To send a vMix production to YouTube, copy the stream URL and stream key for the intended stream from YouTube Studio, enter them in vMix’s Streaming Settings, then start the stream and check its health in YouTube’s Live Control Room. For an always-on channel, the key setup is only the beginning: your computer, vMix, source media, power and internet connection must keep working for the broadcast to continue. This guide covers both a continuously produced vMix program and the different case of looping prerecorded videos.
Before setting up vMix, confirm YouTube can accept a live stream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. If this is the first time you enable live streaming, activation can take up to 24 hours, so do this before a planned launch rather than immediately before going live. See YouTube Help’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Decide what you mean by “always-on.” A vMix production is a live program assembled in vMix; keeping it running means keeping the production system and its inputs operating. A prerecorded loop is video played repeatedly as a live stream. It can be sent through vMix, but it does not require the same kind of live production, and YouTube identifies a cloud option for prerecorded 24/7 streams in its encoder guidance.
Get the YouTube stream URL and key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or select the scheduled stream you intend vMix to feed.
- Open the stream’s Stream tab. Copy its server URL and stream key. These values belong to that stream; use the values for the stream you intend to start, not a key copied from an unrelated event. YouTube’s steps are in Set up your encoder.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password: anyone with the key may be able to send video to your channel. Do not show it in screenshots, tutorials, logs or public chat. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube and replace the old value in vMix. Details are in Manage live stream settings.
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A copied key should be protected accordingly.

Enter the stream details in vMix
In vMix, click the cog beside the Stream button to open Streaming Settings. The vMix version 29 guide documents an integrated YouTube destination as well as a manual Custom RTMP Server route. Exact options can vary by vMix version and setup; use the route that matches the controls available in your installation.
Option A: Use vMix’s YouTube Live destination
- In Streaming Settings, choose YouTube Live as the destination.
- Follow the destination’s prompts to connect or select the channel and stream. vMix documents both creating a stream from within vMix and selecting an existing scheduled event.
- Review which YouTube event vMix is targeting before starting. This route can reduce manual copying, while the Studio-created stream route gives you control over the scheduled stream in Live Control Room.
Option B: Enter the URL and key with Custom RTMP
- In Streaming Settings, select Custom RTMP Server.
- Paste YouTube’s server URL into the URL field.
- Paste the stream key into the Stream Name or Key field.
- Choose a suitable output quality and confirm the encoding settings described below.
Use the matching URL and key together. Do not substitute a watch-page URL for the server URL. The vMix documentation covers these destination paths in its version 29 streaming guide and YouTube Live setup instructions.

Choose an encoder profile YouTube and your connection can sustain
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; it says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the encrypted transport recommendation. YouTube’s supported codecs include H.264, HEVC and AV1 for video, with AAC or MP3 audio, but availability in vMix depends on the installed version and the computer’s hardware and software configuration. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not a guarantee that every option appears in every vMix setup. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings and check the encoder controls available to you.
| Example H.264 output | YouTube-listed minimum bitrate | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
These examples are from YouTube’s H.264 recommendations; other resolutions, frame rates and codecs have their own guidance. Select the row matching your intended output and codec rather than treating the examples as universal settings. A profile that exceeds your sustained upload capacity can cause buffering or interruptions even if it starts successfully.

Start the stream and verify the feed
- Confirm that the vMix program preview contains the intended video and audio.
- Start streaming with vMix’s Stream button.
- Watch the Live Control Room preview to confirm that YouTube is receiving the expected picture and sound. Check the stream-health indicators and, where relevant, make sure the intended watch page is accessible.
- Listen and watch for problems at the YouTube end, not only in vMix’s local preview. Keep monitoring during operation, especially after changing an input, network path or encoding profile.
YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting and reliability guidance recommends testing the setup, monitoring stream health and checking audio and video quality. It also recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. For example, if the selected video bitrate is 10 Mbps, plan for at least 12 Mbps of sustained upload capacity before accounting for other traffic or a backup bitrate. A wired Ethernet connection can be a sensible choice for a compatible PC, but it does not guarantee continuity.
What “always-on” requires from a vMix setup
Keep the whole production chain running
A vMix stream can stop if the PC loses power, the operating system or vMix fails, an input or media source becomes unavailable, or the network connection is disrupted. YouTube’s guidance stresses testing and monitoring; the reviewed vMix and YouTube instructions do not establish an unattended restart or failover guarantee for a vMix production. For an unattended channel, arrange a way to notice an interruption and document how an operator will restore the feed.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single broadcast running longer than 12 hours to produce a complete automatic archive. If retaining the full program matters, plan separate recordings or shorter sessions; the cited help does not establish a complete archive for a continuous stream beyond that threshold. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.
Distinguish a live vMix program from a prerecorded loop
If you are producing a live program—with a live operator, changing sources or live contributions—vMix is the production system being kept online. If the channel’s purpose is to repeat uploaded recordings, that is a prerecorded-video workflow instead. YouTube’s encoder list names Gyre as a cloud-based option for 24/7 prerecorded YouTube streams and says it does not need a dedicated PC or camera. That mention does not establish that Gyre is a drop-in vMix production workflow or provide an independent uptime or price comparison. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Common problems and fixes
| Symptom | What to check | Practical fix |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube does not accept the stream | Channel eligibility, whether live streaming has been enabled, and whether activation is still pending | Verify the channel and check for restrictions; allow up to 24 hours for first-time enablement. |
| vMix cannot connect to the RTMP destination | That the server URL and key are both copied from the intended YouTube stream and placed in the matching vMix fields | Re-copy both values from that stream’s Stream tab. If the key was exposed or reset, update vMix with the replacement. |
| Feed starts but is unstable or loses quality | Sustained upload capacity, competing network traffic, selected bitrate, stream health and whether the setup was tested | Choose an output your connection can sustain, leave YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom and monitor health while testing. |
| YouTube preview has missing or poor audio/video | The actual incoming feed in Live Control Room, not just the local vMix preview | Check the vMix output and encoding profile, then test again while monitoring the incoming feed and stream health. |
| Long broadcast is missing from automatic archives | Whether the stream exceeded YouTube’s under-12-hour automatic-archive threshold | Use separate recordings or shorter sessions if a complete archive is required. |
| vMix ends but the YouTube event also ends | Whether the integrated YouTube Live workflow was used | vMix documents that ending its stream also ends the YouTube stream for the “YouTube Live Stream Now” destination; choose the scheduling and control workflow deliberately. |
Copyright and channel-policy checks for a continuous stream
Before leaving a channel running, make sure you have the necessary rights to every recording, music track, image and other material in the loop. A stream key only authorizes the encoder connection; it does not grant permission to broadcast content. Review YouTube’s current live-streaming rules and the rights for each item in your playlist. Reusing recordings also does not guarantee that the channel will qualify for monetization; eligibility and monetization decisions are separate from the technical setup.
Use this copyright safety checklist to review content rights. For planning upload time, use the upload-time calculator; to compare ongoing cloud and PC costs, use the cloud vs PC cost calculator.
