Short answer: YouTube has revived in-app video sharing and messaging, but not as a universal replacement for WhatsApp, iMessage, Messenger or Discord. The feature was first reported in November 2025 for adults in Ireland and Poland. YouTube’s later Help documentation lists a much wider group of eligible countries, including the United States, while still warning that access is limited and account-dependent.
What YouTube has actually brought back
YouTube calls the product “Video sharing and messaging on YouTube”. It lets people share YouTube videos, Shorts and livestreams with another account, then discuss that content in an in-app conversation.
This is a narrower revival than the old direct-message system. The new experience is built around YouTube content rather than functioning as a general-purpose social inbox. It includes invite-based conversations, text replies, blocking, reporting and controls for accepting or declining message requests.
Why this is called a return from the dead
YouTube previously offered direct messaging, later removed it, and has now begun testing a redesigned sharing-and-chat experience. A November 2025 report from Phandroid described the initial test in Ireland and Poland and placed it in the context of YouTube’s earlier product cycle. That historical account is secondary reporting; YouTube’s current Help pages are the authority for present eligibility and controls.

Where the feature is available now
The initial Ireland-and-Poland test is no longer the whole picture. In documentation available on August 16, 2026, YouTube listed these eligible countries and territories:
- American Samoa, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czechia, Denmark, Estonia and Finland
- France, Germany, Greece, Guam, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein and Lithuania
- Luxembourg, Malta, the Netherlands, Northern Mariana Islands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Puerto Rico, Romania and Singapore
- Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States and the U.S. Virgin Islands
Country eligibility does not guarantee access for every account. YouTube says the feature is not available to everyone and may remain an experiment. Regional Help pages can also differ slightly as the rollout changes, so check the version relevant to your location.
Who can use YouTube messaging?
YouTube’s documented requirements are:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You are signed in to a Google Account associated with a YouTube channel.
- You are in an eligible country or territory.
- You are using the latest version of the YouTube mobile app.
- Your individual account has been included in the rollout.
Age verification, channel status and account-level experiment enrollment can each affect access. Being in the United States or another listed market is therefore necessary but not sufficient.

The Brand Account rule is unclear
YouTube’s own Help versions contain conflicting language. One version says the feature is available only to owners of channels connected to Brand Accounts, not moderators or delegates. Another localized version says it is unavailable for Brand Accounts. Because the documentation does not resolve that contradiction, treat the messaging controls shown in your account as decisive and do not assume that either Brand Account rule applies universally.

How to start a conversation on mobile
Share a video, Short or livestream
- Open the current YouTube mobile app.
- Open the video, Short or livestream you want to send.
- Tap Share.
- Select an eligible contact, or choose the option to invite someone to message on YouTube through another app.
Because this is an experiment, button names and their position can vary by operating system, app version and account cohort.

Invite someone to chat
- Open YouTube and tap Messages in the upper-right area, if it appears.
- Tap Invite to chat.
- Share the generated invitation link.
- Wait for the recipient to allow or decline the request.
An invitation link remains valid for seven days. If the recipient accepts, both participants can share YouTube content and exchange messages inside YouTube.
What the recipient sees
The recipient can allow the conversation, decline it or choose Not now and decide later. YouTube says the sender’s channel information may not be shared when the recipient selects Not now. A person who cannot open an invitation may be outside the eligible region, under 18, missing a YouTube channel, signed out, blocked, using an unsupported app version or attempting to use a link after its seven-day validity period.
Privacy, safety and identity controls
This is moderated platform messaging, not an end-to-end encrypted private messenger. YouTube’s Help documentation says messages are encrypted while sent and stored, but may be scanned or reviewed for Community Guidelines and safety enforcement. Message content is not used for ad targeting, according to the same documentation.

Users can block another account and report problematic messages or conversations. Blocking can also affect the blocked account’s visibility in live chats, comments, mentions and related YouTube interactions. Shared links and account settings can expose channel information, so review your channel-visibility choices before sending content to someone you do not know.
Deleting a chat does not erase it everywhere
You can delete an entire conversation from your own inbox. That action does not necessarily remove the conversation from the other participant’s view. A recipient may have seen a message before you unsent it, and YouTube indicates that the other participant may be able to see that a message was unsent. Treat deletion as an inbox-management action, not a guarantee that every copy has disappeared.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Is it available on desktop?
YouTube’s published setup instructions are written for the mobile app. Do not assume that the same messaging controls exist on YouTube’s desktop website. If the option is missing in the app, YouTube’s guidance is to update the app first; an update still cannot force an account into an experiment that has not been enabled for it.

Why YouTube is trying messaging again
Sharing is central to YouTube’s existing behavior: viewers already send videos through other apps, and creators already depend on links to start conversations. The tested feature keeps that exchange inside YouTube and attaches the chat to the content being discussed. That makes it useful for sending a Short to a friend or talking about a livestream, but it does not turn YouTube into a customer-support inbox or a replacement for business email.
The 2025 secondary report said the revival followed user interest, but that rationale should be treated as attributed reporting rather than a universal YouTube statement. YouTube has not established a guaranteed global rollout date in the documentation cited here.
What to do if you cannot find Messages
- Update the YouTube mobile app from your device’s app store.
- Confirm that the account is 18 or older and signed in to a YouTube channel.
- Check whether your country appears on YouTube’s current eligible-region list.
- Look for Messages near the top-right of the app and for Share options on videos, Shorts and livestreams.
- Check whether an account-type restriction, blocked contact or expired invitation explains the problem.
- If every requirement is met but the controls remain absent, the account may simply not be included in the limited rollout.
Is YouTube messaging available in the United States?
Yes, the United States appears on YouTube’s documented eligible-country list. That is a country-level eligibility statement, not a promise that every U.S. account can use the feature. Age, channel association, app version, account type and experiment enrollment still apply.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does YouTube messaging replace WhatsApp or Messenger?
No. It is designed mainly for sharing YouTube videos, Shorts and livestreams and discussing them inside YouTube, not for general-purpose messaging.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can I delete a message for everyone?
Not reliably. You can remove a conversation from your own inbox, but the other participant may still have seen it or retain the conversation, and may see that a message was unsent.
The Bottom Line
YouTube’s direct messaging revival is real, but it remains a selective, mobile-first experiment. The United States and many other regions are now listed as eligible, yet access is still account-specific. Use it for conversations attached to YouTube content, and expect YouTube moderation and limits rather than the privacy or universality of a dedicated messaging service.
