If a Windows restart takes your YouTube 24/7 stream offline, make Windows launch OBS again and pass OBS the --startstreaming parameter. YouTube’s auto-start setting cannot reopen OBS after Windows has stopped it: the encoder must be running and sending video before YouTube can receive the stream.
Why does a 24/7 YouTube stream go offline when Windows restarts?
When OBS runs on your Windows PC, it is the encoder sending video to YouTube. Restarting Windows ends that local process. YouTube cannot restart an application on your computer, so you need Windows to launch OBS again and OBS to begin streaming.
YouTube’s auto-start option concerns starting a stream from an encoder; it does not launch an encoder that is no longer running. If you use an encoder other than OBS, follow that product’s own startup and command-line instructions rather than assuming OBS parameters apply.
Set OBS to start streaming when Windows launches it
OBS documents the launch parameter --startstreaming to start streaming automatically. For a scheduled or otherwise automated Windows launch, OBS also says to set the working directory to the folder containing obs64.exe. The executable’s location varies by installation, so use the location on your PC rather than copying a universal path.

- Check the YouTube destination. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and confirm the intended stream and stream key. The key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it as private; do not include it in a shared task command, screenshot, or public file.
- Check OBS before automating it. Confirm the YouTube service and stream settings, then load the scene, profile, and media sources that should be used after reboot. OBS recommends testing the configuration before going live.
- Prepare the OBS launch command. Use the OBS executable installed on your computer and append
--startstreamingto the command used to launch it. Verify the parameter is attached to the actual executable command, not merely typed into an unrelated shortcut or task field. - Configure Windows startup. Use your chosen Windows startup method or Task Scheduler to run that command after restart. For a scheduled task, set Start in to the directory containing
obs64.exe, as OBS specifies. Configure the task to run in the Windows sign-in context that can access the OBS profile and media. Sign-in policies, encrypted files, and sources that require an interactive desktop can prevent an unattended launch from working; the right task settings depend on your Windows version and setup. - Restart to test the whole chain. After Windows restarts, check that OBS appears, the expected scene and content load, OBS connects, and YouTube Live Control Room shows the stream. A task that launches OBS is not proof that the video reached YouTube.
- Check the stream after any change. Review YouTube’s preview and stream health, confirm the audience can access the stream, and check the resulting archive in Studio.
Tell a startup failure from a streaming failure

What to expect from a 24/7 stream’s archive
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That condition does not guarantee that a 24/7 broadcast, especially one interrupted by a restart, will produce one uninterrupted archive. Check the actual entries in YouTube Studio rather than assuming the rebooted stream continues the same recording.
