If a YouTube stream key will not save or update, first check that you have the correct stream selected and the right channel role. Then separate a Live Control Room problem from an encoder problem: YouTube’s help pages do not identify a browser-specific cause or confirmed browser fix for a key that fails to persist. Browser refreshes and cache checks are reasonable isolation steps, not a guaranteed repair.
What the stream key does—and what “not saving” can mean
A YouTube stream key is a credential an encoder uses to send a live feed to YouTube. YouTube Help describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is managed in Live Control Room, then entered in the encoder when using a key-based setup. (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings; YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.)
Pin down the failed action before changing settings. The problem could be selecting or saving a key in Studio, copying it, or having an encoder accept it. Those are separate points in the setup; a key visible in Studio does not by itself prove that the encoder is using that same key or that its feed reaches YouTube.
Check the selected stream and your channel permissions
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live, choose the intended stream, and open Stream. Check the Stream key controls for that stream. Use the available copy or selection controls rather than assuming a previously copied value is current. YouTube allows custom stream keys for reuse. (YouTube Help: Manage live stream settings.)
- If you need to reset the key, confirm your channel role. YouTube says only a channel owner or manager can reset a stream key; editors and viewers do not have that permission. If Reset is unavailable, ask an owner or manager to reset it.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room, copy the newly generated key, and replace the old one in every encoder that uses it. Resetting rotates the credential: an encoder still configured with the former key will need updating.
Update and test the encoder separately
- In the encoder, open the settings for the matching YouTube destination and replace its stream key with the current key copied from Live Control Room. YouTube recommends retrieving the key there and pasting it into the third-party encoder when the encoder will not start. (YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.)
- Check whether the software uses a stream key at all. If it signs in directly to YouTube instead, YouTube advises contacting that software’s support team for trouble with its integration.
- Start sending the feed from the encoder and wait for a preview in Live Control Room. Review stream health before clicking Go live. The preview is an end-to-end checkpoint: it shows that YouTube is receiving a feed, not merely that a key is visible in Studio. Browser checks to isolate a Studio problem
Try these low-risk checks if the failure occurs inside YouTube Studio. They may help identify a transient browser-session issue, but YouTube’s cited guidance does not document them as a specific cure for stream-key save failures.

- Reload Studio, close and reopen the page, and retry the same action with the intended stream selected.
- Update and restart the browser, close surplus tabs, or try Chrome.
- Restart the device. If the symptom persists, try clearing the browser cache and cookies; this is a general YouTube browser/video-error recommendation, not a confirmed stream-key persistence fix. (YouTube Help: Fix videos that won’t play.)
Change one condition at a time and note whether the same operation fails. If a different browser works, that is useful diagnostic evidence, but it does not establish why the original session failed.
Identify which layer is failing

Common symptoms and what to do
- Reset is missing or unavailable: ask a channel owner or manager to perform the reset; editors and viewers cannot reset keys.
- The encoder rejects the key or will not start: retrieve the current key from the selected stream in Live Control Room and update the matching encoder destination. If the encoder uses direct account sign-in rather than a key, contact its support team.
- The key appears in Studio but no preview arrives: check that the encoder is sending to the intended YouTube destination with the current key, then wait for the Live Control Room preview and review stream health before going live.
- The Studio action still fails after browser checks: record the exact operation that fails, browser name and version, and your channel role. Use YouTube Help for a Studio-side key-management failure; contact the encoder provider for a sign-in or integration failure.
Confirm live-stream eligibility if setup works but streaming does not
Saving or selecting a key is not the same as being eligible to live stream. YouTube lists channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days among its live-streaming requirements. Check eligibility separately if the key workflow succeeds but you still cannot start a stream. (YouTube Help: Get started with live streaming.)
