YouTube TV’s “Last Channel” Shortcut: How to Return to the Previous Program

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

YouTube TV has a hidden “Last Channel” shortcut: while watching a program, switch to another and press and hold your remote’s OK/Select button to return to the one you were watching before. The feature was reported rolling out on February 16, 2024—not newly launched—and is a welcome convenience for people who move between live games, news channels, or other programs.

How to use YouTube TV’s Last Channel shortcut

  1. Open the YouTube TV app on a television and play a program.
  2. Switch to a different channel or video and start watching it.
  3. While the second program is playing, press and hold the remote’s OK/Select button. YouTube TV should return to the previous channel or video.

It is a long press, not an ordinary tap. A tap may open controls or do something else, depending on the device. The steps were reported by Droid Life on February 16, 2024.

What the shortcut does—and what it doesn’t

This is a quick way back to the immediately preceding viewing destination, similar to the “Last” or “Previous” control on a traditional cable remote. It is not a permanent list of recently watched channels, and the documented interaction uses the remote you already have rather than a dedicated physical Last button.

Action What is established
Return to the immediately previous program Yes; the 2024 report describes returning to the last channel or video.
Open a full recent-channel history Not established by the available feature description.
Rewind the previous live channel The shortcut itself is not described as a rewind control.
Work identically on every device Not established; the reported instructions concern the TV app and a remote with an OK/Select control.

Why it is useful for live TV

The shortcut is most helpful when two programs are competing for attention: checking another game during a timeout, comparing news coverage, or briefly switching away during a commercial. It saves a trip back through the guide each time. That small reduction in friction matters because live-TV viewers often expect channel-surfing controls familiar from cable, while streaming interfaces can make returning to a previous program less obvious.

#1 Best Overall
Roku Voice Remote, Replacement TV Remote Control
  • Easy voice search & control: Quickly search across thousands of top channels, play entertainment, control your streaming, and more with your voice
  • No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, control your Roku device, switch inputs on your Roku TV, and more—all in a tap
  • Pre-set channel shortcuts: Pre-set channel shortcuts let you launch popular streaming channels with the push of a button, all without having to scroll
  • Simple setup: Simply turn on your Roku device and pull the battery tab on the back of the remote and it should pair automatically
  • Works with your Roku device: Roku Voice Remote works with all Roku TV models, Roku audio products, and most Roku players*

There is no simultaneous viewing or automatic picture-in-picture implied here. The shortcut takes you back to the previous destination; it does not preserve or replay everything that happened while you were away.

Returning is different from rewinding

If you switch away from a live program and later return, the shortcut should not be treated as a way to replay missed action. In a February 2026 YouTube TV Community discussion, a community answer distinguished last-channel switching from rewinding and said the program generally needs to be recorded in the YouTube TV library to rewind it. That is community guidance, not a formal compatibility or DVR rule for every program and device; see the discussion for its context.

Device support and behavior

The reported steps are for the YouTube TV television app using a remote’s OK/Select button. A later February 2026 community discussion describes holding OK/Enter for last-channel behavior, but it does not establish a full device compatibility list. Exact behavior may vary across TV platforms and remotes. Support on Roku, Apple TV, Google TV/Android TV, Fire TV, smart-TV apps, game consoles, mobile apps, and desktop browsers is not verified by these sources.

The feature was described in 2024 coverage as rolling out to everyone at that time. The later community discussion is evidence that some users still used the interaction in 2026, not proof that it works universally on every setup.

If the long press does nothing

The following are practical troubleshooting suggestions, not official Google instructions:

  • Confirm that you are in the YouTube TV app, not the regular YouTube app.
  • Play one program, switch to another, and try the shortcut while the second is playing.
  • Hold the center OK/Select button rather than tapping it; if the remote has multiple similar controls, try its directional-pad center button.
  • Try switching between two live channels first. The source describes a channel or video, but does not establish identical behavior for every content type.
  • Close and reopen YouTube TV, and check for available app or device updates.
  • If it still fails, the remote may map that button differently on your platform. Use the guide or search to return to the channel.

If the shortcut returns to an unexpected destination, remember that it is described as returning to the immediately previous viewing destination, not navigating a multi-channel history.
