YouTube TV and Disney reached a multiyear distribution agreement on November 14, 2025, ending a blackout that began October 30. Disney said its networks and stations, including ESPN and ABC, had begun returning to YouTube TV. The deal restored access, but its financial terms were not disclosed—and the one-time $20 credit offered to eligible subscribers had a December 9, 2025 claim deadline that has passed.
What happened, and when?
The previous distribution agreement expired on October 30, 2025. Disney-owned programming then became unavailable on YouTube TV while the companies negotiated a renewal. They announced a multiyear agreement on November 14, and Disney said its networks and stations had begun returning to subscribers. The disruption lasted roughly two weeks; descriptions such as “15 days” depend on how the start and restoration dates are counted. Disney’s announcement described the new agreement as multiyear, without disclosing its exact term.
- October 30, 2025: The previous agreement expired and Disney programming disappeared from YouTube TV.
- November 14, 2025: The companies announced a new agreement and restoration began.
- December 9, 2025: The claim deadline for the announced subscriber credit.
Which channels were affected?
The dispute concerned Disney-owned linear channels and stations carried through YouTube TV—not access to separate Disney+ or Hulu subscriptions. Disney said its “full suite” of networks and stations, including ESPN and ABC, was returning. The affected portfolio included major services such as ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPNEWS, SEC Network, ACC Network, ABC, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Junior, Freeform, FX, FXX, FXM, and National Geographic. Exact channel availability can depend on the YouTube TV package and local market; Disney’s broad restoration statement is not a guarantee that every local ABC affiliate is available everywhere.
Why did the blackout happen?
This was a carriage-renewal dispute: Disney licenses its channels to distributors, and YouTube TV pays for the right to carry them in its live-TV package. The companies publicly offered competing explanations rather than a shared account of who was responsible.

YouTube TV’s position
YouTube TV said Disney sought “costly economic terms” that could raise subscribers’ costs. It also argued that Disney wanted terms advantageous to its own live-TV products. YouTube TV’s public explanation presented the dispute as a matter of preserving subscriber value and flexibility.
Disney’s position
Disney emphasized the value of its programming, especially sports, and said YouTube TV had not reached a new agreement. Those statements reflect each company’s position, not independent proof that one side alone caused the blackout.

Why did the interruption matter?
Disney controls programming that many live-TV subscribers cannot easily replace within the same package. ESPN carries major sports coverage; ABC is a broadcast source for sports and news; and Disney’s other channels serve entertainment and children’s programming. The timing overlapped with college football and professional sports, making the loss especially significant for households that rely on ESPN or ABC. Not every subscriber watches those channels, so the practical impact varied by household.
Axios reported that YouTube TV had more than 8 million subscribers during the dispute. Subscriber estimates reported at the time varied, so that figure is a contemporary estimate, not a single audited count.

What the new agreement confirmed—and what it did not
Confirmed
- The companies agreed to a multiyear distribution deal.
- Disney’s networks and stations began returning, including ESPN and ABC.
- The parties described flexibility and customer choice as goals.
Not publicly disclosed or guaranteed at launch
- The exact contract length, wholesale rates, channel-by-channel economics, and minimum guarantees.
- Whether the agreement would cause a specific YouTube TV price change. YouTube TV said it sought to preserve value, but that does not establish the deal’s financial effect.
- Precise launch dates or universal availability for reported future integrations, such as selected ESPN direct-to-consumer programming, Disney+ and Hulu bundles, or genre-based packages. These were discussed as strategic directions or reported framework items, not proof that every feature was immediately available to every subscriber.
Carriage fees can contribute to the cost of live TV, but a distributor may absorb costs, change prices, adjust packages, or negotiate different tiers. The public announcement does not establish which outcome followed from this agreement.
What subscribers should check now
If a channel still appears unavailable
- Open YouTube TV and check the live guide for ESPN, ABC, or the affected channel.
- Restart the app or refresh the browser or device, then check the listing again.
- Install any available app, browser, or device updates and confirm you are signed into the correct YouTube TV account.
- Check whether your local ABC affiliate is carried in your market; national restoration does not ensure local affiliate availability everywhere.
- If a channel remains missing, contact YouTube TV support and provide the channel, device, and market details.
If a recording is missing
Check the Library, but do not assume that recordings from the blackout period, expired programs, or interrupted schedules were restored automatically. Whether a particular program remains available may depend on its listing, rights, and recording window. The companies’ restoration announcement did not settle every subscriber’s DVR case, so contact YouTube TV support for an account-specific answer.

If you expected a credit
YouTube TV announced a one-time $20 credit for eligible subscribers and said it had to be claimed by December 9, 2025. The claim period is over. It was a credit, not necessarily a cash refund, and the notice did not mean every affected subscriber received it automatically. Check past billing records for your account’s outcome; eligibility could differ for people who canceled, paused, or changed billing during the dispute. YouTube TV’s subscriber notice contains the original terms.

The restored channels answer the immediate question of access, not whether the service still fits your household. Consider what you watch, what is available locally, and whether the service’s price and features remain worthwhile.

- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
- Sports-focused household: YouTube TV may suit viewers who want ESPN in a broader live-TV package. If you mainly want ESPN, a direct ESPN subscription may be a more focused option, but it is not a full live-TV replacement.
- Disney entertainment household: Disney+ and Hulu bundles provide streaming libraries, not the same complete live-channel lineup as YouTube TV.
- Local-news household: Check the local ABC affiliate and other local stations for your market before changing services.
- Price-sensitive household: Compare the current full monthly cost, including any add-ons and the end of promotional periods, against the channels and DVR features you actually use.
- Dispute-averse household: A multiyear agreement lowers the immediate risk of another Disney blackout, but it does not remove the possibility of future carriage negotiations with Disney or other programmers.
Alternatives if you want something narrower
Prices below are U.S. prices displayed on official pages in August 2026; services and promotions can change. They are not directly comparable to a full live-TV package, and local-channel availability varies.
| Option | Best suited to | Displayed price | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | Viewers seeking a broad live-TV package that includes Disney channels where carried. | Not stated on the official signup page in the available price information; check checkout for the current plan and market. | Broader than an ESPN-only or entertainment-only need; local lineups and current price require checking. |
| ESPN Unlimited | Sports-first viewers who primarily want ESPN programming. | $29.99 per month for ESPN Unlimited on the official page in August 2026. | Not the same as a full live-TV package with local stations, a broad channel grid, and YouTube TV’s DVR experience. |
| Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN Unlimited | Households wanting Disney entertainment services alongside ESPN. | $35.99 per month for the listed bundle; $44.99 per month for its premium version, as displayed in August 2026. | Does not automatically reproduce YouTube TV’s local channels or live-TV package. Disney says services may require separate apps, and ESPN includes ads even in the premium bundle. |
| Disney+ and Hulu | Viewers who want the two entertainment services but not a full live-TV replacement. | $12.99 per month with ads or $19.99 per month for Premium at regular prices shown; the page also displayed six-month promotional rates of $11.99 and $17.99, respectively. | Streaming libraries are not a substitute for a full live channel lineup. |
| Hulu + Live TV | Viewers seeking live TV alongside Disney+, Hulu, and ESPN content. | $89.99 and $99.99 per month for the plans displayed on Disney’s bundle page in August 2026; check checkout for exact inclusions and current terms. | Higher cost than an entertainment-only bundle, and the live-TV and streaming experiences may be split across features. |
Before switching, compare the specific plan’s ESPN and local-station availability in your ZIP code, DVR features, regional or league restrictions, and total cost after introductory pricing ends. ESPN Unlimited is a separate direct-to-consumer service; subscribing to it is not automatically the same as receiving ESPN through YouTube TV.
Has this happened before?
Yes. Disney programming was briefly unavailable on YouTube TV in December 2021 before the companies reached an agreement. YouTube TV’s 2021 update said the disruption had lasted less than two days. That earlier resolution does not predict how long a future negotiation would take.
