Use the status and error details in YouTube Live Control Room, then check the encoder, upload connection, and viewer playback—in that order. YouTube’s general guidance does not identify a distinct India-specific cause for this symptom.
First determine where the stream is failing
An encoder’s “live” indicator confirms only what the encoder reports locally. It does not, by itself, confirm that YouTube has received the feed, that a scheduled event has been made public, or that viewers can open its watch page. Use the location of the failure to choose the next check.
- Encoder output: Is the video and audio being produced correctly?
- YouTube ingest: Does Live Control Room show the incoming stream and a healthy preview?
- Publication: Is the correct event live and accessible on its watch page?
- Viewer playback: Does the problem affect one person, one connection, or viewers on different devices and networks?
YouTube Help’s reviewed guidance does not establish that this symptom has a special cause in India, or publish an incidence rate for it. Viewer location alone is not enough to diagnose a regional problem.
Check Live Control Room and publish the event
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room. Select the correct scheduled stream, if applicable.
- Read the stream-health status and any accompanying error details. Follow the message shown there rather than changing settings at random.
- Wait for the incoming preview. Check that it shows the expected picture and that audio is present.
- If the event is scheduled, use Go live when the preview is ready and the workflow requires it. Sending an encoder feed does not necessarily publish the event automatically.
- Open the channel’s watch page and test it on a mobile device. Confirm that the event is accessible to its intended audience.
If YouTube has no incoming preview, investigate the encoder destination and feed. If the preview is healthy but viewers cannot access the event, focus on its publication state and watch page before altering encoder settings.

Verify the RTMP destination and stream key
In Live Control Room, compare the current server URL and stream key with the destination fields configured in your encoder. Check for a wrong event, outdated key, accidental whitespace, or a URL mismatch.
If the encoder reports an error starting the stream, YouTube recommends copying the stream key from Live Control Room and updating the encoder. Replacing the key is not a universal fix: if the encoder reports that it is sending successfully and YouTube receives a healthy preview, first investigate publication and viewer access instead.

Inspect the encoder before blaming the network
- Check the actual output: Look at the encoder’s preview or local recording, if available. Verify both picture and sound.
- Use representative content: Test with movement and audio similar to the planned broadcast; a static test image may not expose every problem.
- Check CPU load: Heavy load can affect encoding and produce a defective feed even while the encoder remains connected.
- Update the encoder: YouTube recommends using the latest version of third-party encoder software.
If the local output is defective, correct the encoder or system issue first. If it looks and sounds right, continue to the outbound connection test.
Test upload capacity and stability
Measure outbound upload capacity, not just download speed. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% headroom above the stream bitrate. If you send primary and backup streams, allow for their combined bitrate. Other people or devices sharing the connection can reduce the bandwidth available to the encoder, and disruptions can interrupt a stream.

- Find the total bitrate used by the stream, including any backup stream.
- Test upload performance while the network is under conditions similar to the broadcast.
- Compare available upload capacity with the stream’s total bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- If instability seems likely, test over wired Ethernet to help isolate a Wi-Fi or local-network problem. A wired test is diagnostic, not a guaranteed fix.
For a live broadcast, encoder output and network capacity are separate checks: a strong speed-test result cannot correct a wrong event, unpublished watch page, or defective encoder output.
Find out whether the problem is stream-wide or viewer-side
Ask affected viewers to open the watch page on another device and, if possible, another connection. Compare reports from viewers using different internet providers or networks.

- One viewer is affected: Check that viewer’s device, app or browser, connection, and access to the watch page.
- Several viewers on one connection are affected: A local network or provider issue is possible; compare with a different connection.
- Viewers on different connections report the same failure: Recheck Live Control Room health, encoder output, and event publication. YouTube says reports across different connections can point to an encoder issue.
YouTube’s playback guidance recognizes that viewer device and network congestion can affect playback. A stream that plays for some people but not others should not automatically be treated as an ingest failure.

Only change encoding settings when the preview, status message, or observed feed suggests an ingest or encoding problem. YouTube Help’s encoder-settings guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS, H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video options, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended two-second keyframe interval, with a four-second maximum. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations vary by codec, resolution, and frame rate; use the current official settings table for the exact combination rather than applying a number from another setup.

For H.264, YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are recommendations for those specific configurations, not universal bitrates or evidence about the cause of a particular outage. YouTube transcodes live streams into multiple outputs for viewers and devices.
