First check the OBS preview. For one repeating video, use a Media Source with Loop enabled; for several files, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist enabled. These settings repeat playback, but OBS documentation does not guarantee a gapless transition between files. If the preview is clean but viewers see black, investigate the output and encoder path rather than changing playlist controls at random.
Choose the source that matches your loop
One file: Media Source
- In OBS, add a Media Source to the scene and select the video file.
- Enable Loop in the source properties. This repeats the selected file after playback completes.
- Check Show nothing when playback ends. OBS says this hides the source after the file ends; if the image disappears at the boundary, this setting may be contributing.
Several files: VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not installed. Add a VLC Video source in OBS and add the files to its playlist.
- Enable Loop Playlist. OBS defines this as whether the source restarts after it has run out of media files.
- Review Visibility Behaviour. It controls whether playback continues, pauses, or stops when the source is not visible in the OBS scene. “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” refers to scene visibility, not whether the OBS application window is on screen.
OBS states that 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. A missing VLC Video option is a reason to check that VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS.
Find where the black screen starts
- Look at the OBS preview during the transition. If it goes black too, inspect the source’s end and visibility settings, then check whether another source is covering it.
- Check source order and visibility. In OBS, sources higher in the Sources list appear above lower sources and can obscure them. Check the eye icons and move the video above any source that should not cover it.
- If preview is fine but the YouTube stream is black, inspect OBS’s encoder/output path and logs. That preview-versus-stream check is a practical way to narrow the fault; it is not a documented diagnosis for every setup.
- Use the log and the exact symptom before changing more settings. Note whether the gap occurs on every file boundary or only particular files, which source is in use, its loop and visibility settings, and what the OBS log reports. The documentation does not establish one universal cause or promise gapless playback.
If the files differ in codec or container, or the encoder appears overloaded, those may be worth investigating when the files or logs point that way; neither is established as the cause without setup-specific evidence.
Keep 4K/60 encoding settings separate from playlist controls
YouTube’s current live encoder recommendations, accessed in 2026, list these bitrates for 2160p at 60 fps:

YouTube also recommends CBR and a 2-second keyframe frequency, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are output-encoding recommendations; they do not control how OBS advances between playlist items and do not guarantee a black-frame-free handoff.
