Then play the prepared files through an encoder that continuously sends a feed to YouTube using your stream URL and key. Converting FLV to MP4 alone does not create or sustain a live broadcast.
FLV conversion and continuous streaming are separate jobs
FLV is a container, not a guarantee about the video or audio codec inside it. Two files ending in .flv may need different treatment. Changing the container can be enough when the existing streams are compatible; otherwise, the streams need to be decoded and encoded again.
FFmpeg documents both conversion by re-encoding and stream-copy workflows. The right choice depends on the codecs in your particular file and the target workflow, not just its extension. FFmpeg command-line documentation
After preparing the media, a separate encoder must play it and transmit an ongoing feed to YouTube. YouTube describes the encoder as software that converts video into a digital format for streaming. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder

Inspect each FLV before choosing a conversion
Identify the streams and note their properties before selecting stream copy or re-encoding. The actual codecs in your files are unknown until you inspect them, so there is no universal FLV-to-MP4 command that is safe to recommend for every input.
- Video codec, resolution, frame rate, and whether the file contains more than one video stream.
- Audio codec and whether there are multiple audio tracks.
- Any additional tracks, such as subtitles, that you need to retain or handle separately.
FFprobe, distributed with FFmpeg, can report container and stream details. For example, run ffprobe -hide_banner -i input.flv and read the stream lines in its output. Replace input.flv with your file’s actual name; this command inspects the media and does not convert it.
Choose between remuxing and re-encoding

FFmpeg’s documentation distinguishes stream copy from conversion by re-encoding. Choose only after checking the input and the required output; neither the FLV extension nor an MP4 output name proves that the resulting streams are appropriate for YouTube ingestion. FFmpeg command-line documentation

Set the YouTube encoder profile
YouTube’s published standard encoder guidance for RTMP/RTMPS lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Match the bitrate to the selected codec, resolution, and frame rate using YouTube’s current table rather than treating one bitrate as universal. - Use the row in YouTube’s bitrate guidance for your chosen video codec, resolution, and frame rate.
- Configure CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Use an audio codec accepted for the selected RTMP/RTMPS workflow.
- Allow at least 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the total streaming bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Test the actual upload connection rather than relying on its advertised download speed. YouTube encoder settings YouTube live streaming tips
YouTube’s standard settings page recommends RTMPS. HDR workflows have separate HLS requirements, so do not apply the standard SDR/RTMP profile to HDR without checking the relevant guidance. YouTube encoder settings

Connect an encoder and start the live stream
- Check eligibility. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days; its current guidance sets the minimum age for livestreaming at 16. Confirm the channel meets the applicable requirements before scheduling a continuous broadcast. YouTube live-streaming eligibility
- Create or select a stream in YouTube Live Control Room. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for the stream into your encoder’s streaming destination fields. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a command, screenshot, or public log.
- Configure playback. Set the encoder to play the prepared video or playlist continuously, using the profile chosen above. A converted file is only a source; the encoder must keep sending the live feed.
- Preview before going live. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health, and listen for clean, continuous audio. Start the broadcast through Live Control Room when the feed is ready. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Test the long-running workflow. Check representative motion and audio, transitions between source files, encoder restarts, and recovery after network interruptions. Plan continuity, bandwidth, and archives
Keep the feed and connection under observation
A 24/7 broadcast depends on a playback and encoder process that continues running, as well as a stable upload connection. YouTube recommends 20% upload headroom. Monitor stream health and audio/video quality rather than assuming that a successful initial connection will remain healthy indefinitely. YouTube live streaming tips
Do not assume YouTube will archive an entire 24/7 stream
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A stream that runs longer than 12 hours is outside that stated automatic-archive window, so arrange a separate recording or archive workflow if you need a complete copy. Check rights and channel policies
Having a video file does not establish that you have the rights to broadcast its contents. Confirm that you have permission for the footage, music, and other material in every source video, and review YouTube’s copyright and monetization policies before putting a playlist on continuous repeat. Repeated or reused material can also raise policy questions separate from technical streaming compatibility. Use YouTube’s policy guidance for the specific content and channel rather than treating conversion as permission to stream.

- The file will not play after changing its extension: Renaming does not convert a container or codec. Inspect the streams, then remux compatible streams or re-encode incompatible ones.
- The encoder rejects the media: Check the actual video and audio codecs and compare them with YouTube’s accepted RTMP/RTMPS formats. If they do not match the intended profile, re-encode as needed.
- YouTube does not receive a feed: Confirm the server URL and stream key were copied into the correct encoder fields, that the encoder is running, and that the channel is eligible to livestream. Regenerate or replace an exposed key.
- The stream health is poor or the feed drops: Check upload bitrate and stability, apply the recommended bandwidth headroom, and verify encoder settings against YouTube’s profile guidance. Preview and monitor the stream after reconnecting.
- Audio is missing, distorted, or out of sync: Inspect the source’s audio tracks and codec, check which track the encoder is using, and test playback and synchronization in Live Control Room before relying on the playlist.
- The archive stops before the broadcast ends: YouTube’s automatic archive guidance covers streams under 12 hours, not a longer 24/7 session. Use a separate recording or archive workflow if you need the complete stream.
