No single movie is the most accurate account of the entire war. This ranking weighs filmmaking, historical focus, point of view and the care with which each film frames race and the conflict. Several are dramas rather than documentaries, so treat them as interpretations—not stand-alone history lessons.
How this ranking works
This is an editorial ranking, not an objective score or an audience poll. In a February 2026 survey, historian Chris Mackowski examined 14 existing lists, retaining films that appeared on at least three and removing each qualifying film’s highest and lowest placement to reduce outlier effects. Glory and Gettysburg appeared on all 14 lists; Gone with the Wind on 13; Lincoln on 12; and Cold Mountain and Ride with the Devil on 11. Those appearances establish recurring recognition, not historical accuracy or a definitive order. The survey is explicitly Part 1 of 2, so this list makes its own choices rather than presenting itself as the survey’s complete ranking. Read Mackowski’s February 2026 survey.
The order below considers what each movie offers: dramatic craft, whose experience it follows, whether the war is its main subject, and how responsibly it handles slavery, race, emancipation and the war’s legacy. Some entries are Civil War-adjacent rather than conventional campaign films; that distinction matters when choosing what to watch.
The 20 best Civil War movies
-
Glory (1989)
A compelling starting point for viewers who want a character-centered story about Black Union soldiers. The film follows the 54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, an African American regiment that fought for the North. Its emphasis on the soldiers’ service and sacrifice makes it an essential perspective in a field of films that often center white officers or Confederate families. It is a dramatized feature, not a documentary. Mackowski’s 2026 survey found it on all 14 lists examined; it was also selected for the National Film Registry in 2025. The Library of Congress’s Registry essay collection describes its portrayal of the 54th.

-
Gettysburg (1993)
For a large-scale, battle-centered epic, Gettysburg is the natural pick. Its place in the survey on all 14 lists reflects how persistently it appears in Civil War film rankings. It is best suited to viewers interested in a sustained depiction of a major battle and the soldiers and commanders caught up in it—not someone seeking a broad account of the war’s politics or home-front consequences.
-
Lincoln (2012)
Steven Spielberg’s film shifts attention from the battlefield to national politics and Abraham Lincoln’s leadership during the fight to pass the Thirteenth Amendment. It is the strongest choice here for viewers interested in emancipation as a political struggle rather than a campaign narrative. Its focus is deliberately narrow: a political drama about a consequential moment, not a comprehensive account of the war. It appeared on 12 of the 14 lists in Mackowski’s synthesis.
-
Ride with the Devil (1999)
Ang Lee’s border-state story follows guerrilla conflict in Missouri, offering a useful contrast to familiar Union-versus-Confederate battle epics. Its focus on irregular violence and divided loyalties makes the war feel less like two neat armies facing off. Based on Daniel Woodrell’s novel Woe to Live On, it appeared on 11 of the 14 lists in the 2026 survey. The survey reports that Criterion issued a restored high-definition transfer with a 148-minute director’s cut in 2010; that historical release detail does not establish what formats or stock are currently available.
-
Cold Mountain (2003)
This adaptation of Charles Frazier’s novel follows Confederate soldier W. P. Inman’s journey home and Ada’s struggle on the home front. Its value is less as a battle film than as a character drama about separation, survival and what war does to people away from the front. It appeared on 11 of the 14 lists in the 2026 synthesis.

-
Gone with the Wind (1939)
Its cultural reach and place in film history make it difficult to omit, and it appeared on 13 of the 14 lists in the survey. But its romanticized antebellum and Confederate perspective is a serious limitation: it is not a reliable guide to slavery or the war’s causes and consequences. Watch it, if you do, as a landmark of popular filmmaking whose worldview needs critical examination—not as a neutral history.
-
The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)
Clint Eastwood’s revisionist Western is set in the violence and aftermath of the war, with border-state and guerrilla elements, rather than following a conventional campaign. That makes it a useful companion to films about armies and battles, but not a substitute for them. Its source book’s segregationist provenance, noted in Mackowski’s survey, is a reason to approach the story with historical context.
-
The Horse Soldiers (1959)
This classic studio-era adventure follows a Union cavalry mission. It brings the war to the screen through military action and a specific assignment, making it a good choice for viewers who want an older-fashioned campaign film rather than a modern political or social drama.
-
Shenandoah (1965)
A Virginia farmer and his family try to remain outside a conflict that steadily reaches into their lives. Its home-front perspective asks what neutrality can mean when a war reshapes a community and a household. Choose it for family drama, not a detailed account of military operations.

-
Friendly Persuasion (1956)
This film centers on a Quaker family confronting the moral and religious dilemmas of war. Its perspective broadens the list beyond soldiers and commanders, focusing on the costs of violence for people whose beliefs pull them away from combat.
-
The Good, the Bad and the Ugly (1966)
The Civil War provides a backdrop to Sergio Leone’s Western rather than serving as its main subject. Include it if you enjoy the conflict’s presence in genre filmmaking, but do not choose it for a sustained or comprehensive depiction of the war.
-
The Birth of a Nation (1915)
This early landmark in film form is also one of the most damaging portrayals of the era. It spans the Civil War and Reconstruction, but its overt racism and distortions helped reinforce false understandings of Reconstruction. Mackowski’s survey highlights that harmful influence; the Library of Congress includes the film in its National Film Registry essays. Its historical importance is a reason to study it critically, not a reason to recommend it without warning.
-
Gods and Generals
A battle-oriented historical drama that belongs in discussions of Civil War screen epics, though its place here is below films with clearer support in the 2026 cross-list synthesis. Viewers considering it should distinguish a dramatized military narrative from a balanced account of the war’s causes, slavery and emancipation.

-
The General (1926)
Buster Keaton’s silent comedy uses the war as the setting for a railroad chase. Its ingenuity and comic action make it an important screen adventure, but the conflict is not explored as a social or political history. It is a better pick for silent-film craft than for a historically grounded introduction.
-
Abraham Lincoln (1930)
D. W. Griffith’s earlier film about Lincoln offers another political and biographical route into Civil War-era cinema. It is most useful to viewers interested in how filmmakers represented Lincoln before later productions, rather than as a comprehensive account of the conflict.
-
Ironclads
This television drama focuses on the clash of ironclad warships, bringing naval technology and combat into a list otherwise weighted toward land campaigns and domestic stories. It is a niche choice for viewers curious about the war at sea.
-
Field of Lost Shoes
A dramatization of young cadets drawn into combat, offering a youthful point of view on military service. It broadens the roster of battle narratives, but should be approached as dramatic storytelling rather than a documentary account.

Free State of Jones
A postwar and wartime story associated with resistance to Confederate authority and the struggle over race and citizenship. It is a useful choice for viewers who want a perspective beyond celebrated generals and major set-piece battles; as with any historical drama, its interpretation should be checked against historical sources.
-
Wicked Spring
A smaller-scale soldier story that can appeal to viewers seeking a less familiar dramatic treatment of the conflict. It is not among the titles for which the 2026 survey provides the strongest consensus evidence, so its placement reflects this list’s editorial breadth rather than a validated ranking.
-
The Beguiled (1971)
Set against the war’s disruption, this Southern Gothic drama treats the conflict more as the condition surrounding an isolated community than as its central subject. It rounds out a list that includes films using the war as atmosphere, but it is not a first choice for viewers seeking battles or political history.
Which film should you watch first?
- For Black Union soldiers and emancipation: Glory.
- For a battle-centered epic: Gettysburg.
- For Lincoln and national politics: Lincoln.
- For guerrilla warfare and a divided border state: Ride with the Devil.
- For soldiers and families separated by war: Cold Mountain.
- For a film to analyze critically for its racial mythology: The Birth of a Nation—with context, not as a factual guide.
Are any of these movies historically accurate?
Historical accuracy is not a single quality that a ranking can award to a whole film. A movie may give attention to a neglected group, evoke a specific battle, or dramatize a political turning point while compressing events, inventing scenes or presenting a slanted interpretation. Glory is valuable for centering Black Union soldiers, but it remains a dramatized feature. Gone with the Wind is important to film history, yet its romanticized Confederate lens makes it a poor guide to the realities of slavery. The Birth of a Nation demands even more explicit caution because of its racist depiction and lasting distortions of Reconstruction. For learning history, pair a film with reliable historical material rather than treating screen drama as a documentary.
Why preservation status is not the same as a best-film ranking
Selection for the National Film Registry recognizes cultural and historical significance, not an official judgment that a movie is the best or most accurate. The Library of Congress says the Registry selects 25 films each year to showcase the range and diversity of American film heritage and increase awareness of preservation. Glory’s Registry selection is meaningful recognition of its place in American cinema; it does not settle how the film ranks against every other Civil War movie. The Smithsonian’s Civil War on Film program also reflects the subject’s ongoing place in public history and film culture.
