Check YouTube Studio’s “When your viewers are on YouTube” report, use it to choose a time you can sustain, then compare similar livestreams to see how that schedule serves your audience.
Find when your viewers are online
In YouTube Studio, go to Analytics → Audience → “When your viewers are on YouTube.” YouTube says this report shows when your viewers were online across YouTube during the past 28 days and can help you plan your next livestream. YouTube Help: Understand your YouTube audience.
Use the activity pattern as a starting point, not a promise that a particular livestream will attract more viewers. It reflects audience activity across YouTube; it does not guarantee attendance at your stream. The reviewed YouTube guidance gives no universal best hour or day, industry-wide daypart ranking, or numerical lift from choosing a particular time.
Choose a time you can keep
Look for a feasible recurring slot that overlaps with audience activity and fits your preparation and production routine. If the report points to a time you cannot reliably make, choose a practical alternative rather than setting a schedule you are likely to abandon.

- Decide how often you can stream and how much preparation each episode requires.
- Account for the format and whether you plan to leave an archive viewers can watch later.

- Announce the recurring time so viewers know when to expect the next stream.
Test the schedule fairly
Try the selected slot over several comparable livestreams. To learn whether timing may be helping, keep the format and topic as similar as practical and avoid changing promotion or production substantially at the same time. Other factors—including topic, format, promotion, seasonality, and execution—can affect results, so a change in performance cannot automatically be credited to the time slot.
Review the results in YouTube Studio’s live analytics. Relevant measures include average and peak concurrent viewers, watch time, average view duration, audience retention, and traffic sources. Compare streams with similar formats and judge the numbers against your goal: for example, reaching more live viewers, encouraging longer viewing, or attracting traffic from a particular source. If two possible times perform similarly, favor the one you can sustain and communicate consistently.
Keep a simple comparison log
Record each stream’s scheduled time, format, topic, promotion, and the metrics that matter to your goal. After several comparable streams, look for a pattern rather than treating one unusually strong or weak broadcast as decisive. A simple log can include:
- Date and start time
- Format and topic
- How and when the stream was promoted
- Average and peak concurrent viewers
- Watch time, average view duration, and retention
- Traffic sources
For a documentary channel, make the schedule fit the program
Documentary streams can differ in length, subject, and viewing purpose. A premiere-style discussion, a long-form screening, and a recurring themed program may draw different viewing habits. Treat each as its own format when comparing results, and make the start time and schedule clear to viewers. A consistent slot is useful only if it suits both the program and the people you want to reach.
