What caused the YouTube TV–Disney blackout?
Disney and YouTube TV did not renew their distribution agreement by October 30, 2025. Once the contract expired, Disney-owned programming was removed from YouTube TV while the companies negotiated. The dispute affected a major live-TV service during college-football season, making ESPN’s absence particularly disruptive.
The affected lineup included ABC, ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, FX, Disney Channel, National Geographic and other Disney-owned networks. Local ABC availability could vary by market, so the precise impact depended on a subscriber’s ZIP code and station.

YouTube TV’s public account said it wanted the channels customers most directly requested—especially “ABC and the ESPN networks”—restored while talks continued. It argued that accepting Disney’s demands could raise prices or otherwise disadvantage subscribers. YouTube TV’s public criticism and the reported negotiating issues are summarized by Android Headlines.
What did YouTube TV accuse Disney of demanding?
YouTube TV portrayed Disney as refusing to restore service during negotiations and said viewers should not be used as leverage in a carriage dispute. That is YouTube TV’s position, not an independently established description of every term Disney proposed.
Contemporaneous reporting linked the negotiations to how Disney’s newer direct-to-consumer products—particularly ESPN Unlimited and Disney+—would fit alongside traditional channel distribution. The complete commercial terms were not publicly disclosed in the sources available, and neither company published the final contract.

Why ESPN Unlimited mattered
Disney’s fiscal 2025 annual report distinguishes ESPN Unlimited from ESPN Select, the product formerly known as ESPN+. ESPN Unlimited is described as a direct-to-consumer service that includes access to ESPN-branded television channels, while ESPN Select offers a different collection of sports programming. That distinction matters: a direct ESPN subscription is not automatically identical to the ESPN channels delivered through a live-TV bundle, and neither product should be assumed to include a subscriber’s local ABC station. Reporting that Disney wanted to connect traditional distribution with these products should therefore be treated as a description of the negotiation, not proof that every proposed bundle would have included every ESPN Unlimited feature.
What viewers lost during the dispute
- Local ABC: Network programming and local news, where the subscriber’s market was affected.
- ESPN networks: ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU and SEC Network programming, including live games and studio shows.
- Other Disney-owned channels: Entertainment, children’s and news programming from networks such as FX, Disney Channel and National Geographic.
- DVR access: Live access and scheduled recordings involving removed channels were affected during the blackout.
YouTube TV said that after restoration, recordings, preferences and recommendations would remain in subscribers’ libraries. The official resolution notice is available in the YouTube TV Community announcement.

The interval from October 30 to November 14 was roughly two weeks. “Roughly” is important because individual channels, especially local ABC stations, could return on different schedules.
How the dispute ended
The November 14 agreement restored Disney channels to YouTube TV. YouTube TV offered eligible subscribers a one-time $20 credit. Customers billed directly through YouTube TV could claim it; subscribers billed through Google Play or another third party were to receive the credit automatically, according to the official notice.
The credit was not necessarily a full refund for every customer, and its December 9, 2025 claim deadline has passed. Reports of larger “come-back” offers should not be confused with this officially documented credit.

What is not established
Disney’s fiscal 2025 earnings materials discuss the dispute, but the available sources do not establish an independently audited daily revenue loss caused solely by the blackout. Estimates reported elsewhere should be treated as estimates. Audience movement toward Fox during college football was also reported, but ratings are influenced by matchups, schedules, team performance and normal variation. Because the 2025 blackout ended, an outdated headline alone is not a reason to cancel YouTube TV. Check the current lineup and local-station availability for your ZIP code before changing service. If a future dispute occurs, match the replacement to the exact channel or event you need.
If you need local ABC
- Check whether your local ABC affiliate is included in the live-TV service you are considering.
- An over-the-air antenna may provide free ABC where reception is practical. Signal quality depends on geography, building materials, antenna placement and distance from broadcast towers. The FCC’s consumer guide explains the basics: antennas and digital television.
If you need ESPN’s linear channels
Compare live-TV packages by the specific network—ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network or another outlet—and by the event you watch. A direct ESPN product should not be assumed to replace local ABC, every linear ESPN feed or every game available in a live-TV bundle.

If you need ESPN programming without a full bundle
Disney’s direct ESPN offerings may suit viewers focused on ESPN content, but availability and rights differ by product. Review the current lineup at ESPN Watch rather than treating “ESPN subscription” as a universal substitute.

Why carriage disputes keep happening
Live-TV distributors negotiate for reasonable wholesale costs and flexibility in how channels are packaged. Programmers seek carriage fees, broad reach and leverage for their own streaming services. When contracts expire, either side can calculate that a temporary blackout creates more pressure than an immediate compromise. Subscribers bear the short-term cost, while the eventual agreement can change pricing, packaging or digital access even after channels return.
Bottom line
YouTube TV’s “ABC and ESPN blackout” was a resolved dispute from late 2025. The agreement expired on October 30, the channels were unavailable for about two weeks, and a new deal was announced on November 14. YouTube TV offered eligible subscribers a one-time $20 credit with a December 9, 2025 deadline. ESPN’s direct-to-consumer products are not automatically equivalent to a full live-TV bundle, so viewers should compare the precise channel or event they need rather than rely on the old blackout headline.
