YouTube’s Super Resolution uses AI to generate a higher-resolution version of some low-resolution uploads, while preserving the original file and upload resolution. Announced on October 29, 2025 as part of a package focused on YouTube on TV, the feature was initially described as upscaling videos uploaded below 1080p from standard definition (SD) to high definition (HD). YouTube said support for resolutions up to 4K was a future goal—not a guarantee that every video would receive 4K enhancement.
What YouTube Super Resolution does—and what it doesn’t
YouTube describes Super Resolution as a visual enhancement that uses Google-built technology to make low-resolution uploads look as if they were filmed in HD. In plain language, AI upscaling creates a higher-resolution presentation from a lower-resolution source. It does not recover detail that was never captured in the original, and the result should not be treated as equivalent to footage originally recorded at the higher resolution.
YouTube’s October 29, 2025 announcement said the feature would initially apply to videos uploaded below 1080p, upscaling SD to HD. The announcement described resolutions up to 4K as a goal for the near future. It did not establish 4K enhancement as generally available or say that all eligible videos would receive it. YouTube’s current video and audio quality enhancements help page says enhancements are not applied to every video.
YouTube says it keeps both the original files and original video resolution intact. Viewers can switch between the enhanced version and the original upload resolution through the video’s quality settings, according to the October 2025 announcement and current Help documentation. No independent image-quality test or viewer-response study is established in the cited sources, so the enhancement should not be assumed to look better in every case.

How to choose the original resolution or enhanced version
When Super Resolution is available for a video, YouTube says viewers can switch between it and the original upload resolution in video quality settings. The exact device-by-device controls are not specified in the current Help page. If the enhancement option is not shown, that page does not establish whether the cause is the video, the device, the account, or rollout availability.
How creators can manage YouTube’s future enhancements
Creators can control visual and audio enhancement defaults for future uploads in YouTube Studio on a computer. The controls do not change videos already uploaded or ads. YouTube also cautions that turning off channel enhancements may mean viewers cannot use some separate features, such as Super Resolution.

YouTube notes that individual accessibility settings may take precedence in some cases. Its Help page does not specify which devices, regions, or accounts currently support Super Resolution, or when rollout will be complete. YouTube describes rollouts generally as gradual launches that may begin with a small percentage of viewers or creators and grow over time; that guidance explains why experiences can differ, but does not confirm Super Resolution coverage on a particular device or in a particular region. YouTube reported that channels earning six figures or more from TV screens were up over 45%. This is YouTube’s global comparison of USD earnings from July 2024 through June 2025 against July 2023 through June 2024; it is not a viewership statistic or a general revenue average. The announcement also reported 35 billion hours of shopping-related video watched in the prior 12 months, without specifying exact dates for that period. That figure measures viewing time, not purchases or conversions. Both figures come from YouTube’s October 29, 2025 announcement.
Is Super Resolution only for TVs?
The feature was introduced in an announcement focused on YouTube on TV, but the current Help page does not define supported devices or say that Super Resolution is exclusive to TVs. Nor does it confirm availability on all screens. The most precise answer is that YouTube announced it as part of its TV feature package and currently documents the enhancement and its controls, while leaving device, regional, and rollout coverage unspecified.

In his event article, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan wrote that more than 20 million videos are uploaded to the platform each day. That is his statement in the 2026 article, not an independently audited statistic. YouTube also reported in 2026 that creators had run more than 40 million A/B testing experiments since the feature launched in 2024, and that 72% of U.S. video posters ages 14–44 had used AI to help create or edit during the previous year, as summarized from YouTube’s first GenAI trends report. These figures concern later creator tools and AI use, not Super Resolution’s quality or adoption. The separate announcements are documented by Google’s Made on YouTube 2026 update, Neal Mohan’s event article, and YouTube’s creator-tools announcement.
