Not as a confirmed 2026 fact—and not if “traditional cable subscribers” means all cable companies combined. A 2024 MoffettNathanson forecast projected that YouTube TV could reach 12.4 million subscribers by the end of 2026, overtaking individual operators such as Comcast or Charter. A later Omdia forecast put the likely milestone in 2027. Neither forecast means YouTube TV would exceed the traditional cable industry’s combined subscriber base.
The 2026 claim was a forecast, not a reported milestone
The claim traces to a MoffettNathanson estimate reported in 2024. It projected YouTube TV would add roughly 1.5 million subscribers a year and reach about 12.4 million by the end of 2026, while Comcast and Charter continued losing video customers. The forecast described a possible change in the ranking of individual U.S. pay-TV providers; it was not a subscriber target announced by Google or YouTube. Light Reading’s report on the forecast and an FCC report citing the estimate both identify it as outside research.
That distinction matters because a forecast is not proof that the crossover happened. As of August 18, 2026, the available sources do not establish a definitive, company-reported YouTube TV subscriber count showing that it had passed Comcast or Charter.

- All cable companies combined: YouTube TV versus the collective subscriber base of major cable operators. The available baseline shows that this is a much larger group.
- The largest single pay-TV provider: YouTube TV ranked against individual cable, satellite, telco-TV and internet-delivered live-TV services.
- The whole traditional pay-TV market: Cable plus satellite and telco television providers. That is broader than cable alone.
YouTube TV is a virtual multichannel video programming distributor, or vMVPD: it delivers a live-TV bundle over the internet. It competes in the same broad pay-TV category as cable, satellite and telco television, but it is not a cable operator. It is also distinct from YouTube’s general video platform and from subscription video-on-demand services such as Netflix.
How the numbers compare
Leichtman Research Group estimated that YouTube TV had 7.9 million subscribers at the end of 2023, after adding about 1.9 million that year. Its figures are estimates, not an audited subscriber disclosure by Google. The same research gives a useful sense of scale:

The cable total includes the major companies tracked by Leichtman, not necessarily every provider. Even with that qualification, the comparison makes the wording problem clear: YouTube TV was far below the combined major-cable total, while a forecast of 12.4 million could put it ahead of one large operator as that operator shrank. The later forecast moved the expected crossover to 2027
Omdia’s forecast, published in December 2025, placed YouTube TV at about 9.3 million subscribers at the end of 2025, behind Charter and Comcast. For 2027, it projected YouTube TV at approximately 10.4 million, compared with 10.0 million for Charter and 9.2 million for Comcast. On that estimate, YouTube TV would become the largest U.S. pay-TV operator by subscriber count in 2027—not 2026. These are still forecasts, not confirmed results. Omdia’s announcement explains its projection.

The estimates do not necessarily contradict one another in a simple way. They were made at different times and may use different definitions and assumptions about subscribers, household sharing, additions and churn, or the treatment of virtual providers. Without comparable methodology and an actual subscriber series, the newer forecast is best read as an update to the expected timing, not as proof that the earlier forecast succeeded or failed.
Why a single-provider crossover is plausible
YouTube TV combines familiar linear channels with internet delivery. Its product features include cloud DVR, multiple household profiles and viewing on televisions, phones, tablets and computers. YouTube has also made sports a prominent part of the offering, with major networks and optional products such as NFL Sunday Ticket. Those features can help it attract and retain households that still want live channels but no longer want a conventional cable-TV package.

That growth can occur even while the overall pay-TV market contracts. A MoffettNathanson-based estimate reported that U.S. pay TV had about 62.23 million subscribers at the end of Q1 2026: 40.90 million with traditional providers (cable, telco and satellite) and 21.33 million with vMVPDs. The report estimated a loss of about 2.03 million subscribers in that quarter. Those are market-wide estimates, not a YouTube TV count. Light Reading’s Q1 2026 report provides the figures.

Why the crossover is hard to verify
Alphabet does not consistently publish YouTube TV as a separate subscriber line in its public earnings materials. That leaves analysts to estimate the service’s subscriber base, and makes those estimates different from a regular company-reported figure. Counting can also be complicated by shared accounts, trials, bundled billing, seasonal sports subscriptions and whether an add-on is included in a base-service tally.

Product and audience measures are not substitutes for subscriber counts. For example, Nielsen reported that the broader YouTube platform accounted for 12.5% of U.S. TV viewing in May 2025 and 13.4% in July 2025. Those figures include viewing on YouTube beyond the paid live-TV service; they do not show YouTube TV’s share of subscribers or prove that it passed a cable company. A subscriber ranking does not tell you which service is best for your home—or whether it will cost less than cable. YouTube’s official February 2026 pricing announcement listed its main plan at $82.99 a month for 100-plus networks. It also introduced lower-priced genre plans, including Sports at $64.99, Sports + News at $71.99, Entertainment at $54.99, and News + Entertainment + Family at $69.99 per month. The announcement listed introductory prices for some plans, with limited durations; those promotions are not permanent rates. Prices and availability can change, so check YouTube’s plan announcement and the official YouTube TV site before subscribing.
The lower-priced packages show a strategy of offering different bundles, not simply undercutting cable across the board. A fair household comparison should include:

- Broadband: YouTube TV requires internet service. If you would keep that connection anyway, it may not be an incremental cost; if not, include the broadband bill.
- Channels by location: Local broadcast and regional sports availability can vary by market. Check the channels you actually need by ZIP code.
- Sports and add-ons: NFL Sunday Ticket and other optional services cost extra. A Sunday Ticket subscription should not be treated as the same thing as a base YouTube TV subscriber.
- Full monthly bill: Compare post-promotion prices, taxes, equipment or DVR fees, provider-specific charges and add-ons—not just a headline price.
- Viewing needs: Consider how many people watch at once, supported devices, DVR features and whether a broad live bundle is worth paying for when you mainly watch on-demand programs.
- Flexibility: Internet TV can avoid some traditional box and contract constraints, but still depends on a reliable connection and recurring subscription.
YouTube TV’s official product information describes features such as unlimited DVR and up to six household members. Sports packages and features can change, so confirm what is included in the plan you are considering rather than assuming every sports add-on or capability comes with the base price.
So, did YouTube TV surpass cable by 2026?
The careful answer has three parts. It was plausible that YouTube TV could overtake an individual cable company as the largest single U.S. pay-TV provider. It was not forecast to surpass all traditional cable subscribers combined; the 2023 estimate for major cable companies together was much larger. And the crossover was not confirmed as of August 18, 2026 by the available company-reported subscriber data. The original 2026 figure was a forecast; Omdia’s later forecast placed the expected milestone in 2027.
