right one depends especially on whether you listen to music or mostly watch creator videos, lectures, and podcasts.

Premium Lite: potentially enough for non-music listening
YouTube announced in February 2026 that Premium Lite would gain background playback and downloads. Its current Premium Lite help page describes those benefits as applying to most videos, not every video. Shorts and music content are excluded, as are some user videos containing music-partner material—for example, certain covers, dance videos, or videos with popular music in the background. Lite does not include YouTube Music Premium, and it does not provide the full Premium package of ad-free viewing and features.

If your listening is mostly lectures, commentary, tutorials, gaming, or podcasts, Lite may suit you where it is offered. If you primarily listen to songs, official music videos, covers, DJ sets, or YouTube Music, full YouTube Premium is the more appropriate option. Check YouTube’s Premium Lite signup page for availability and the current price in your market; availability and pricing are location-dependent and can change.
Full Premium: the more complete option
Full YouTube Premium includes background playback, ad-free YouTube viewing, offline downloads, and YouTube Music Premium, along with other features that can vary by platform and location. It is the clearer choice if you want locked-screen playback for music as well as ordinary videos. Check YouTube’s Premium page for the current plans and price available to your account. Do not assume a price quoted for another country, purchase channel, or earlier date applies to you.

What can you still do without a membership?
- Watch or listen with YouTube in the foreground. Ordinary playback remains available, with ads and without a promise that audio continues after you switch apps or lock the screen.
- Use PiP where supported. This can keep a small video visible while you use other apps, but it is not a substitute for locked-screen audio, and music has separate restrictions.
- Try a browser only if you accept that it may stop working. Some browser-specific behavior has persisted or reappeared for some users. For example, an April 2026 report described background playback working for some non-Premium users in Edge Canary, a pre-release browser channel. That is not a YouTube-supported free option or evidence that the policy changed. The Edge Canary report illustrates why browser results can vary, not why they can be relied on.
Browser behavior can depend on the browser version, operating system, account, rollout, or YouTube experiment. A workaround might disappear after a YouTube or browser update, behave differently after a screen lock than during app switching, or fail on another phone. Do not treat a modified YouTube client or unofficial APK as a safe equivalent: unofficial software can carry security, privacy, malware, and account risks.
If you already pay for Premium and playback stops
A membership does not prevent every device or account problem. In the YouTube app, check the following:

- Tap your profile picture and open Paid memberships. Confirm that the membership is active and belongs to the Google account currently signed in. If you subscribe through a family plan or another purchase channel, verify that the account has access.
- Open Settings → Background & Downloads → Background Play. Choose Always on, or select Headphones or external speakers if you want playback limited to those devices. Choose Off only if you do not want background play.
- Update the YouTube app, then sign out and back in to the account with the membership.
- Check whether another app is taking audio focus. Also review device battery-saver or background restrictions, background data, notifications, and media-control settings.
- Restart the app or phone and try again. YouTube’s background-play troubleshooting guidance also lists account, app, connection, and device checks.
Shorts are an exception: YouTube says background play is not available in the Shorts player. Also distinguish app behavior from browser behavior; a Premium account may be signed into the browser, but a browser issue does not by itself show that the app’s membership settings are wrong.
Why one browser may still work
If YouTube continues in Brave but pauses in Chrome, or works until you lock the screen, the difference points to browser- or device-specific behavior. It does not establish an official entitlement. Google’s policy direction and YouTube’s help documentation support the same practical conclusion: for reliable, supported mobile background playback, use an eligible paid membership.
YouTube’s timeline also helps explain why advice online may conflict. It confirmed the browser change in late January and early February 2026. Premium Lite gained background play and downloads later in February, with YouTube clarifying exclusions in March. Reports of a browser-specific workaround followed in April. Those developments are not a reversal of the Premium requirement.

- Mostly music or music videos? Choose full YouTube Premium if you want background playback in YouTube, or consider YouTube Music Premium if your need is specifically music listening rather than general YouTube videos.
- Mostly podcasts, lectures, tutorials, or creator videos? Check whether Premium Lite is available in your country and whether its music and Shorts exclusions affect what you watch.
- Only need this occasionally? Stay with the free service if foreground playback or supported PiP is adequate; do not count on a browser workaround.
- Need a dependable solution? Use the official membership whose features match your content, rather than relying on an experimental browser channel.
