Short answer: Some YouTube TV “Zen” breaks now carry sponsor branding, but YouTube TV has not documented a universal replacement of every quiet clip with a conventional commercial. Zen footage is filler used during portions of live-TV commercial breaks; Google now formally sells a related YouTube TV format called Branded Slates, which overlays a sponsor logo on calming imagery. There is no documented setting to disable these breaks during live viewing.
What a YouTube TV Zen break actually is
A Zen break is a quiet scene—such as a landscape, fireplace or nature video—with ambient music that appears during part of a television commercial break. It is not a separate ad-free tier, a YouTube Premium benefit or a screensaver you selected.
The apparent purpose is to fill time when YouTube TV has no additional commercial to show. Community explanations describe this as unsold inventory or a short remaining gap in a network-supplied break. Google’s advertising system uses Dynamic Ad Insertion to place targeted video ads into live and recorded television, so the exact mix depends on the break and available inventory (Google Ads Help).
Why some Zen clips now look like advertisements
On June 19, 2023, 9to5Google reported viewers seeing Zen screens with sponsor language, including “This break brought to you by Progressive” (9to5Google). That report described sightings rather than a universal rollout.

Google’s current advertiser documentation provides stronger evidence that the commercial concept is real. Its YouTube TV ad-format page lists Branded Slates: calming images or videos shown during YouTube TV ad breaks with a logo overlay. Google describes reporting and measurement options and directs advertisers to its sales team (Google Ads Help).
That documentation does not establish that every subscriber, channel or break receives a branded slate. Community reports from 2025 and 2026 also describe ordinary, unbranded Zen clips continuing to appear.

Plain Zen, sponsored Zen and ordinary commercials
| What you see | Best description |
|---|---|
| Calming footage with no company name or logo | Plain Zen filler |
| Calming footage with a logo or “brought to you by” message | Sponsored Zen or a branded slate |
| A conventional sales message | Standard inserted commercial |
| An ad marker in an on-demand episode | On-demand advertising, governed by that playback version |
Calling every quiet clip an “ad” is therefore too broad. The meaningful change is that previously unbranded filler can now be used as branded advertising inventory.
Why YouTube TV uses Zen instead of another commercial
Linear channels control portions of their commercial windows, while YouTube TV may receive opportunities to sell local, targeted or platform-specific inventory. If inventory is unsold—or the remaining time is too short for another spot—filler avoids dead air and an abrupt return to the program. A sponsor logo lets that low-disruption interval produce advertising value without turning the entire screen into a conventional commercial.

Google has not published a detailed revenue split among YouTube TV, networks, affiliates and advertisers, so claims about who receives the money or whether sponsorship affects subscription prices would be speculation.
Does YouTube Premium remove Zen or YouTube TV ads?
No. YouTube Premium removes ads from ordinary YouTube videos, but Google says it does not remove advertising from live or recorded television on YouTube TV (YouTube TV Help). Buying Premium therefore will not make a YouTube TV live channel commercial-free.

Can you turn Zen breaks off?
There is no documented live-TV control that disables Zen clips or sponsored break content. YouTube TV Community guidance says these breaks cannot be removed from live playback (YouTube TV Community).
Live television
Live-TV commercials generally cannot be fast-forwarded. Changing channels is not a dependable workaround; the other channel may simply be in its own break.
DVR recordings
Add the program to your Library and open the actual recording. YouTube TV generally permits fast-forwarding through ads in DVR recordings.

On-demand versions
An episode labeled as available on demand may not be the same file as your DVR recording. Networks or YouTube TV can insert ads that cannot be skipped. Check that playback is coming from the Library recording before assuming fast-forward should work. YouTube TV explains these distinctions in its ad guidance (YouTube TV Help).
Why your experience may differ from another subscriber’s
- Channel and network break arrangements
- Local market and available advertising inventory
- Live, DVR or on-demand playback
- Program length and the seconds left in a break
- Device or app implementation
- Phased advertising tests and account-level availability
For that reason, one viewer can see plain Zen while another sees a branded slate, without either report disproving the other.
What to expect going forward
- Zen remains a break-filling experience, not a promise of commercial-free television.
- Some Zen scenes may include sponsor branding; others may remain unbranded.
- Google’s “Branded Slates” terminology confirms that sponsored calming visuals are an established YouTube TV ad format.
- There is no documented live-TV opt-out.
- Recording programs is the main built-in way to gain fast-forward control, subject to DVR versus on-demand availability.
- YouTube Premium does not change YouTube TV’s live or recorded-TV advertising.
If Zen branding is a deal-breaker
Stay with YouTube TV if its channel lineup and unlimited DVR matter more than occasional branded filler. An antenna with a DVR can reduce reliance on streaming inventory for local broadcast channels, but reception and channel coverage vary; examples include Tablo, AirTV and TiVo. Competing live-TV services such as Hulu + Live TV, Sling TV, Fubo, Philo and DIRECTV STREAM also carry advertising in linear programming, so switching services is not automatically an ad-free solution.
