Usually, a missing Show transcript option does not mean your YouTube account is broken. YouTube’s transcript is normally available when the video has a caption track. On the desktop watch page, expand the video description and look for Show transcript. If the video has no captions, the transcript option may not exist at all.
Check the affected video first, then work through browser or app troubleshooting only if captions are available and the transcript control still does not appear.
First, check whether the video has captions
Open the video on the actual YouTube watch page—not only in an embedded player, search preview, third-party app, or simplified page. Look for the CC button in the player.
- CC is available: the video has a caption track, so a transcript may be available through the description or another current interface location.
- CC is missing or unavailable: YouTube may have no caption track to turn into a transcript. The creator may not have uploaded captions, and YouTube may not have generated automatic captions.
YouTube describes the transcript as a text version of a video’s captions. Its official instructions say to expand the video description and select Show transcript; where supported, you can search the transcript, select a line to jump to that point, and follow the text as the video plays. See YouTube’s transcript instructions.

Where “Show transcript” should appear
- Open the video’s normal YouTube watch page.
- Expand the description beneath the video by selecting More or the equivalent description-expansion control.
- Look for Show transcript.
- Select a transcript line to jump to that moment in the video. If the video supports it, use transcript search to find a word or phrase.
The precise placement can differ between desktop YouTube, the official mobile app, mobile browsers, embedded players, and interface experiments. YouTube’s documentation establishes the description as the normal route, but it does not promise an identical menu layout on every device or app version. Therefore, look in the expanded description rather than assuming the control must be inside the player’s three-dot menu.
If captions exist but the transcript is still missing
Try these steps in order. They can repair a page or app that has failed to load the transcript control, but they cannot create captions for a video that has no caption track.
1. Refresh the complete watch page
Reload the video, wait for the page to finish loading, and expand the description again. A partial page load can hide the description and other interactive controls. If the page looks unusually stripped down, the problem may be loading rather than transcript eligibility. YouTube’s playback troubleshooting guide covers page-loading and playback problems.
2. Update YouTube or your browser
Install the latest available version of the official YouTube app. On a computer, update your browser and use a currently supported browser. An outdated app, browser, or embedded web component can display an incomplete version of the watch page.

3. Test a private or incognito window
Open the same video in a private or incognito window. This is a useful test because extensions and stored site data are often disabled or separated there.

- If Show transcript appears in private browsing, an extension, cached data, or a cookie is a likely cause.
- If it is still missing, the issue is more likely video-level availability, app behavior, or a YouTube-side problem.
Ad blockers, privacy extensions, script blockers, and video-enhancement extensions can interfere with YouTube’s interactive controls. If private browsing fixes the issue, disable extensions one at a time to identify the conflict. Chrome also recommends incognito testing for some loading problems and suggests clearing browsing data when extensions or stored data are involved. Review Chrome’s private-browsing and troubleshooting guidance.
4. Clear cache and cookies
Clear YouTube’s cached files and cookies, restart the browser, sign in again if necessary, and retry the video. In the YouTube app, use your device’s app settings to clear its cache where that option is available; the exact path depends on whether you use Android or iOS.
This step can fix a damaged or stale page state. It will not make a transcript appear when the video itself has no captions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems5. Try another supported browser or device
Open the video on another current browser, the official YouTube app, or a different supported device. YouTube recommends testing another supported device when playback or page features continue to fail. If an outdated or unsupported third-party app is involved, switch to youtube.com in a current browser or the official YouTube app. YouTube also identifies a mobile browser as an alternative when an app cannot support particular content. See YouTube’s supported-device guidance and its alternative access guidance.
Why one video may have no transcript
If transcripts work on other videos but not on this one, treat the problem as video-level availability rather than an account defect. YouTube does not expose a simple viewer-facing switch that explains every missing transcript, so the following are practical explanations based on its caption documentation:

| Possible cause | What it means | What you can do |
|---|---|---|
| Captions were never supplied | The creator did not upload captions, and automatic captions may not have been generated. | Ask the creator to add captions or provide a transcript. |
| Automatic captions are still processing | New uploads may not receive captions immediately. Processing time depends on the complexity of the audio. | Wait and check again later. |
| Unsupported spoken language | YouTube may be unable to generate automatic captions for the language used. | Look for creator-provided captions or a lawful alternative transcript. |
| Long video | Video length can be one reason automatic caption generation does not complete. | Check again later, or contact the creator. |
| Poor audio | Noise, distortion, low volume, music, or unclear speech can prevent recognition. | Try any creator-provided caption track; otherwise a human-reviewed transcript may be needed. |
| Long silence at the beginning | YouTube lists an extended opening silence as a possible automatic-caption failure condition. | There is no viewer-side setting that forces caption generation. |
| Overlapping speakers or languages | Multiple people talking at once or several languages being spoken can make automatic captioning fail. | Look for manually prepared captions or request them from the creator. |
YouTube lists these conditions in its explanation of automatic-caption availability. Read YouTube’s automatic-caption limitations.
Remember that an available transcript may contain mistakes
A transcript generated from automatic captions is not guaranteed to be a verbatim record. Mispronunciations, accents, dialects, background noise, unusual names, specialist vocabulary, and overlapping speech can all produce errors.
Use the transcript as a navigation and accessibility aid. For a documentary, lecture, interview, legal matter, historical quotation, or technical claim, verify important wording against the audio and treat names, dates, numbers, and quotations with particular care.
Live streams and recently ended broadcasts work differently
Do not assume that a live stream’s captions will immediately become its permanent transcript.
YouTube says automatic live captions are a separate feature. Its current documentation describes them as English-only, available to eligible channels as the feature is rolled out, and dependent on normal latency. Poor audio, unsupported language, and overlapping speakers can prevent them from working.

When the stream ends, the live automatic captions do not simply remain attached to the replay. YouTube generates new captions through its video-on-demand process, and those captions may differ from the live captions. A recently ended broadcast may therefore have a delayed transcript—or a transcript that appears later in a different form. YouTube explains the difference between live and video-on-demand captions here.

Could the app, embed, account, or video classification be responsible?
Embedded players and third-party apps
An embedded player or unofficial app may not expose every control available on the full YouTube watch page. Test the video directly at YouTube.com or in the official YouTube app before concluding that the transcript is unavailable.
Made for Kids videos
YouTube restricts or changes several features on Made for Kids watch pages. However, the official help page does not specifically establish that Made for Kids status always removes Show transcript. Do not treat that classification alone as proof of why a transcript is missing. Caption availability and the current interface remain the primary checks. See YouTube’s Made for Kids feature restrictions.
Age, location, and account type
There is no basis here to claim that age restriction, geography, or account type independently removes Show transcript from every video. If the control fails only for one upload, investigate that upload’s caption status first. If it fails for every video with captions, investigate the app, browser, extensions, cache, and page loading.
Use this quick diagnosis
| What you observe | Most likely next step |
|---|---|
| No CC button on the affected video | There may be no caption source, so a transcript may not be available. |
| CC and transcript work on other videos, but not this one | Wait for processing, check the video’s audio and language, or ask the creator for captions. |
| CC exists, but the description is missing or incomplete | Refresh, disable extensions, test incognito, clear site data, and try another browser. |
| The transcript appears in incognito | Disable extensions individually and clear stale YouTube data. |
| The problem affects the app but not desktop | Update or reinstall the app, or use youtube.com in a current mobile browser. |
| The problem affects every device and many captioned videos | It may be a temporary YouTube-side issue; continue using the official supported routes and report the problem through YouTube’s available feedback tools. |

What to do when captions are genuinely absent
- Check again later if the video was uploaded or finished streaming recently.
- Ask the creator to upload captions or publish a transcript, especially if the video is educational, documentary, or accessibility-focused.
- Look for an official transcript elsewhere, such as the creator’s website, description, subtitles, or accompanying publication.
- Use a lawful transcription workflow only when you have the right to process the video and understand that third-party output may be inaccurate. Label it as machine-generated unless it has been reviewed by a person.
Do not download a random “transcript extractor” simply because YouTube’s own option is missing. It may violate the creator’s rights, expose you to unsafe software, or produce text without reliable timing or accuracy. A third-party tool also cannot recover captions that YouTube never generated unless it transcribes the audio separately.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does every YouTube video have a transcript?
No. YouTube’s transcript depends primarily on a usable caption track. A video may have no transcript because the creator did not provide captions and automatic captions were not generated, are still processing, or could not recognize the audio.
Where is Show transcript on YouTube?
Open the full YouTube watch page, expand the video description, and look for Show transcript. The exact placement can vary by app, browser, device, and interface version, so it may not be in the player’s three-dot menu.
Why can I see CC but not Show transcript?
The page may not have loaded all interactive controls, the app or browser may be outdated, or an extension or cached site state may be interfering. Refresh the page, try incognito, disable extensions, clear cache and cookies, and test another supported browser or device.
Can clearing cache create a missing YouTube transcript?
No. Clearing cache can repair a broken page or hidden control, but it cannot create captions for a video that has no caption track.
Do live-stream captions become the replay transcript?
Not necessarily. YouTube says live automatic captions do not remain on the replay; new captions are generated through the video-on-demand process and may appear later or differ from the live captions.
The Bottom Line
Start with CC, not with account settings. If the affected video has no captions, there may be no transcript for YouTube to show. If captions exist, use the full watch page, expand the description, refresh, update the app or browser, test incognito, disable extensions, clear stored data, and try another supported device. If the problem remains only on one video, it is probably a caption-processing or video-level issue rather than a broken account.
