Yes—YouTube TV’s offline-download feature is real now, but the 2021 report behind this headline described an early, not-yet-live feature. Today, eligible DVR recordings can be downloaded to supported phones and tablets by members with the 4K Plus add-on. Not every program is downloadable, and the saved copy is neither permanent nor shareable across multiple devices.
What the 2021 report actually found
On February 16, 2021, 9to5Google reported that YouTube TV for Android version 5.06.2 contained code and interface text pointing to offline downloads. The strings included “Looking for incomplete downloads,” a “Go to downloads” button, download progress, and references to watching downloaded videos. That was credible evidence that Google was preparing the capability—not a formal announcement, a launch date, or proof that subscribers could already use it. The report itself said the feature was not live and that eligibility and restrictions were unclear at the time. Read the original report.
The situation has since changed: YouTube TV now documents offline downloads as a benefit of its 4K Plus add-on. So this is no longer a rumor, though the current feature is more limited than “download any show” might suggest.

With 4K Plus, members can download eligible recordings from their YouTube TV Library to a supported mobile device. This is not a general download option for every live program, on-demand title, or channel. Some networks and programs do not allow downloads; if a recording’s download control is gray or unavailable, that title cannot be saved through the feature.

YouTube TV’s instructions are for mobile devices, including iPhone and iPad. Treat phones and tablets as the intended devices: do not assume downloads work on a smart TV, streaming stick, game console, or desktop browser. YouTube TV and regular YouTube are separate products, too; a YouTube Premium download benefit does not make YouTube TV DVR recordings downloadable.
The 4K Plus add-on is required; the base YouTube TV plan alone does not provide this offline-recording feature. Check YouTube TV’s current plan details before subscribing, since plan benefits and prices can change.

How to download and watch a recording offline
- Open the YouTube TV app on a supported phone or tablet while connected to the internet.
- Go to Library and find the recording.
- Tap its download button. If the button is gray or absent, that program is not available to download.
- Wait for the download to finish before going offline.
- To watch without a connection, open YouTube TV and choose Downloads from the offline page, then select the recording.
You can manage download behavior under Settings → Downloads. YouTube TV recommends a strong Wi-Fi connection and keeping the app open in the foreground while downloading. Turn on Download over Wi-Fi only to avoid using cellular data, or reduce Download quality if you want to use less storage or data. See YouTube TV’s download instructions for current details.
Restrictions to plan around
- One device at a time: A video can be downloaded on one device at a time. To use it on another device, delete the download from the first one.
- Online check-in every 30 days: YouTube TV says to open the app while connected to the internet at least once every 30 days to prevent downloaded videos from being lost.
- Nine-month limit: Downloads expire nine months after the original recording date. They are not permanent copies or ownership of the program.
- Program rights apply: A recording in your Library is not automatically downloadable. Availability varies by program and network.
- Mobile-device focus: The documented feature is for supported mobile devices, not a promise of downloads to televisions or computers.
A completed download should play without Wi-Fi or cellular service. You will, however, need connectivity to start a download and to meet the periodic check-in requirement. YouTube TV support has also said a cellular signal is not required to play a downloaded program; see its offline-playback support discussion.

If a download is missing or will not play
- No download button or a gray button: The program may be blocked by its network or rights holder. Confirm that you have 4K Plus, that the recording is in the Library, and that you are using an updated app on a supported mobile device. Try another recording to see whether the restriction is title-specific.
- Download will not complete: Check the connection, available device storage, and the download settings. A strong Wi-Fi connection and keeping the app open in the foreground are YouTube TV’s documented recommendations.
- Playback fails offline: Confirm that the download completed, that the recording has not expired, and that you opened the app online within the last 30 days. Also check that the download is on this device and that the account still has 4K Plus.
- The app says it is downloaded on another device: The one-device restriction may be the cause. Delete the copy from the original device if possible. Some users have reported stale device assignments after changing or resetting devices, but such reports are anecdotal rather than evidence of a universal problem; contact YouTube TV support if the old copy cannot be removed.
- A recording disappeared: Check its age and your last online check-in. A recording may also become unavailable because of its retention period or content rights. A download should not be treated as an archive.
Is 4K Plus worth it just for offline viewing?

Offline viewing is a practical travel benefit for some subscribers, not a replacement for owning video files or a guarantee that every program will be available without a connection. The original Android-code report was a genuine early clue; the useful question now is whether 4K Plus’s device, rights, and expiration limits suit the way you watch.
