Some viewers using YouTube on TVs reported ad waits with timers of roughly 90 seconds or more in April 2026. YouTube said it had neither introduced nor tested a 90-second non-skippable ad format; it attributed the abnormal timers to a bug and said a fix was rolling out. The reports described a real viewing problem, but they do not establish a permanent YouTube ad policy—or prove that each viewer was watching one 90-second commercial.
What viewers saw—and what the timer can’t prove
Reports in early April described TV viewers encountering long ad interruptions, with timers showing roughly 90 seconds or more and no immediate Skip option. Some reports said the interruption seemed to continue beyond the initial timer before skipping became possible. YouTube’s explanation, reported on April 9–10, was that inaccurate or inflated timers caused the behavior—not that the company was testing a 90-second non-skippable format. Coverage later reported that a fix was rolling out; that is not the same as confirmation that every affected device was fixed.
A timer alone cannot tell you what was happening behind the screen. Four different things can be mistaken for “a 90-second ad”:
- Ad creative: the duration of one individual advertisement.
- Ad break: the combined time for one or more ads shown together.
- Skip delay: how long a viewer must wait before a Skip control appears.
- Displayed timer: the countdown shown by the app, which may not accurately reflect the other three.
The reports and YouTube’s response do not establish that the timer represented a single 90-second commercial. Nor do they provide a complete account of how many ads were in each break or how many devices were affected. Initial reports and YouTube’s denial and explanation should be read together.

The timeline: 30-second ads, then anomalous 90-second timers
- March 2026: Reports described a rollout of 30-second non-skippable ads on connected-TV versions of the YouTube app. Android Central’s report concerned TV viewing, not a change that necessarily applied to every YouTube device or viewer.
- April 8–10: Viewers reported apparent 90-second-or-longer unskippable waits on TV apps and connected devices.
- April 9–10: YouTube said it had no 90-second non-skippable ad format and was not testing one. It attributed the unusual timers to a bug.
- By April 10–13: Reporting said a fix was rolling out. The available information does not establish a universal resolution across all devices and regions.
The nearby rollout of 30-second TV ads may have made the 90-second reports sound like a new ad tier, but it does not prove that YouTube intentionally approved 90-second spots. The defensible conclusion is narrower: viewers reported anomalous waits, and YouTube said a timer bug—not a new 90-second format—was responsible.
What YouTube’s ad-format documentation says
YouTube and Google document several ad formats and buying options, but ad inventory rules are not a promise that every viewer will see a particular ad length. Google’s YouTube TV ad-format documentation describes 30- and 60-second formats for specified reservation lineups. YouTube’s general video ad-format guide describes non-skippable in-stream ads and bumper ads of six seconds or less. Standard skippable in-stream ads generally become skippable after five seconds, though eligibility and placement vary.

- YouTube on TV is the regular YouTube app running on a smart TV, streaming device or game console. This is the app most relevant to the reported incident.
- YouTube TV is Google’s separate paid live-TV service.
- YouTube TV ad inventory is an advertising category in Google’s documentation. Its format rules do not mean every person using the YouTube app on a television is watching the YouTube TV service.
TV-specific advertising formats and a TV interface can make longer breaks or delayed skip controls more noticeable. But the exact technical cause of the reported timers is not independently established; the bug explanation should be attributed to YouTube.

Was this happening to every TV viewer?
No public evidence cited for these reports establishes that all smart TVs, streaming sticks, consoles, countries or accounts were affected. Reports included TV-connected versions of YouTube, but they do not provide a verified device-by-device list, a prevalence estimate or a complete geographic map. Treat the incident as reported behavior—not a universal rollout. Coverage of viewer reports documents the complaints, not the proportion of users who encountered them.
If an abnormal timer still appears
Try the ordinary, low-risk steps first. These may help with an app or device problem, but they cannot guarantee that a particular timer issue will be resolved:

- Update YouTube and the TV, streaming device or console software.
- Restart the device, rather than only closing and reopening the app.
- Force-close YouTube, then launch it again.
- If the problem persists, sign out of YouTube and sign back in.
- Check YouTube on another device. If the timer is normal there, that points toward a device or app-specific issue, though it does not prove the cause.
- Send feedback through YouTube’s Help or in-app feedback options. Include the date and time, device model, app version, displayed timer, whether Skip appeared and how long the interruption lasted.
A screenshot or short recording can help document what the interface showed, provided it does not expose private account information. Avoid assuming that changing DNS settings, clearing a cache or reinstalling the app is a verified fix for this particular incident.

YouTube Premium: the clearest official option for ordinary YouTube videos
YouTube says Premium removes ordinary ads before and during videos on supported devices, including compatible smart TVs, streaming devices and consoles. Sign in to the YouTube app with the account that has Premium. It is the most direct official option for someone whose problem is advertising in ordinary YouTube videos. Premium does not make every promotion disappear: creator-read sponsorships and embedded promotions can remain, as can some live-event advertising and Primetime Channel ads. Membership pricing and plan availability depend on location and signup route, so check the live Premium page rather than relying on a price quoted for another market or time.
Premium Lite: narrower coverage, where available
Premium Lite may suit viewers who mostly watch general creator videos and want a lower-priced official option. YouTube says most videos in covered categories can be watched without ads, but ads may still appear on music content and Shorts, and while searching or browsing. It does not include YouTube Music Premium. Check the current Premium Lite details and availability information; availability and benefits can vary by market and change over time.
YouTube TV is a different subscription
Buying YouTube TV does not remove ads from its live and recorded television programming. Premium and YouTube TV are separate services aimed at different viewing: Premium covers eligible use of ordinary YouTube, while YouTube TV provides live-TV channels. A person subscribed to both can still encounter ads in YouTube TV programming. See YouTube’s explanation of how the services differ.
Unofficial blockers and modified apps
Ad blockers, DNS filtering and modified clients are not dependable universal fixes for TV viewing. Compatibility varies across platforms, and a method that works on one Android/Google TV setup may not work on Roku, Apple TV, Samsung, LG or a game console. These approaches can disrupt playback or skip controls and may involve sideloading, security or account risks. YouTube’s paid-service terms also restrict technology used to automatically tune away from or skip ads on recorded programs in the YouTube TV context. For a supported route on the regular YouTube app, Premium is the clearer choice.
The takeaway
The April 2026 reports were not invented: some TV viewers encountered apparent 90-second-or-longer ad waits. But a displayed countdown is not proof of a single 90-second commercial, and YouTube said it had neither launched nor tested a 90-second non-skippable format. Its explanation was a bug that produced inaccurate timers, with a fix reported as rolling out. The incident should not be presented as a permanent policy or as something known to affect every TV viewer.
