YouTube Stream Disconnects on RTMP Timeout: FFmpeg Keepalive Options

FFmpeg TCP keepalive can help detect dead idle connections, but it is not a YouTube reconnect switch. Check the endpoint, RTMPS support, network, and stream health first.

tcp_keepalive=1 enables basic TCP keepalive in FFmpeg, but it is not a general fix for YouTube stream disconnects and does not automatically reconnect a dropped broadcast. First check the YouTube stream URL and protocol, then RTMPS support and network stability. Use keepalive only as a limited transport aid for idle connections.

What FFmpeg keepalive does—and does not do

FFmpeg describes tcp_keepalive as enabling TCP keepalive “to detect dead peers and help maintain long-lived idle connections.” The option is off by default. When enabled, it switches on the operating system’s basic TCP keepalive mechanism; FFmpeg’s documented option does not let you set the operating system’s probe timing or count.

This is a transport-level aid for an idle TCP connection. It is not RTMP application traffic, a guarantee that YouTube will keep a publishing session open, or a reconnect policy. It cannot be relied on to repair an active-stream outage, bad network route, YouTube ingest issue, or incorrect endpoint. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.

The word “timeout” alone does not identify the cause. YouTube’s message “failed to connect to server — connection timed out” concerns establishing a connection; a stream that connected and later dropped calls for a different diagnosis.

Diagnose the timeout in the right order

  1. Check the endpoint and protect the key. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the current stream URL and compare it with the publishing URL in your FFmpeg command. Confirm that the stream key is the intended one. Do not include the key in logs, screenshots, examples, or support requests; replace it with a placeholder before sharing a command. YouTube explains where to find the URL and key in its encoder setup guidance.
  2. Verify RTMPS compatibility. If the URL uses RTMPS, make sure the installed FFmpeg build supports RTMPS and has the required TLS support. RTMPS is RTMP over TLS/SSL. YouTube’s guidance for a connection timeout specifically calls out the server URL, the RTMPS protocol, and encoder support. Its RTMPS guide describes RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP.
  3. Check the network path while streaming. Look for packet loss, firewall or proxy interference, and upload-speed changes at the time of the failure. YouTube recommends a reliable connection and sufficient outbound bandwidth with headroom; a disruption can break a stream. A wired Ethernet link may help if the local Wi-Fi hop is unstable, but cannot fix an ISP route, ingest-side event, or wrong URL. See YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Record the actual FFmpeg build and failure. Capture the FFmpeg version and build configuration, the command with credentials redacted, exact error lines, and timestamps. Note whether failure occurs before connection or after a period of streaming, and whether other network traffic drops at the same time. Option behavior can vary by version and build; consult the help and documentation for the binary you actually run.
  5. Check YouTube stream health. Review Live Control Room’s health indicators and messages, then correlate them with FFmpeg logs and any router or network events. A timeout message by itself is not enough to establish a root cause.

Enable TCP keepalive only when it fits the failure

For a publishing connection using FFmpeg’s TCP transport, the option is commonly applied to the output connection as -tcp_keepalive 1. For example, the placement in a command pattern is:

ffmpeg -re -i input.mp4 -c:v copy -c:a copy -f flv -tcp_keepalive 1 "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

This is a placement illustration, not a complete recommendation for every input, codec, FFmpeg build, or YouTube endpoint. Substitute the exact URL and key from Live Control Room, and never publish the real key. Verify that your installed build recognizes the option and that it applies to the output transport. Do not place an output option before -i and assume it configures the publishing connection; FFmpeg option scope matters.

The documented toggle uses operating-system defaults for keepalive timing. There is no universal timer value to add, and this switch does not tell FFmpeg to restart the stream if the connection is lost. For an exact incident, check the installed binary’s option help and the protocol documentation rather than assuming every release or build behaves identically.

Keepalive, timeout, and reconnect are different controls

Intervention Failure layer it addresses What it does not establish
Verify the URL, protocol, and RTMPS support Wrong endpoint, scheme, or unsupported secure protocol That a later network drop is fixed
tcp_keepalive=1 / TCP keepalive Basic idle-connection dead-peer detection and keepalive Reconnect, active-stream repair, or custom timer tuning
Stable network and upload headroom Local Wi-Fi instability or a constrained uplink A fix for an upstream route, YouTube ingest, or encoder fault
Reconnect supervisor or retry logic Recovery after a dropped connection, if configured and tested for the installed build Seamless continuation or preservation of every frame
YouTube encoder recommendations Encoder configuration and ingest conformance TCP session persistence

FFmpeg’s RTMP timeout option is not a generic outgoing-publisher keepalive setting: the documentation describes it as a maximum wait for an incoming connection and says it implies listen mode. I/O timeouts and reconnection behavior are separate controls, with availability and meaning dependent on the protocol implementation and FFmpeg version. Do not infer from TCP keepalive that FFmpeg will resume publishing automatically.

If you need recovery, use a reconnect-capable wrapper or a feature whose behavior is documented for your installed build. Decide on retry limits and backoff, and verify what happens to the live source and output after a failure. A reconnect can restore a connection; it does not by itself promise a seamless broadcast.

Check encoder settings separately from connection persistence

YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds that does not exceed four seconds. These are stream-configuration recommendations, not TCP keepalive settings, and they do not guarantee an uninterrupted publishing connection. Consult the current YouTube encoder recommendations for the relevant output configuration.

Common failure patterns and what to check

  • Timeout before the stream connects: Recheck the exact Live Control Room URL, protocol scheme, and whether the FFmpeg build supports RTMPS if that is the endpoint. These are YouTube’s first checks for a connection-timeout message.
  • The stream connects, then drops: Correlate the exact disconnect time with FFmpeg errors, network events, packet loss, and YouTube stream-health messages. TCP keepalive is not proof that an active-stream failure will be fixed.
  • Only one host or network fails: Compare network path, firewall or proxy behavior, and outbound capacity on that host. A wired connection can isolate an unstable local wireless link, but not an upstream problem.
  • The command accepts the option but behavior is unchanged: Confirm the option is applied to the output connection and verify the version/build’s documented behavior. Keepalive is not a reconnect switch, so unchanged behavior does not show that a retry system is configured.
  • The stream returns only after a manual restart: A recovery mechanism is a separate requirement. Configure and test an applicable supervisor or retry feature for the specific build; do not assume tcp_keepalive restarts FFmpeg’s publishing session.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a YouTube channel that stays live from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo is a cloud option rather than a change to your local FFmpeg command.
