A YouTube stream disconnecting from a VPS in India is not, by itself, evidence that India or RTMP is the cause. Start with the exact stream-health message in YouTube Live Control Room, match its timestamp to encoder and VPS logs, then check the stream URL and key, encoder settings, and the VPS’s sustained outbound path to YouTube. YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream; its guidance recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. YouTube’s streaming tips
Diagnose the disconnect before changing settings
Make a record of the next failure before you restart or reconfigure anything. A timestamped comparison can help distinguish an encoder or credential error from an outbound network interruption. The available symptoms do not establish whether a particular VPS host, data center, route, or protocol is responsible.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, note the full stream-health status or error message and when it appeared. YouTube provides stream status and error information there. See your live stream’s metrics
- At the same time, save the encoder’s reconnect and error logs, plus relevant VPS network or interface events.
- Record the encoder, version, protocol, codec, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and whether the failure happens at startup or during an established stream.
- Do not share the stream key in a public post, screenshot, or support log. Treat it like a password.
The health message and logs narrow the investigation; they do not automatically identify which network segment failed. If evidence points to the VPS path, collect measurements from the VPS itself rather than relying on a speed test from your home computer.
Check the YouTube destination and stream key
Confirm that the encoder is sending to the stream URL shown for the intended YouTube broadcast and that it uses the matching stream key. YouTube describes the URL as the destination for the video feed and the key as a password-like credential. Manage live stream settings

- Open the relevant stream setup in YouTube Live Control Room and verify the destination URL and stream key against the encoder’s configuration.
- Check for a copied or outdated URL, a mismatched key, or a key entered into the wrong encoder profile.
- If the encoder reports an error starting a third-party encoder, follow YouTube’s documented remedy: generate a new stream key and update the encoder. Keep the replacement key private. Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream
A stream that starts successfully but drops later still needs network and encoder investigation; changing the key is not a general fix for every mid-broadcast disconnect.
Match protocol, codec, bitrate, and keyframes
Check the settings as a set rather than lowering quality at random. YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS, lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs for this workflow, and recommends constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. RTMPS is the secure extension of RTMP. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the codec and format you actually use.

Published H.264 bitrate recommendations
The following are YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrates for the listed formats, not measurements of what your VPS can sustain. YouTube lists different recommendations for AV1 and H.265; do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs.
| Video format | YouTube H.264 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
These figures come from YouTube’s guidance; the page does not state a publication year, and recommendations can change. Confirm the live guidance before relying on a value. A recommended encode setting cannot compensate for an unstable or undersized outbound connection.

Settings to verify in the encoder
- Protocol: use the RTMP or RTMPS destination configured for the broadcast. If switching to RTMPS, ensure the encoder supports it and is pointed at the matching destination.
- Codec and format: make the selected codec consistent with the encoder profile and the resolution and frame rate being sent.
- Rate control: set CBR as YouTube recommends for the relevant live-encoder workflow.
- Keyframes: use a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Bitrate: choose the YouTube recommendation for the actual codec and format, then confirm the VPS can deliver it with headroom.
Measure outbound capacity from the VPS
YouTube advises keeping the total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth, allowing 20% room, and using a reliable connection. It also cautions that connectivity disruptions can break a stream. Measure sustained outbound capacity from the VPS during the times the stream fails, preferably toward the relevant YouTube ingest destination; compare it with the encoder’s configured bitrate and leave the recommended margin. YouTube streaming tips
- Measure upload, not just download. A download-speed result does not establish the VPS’s outbound capacity.
- Observe the path during the failure window if possible. A brief interruption or capacity dip may be missed by a one-time test.
- Compare the measured capacity with the configured stream bitrate plus headroom. If that rate cannot be sustained, test a lower bitrate or format and check whether the disconnect pattern changes.
- Correlate any route, interface, or host events with the timestamps from Live Control Room and the encoder.
YouTube’s cited guidance does not specify a packet-loss threshold or a particular India-region routing fix. If you cannot measure toward the ingest destination, treat a generic speed test as only a partial clue, not proof that the path is healthy. Do not attribute a failure to “India” without route or host evidence.

Test recovery and backup before a long broadcast
YouTube recommends testing the setup in advance with movement and audio similar to the real event, watching stream health, and testing backup-encoder failover. Its encoder-creation guidance also covers setting up a live stream with an encoder. Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder
- Run a test broadcast using the same encoder profile, content characteristics, and intended stream settings.
- Monitor Live Control Room stream health during the test and save any message with its timestamp.
- Test the actual backup arrangement by stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its network, as appropriate to your setup.
- Check that the backup can reach YouTube through a sufficiently independent source and network path. A second encoder on the same VPS provider or route may not protect against an outage affecting that provider or path.
Separate stream transport from content and account issues
RTMP settings address how the encoder delivers a feed; they do not resolve copyright, reused-content, or account-eligibility questions. Before a broadcast, confirm you have the rights needed for the material and that the channel and content meet YouTube’s applicable live-stream and monetization policies. A stream-health or encoder error should be investigated from its exact wording rather than assumed to be a policy action, and a stable connection does not itself establish policy compliance.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
| Observed evidence | Next check |
|---|---|
| Encoder fails to start and reports a key or start error | Verify the URL and matching key; if it is a third-party encoder start error, generate a fresh key and update the encoder. |
| Stream starts, then drops near an encoder reconnect or network event | Compare the timestamp with VPS outbound measurements and interface or route logs. |
| Stream health reports delivery or bandwidth trouble | Check sustained VPS upload capacity against configured bitrate plus 20% headroom; verify the encoder’s rate control and format. |
| Bitrate and protocol appear correct but drops continue | Collect the exact health message, encoder logs, and VPS-side route observations before changing providers or blaming a region. |
