Yes—but only if the specific laptop can sustain 4K at 60 frames per second, render the stream without falling behind, and maintain a reliable upload connection. A short successful test does not prove a laptop will stay live around the clock. YouTube’s current recommended ingest bitrate for 4K/2160p at 60 fps is 35 Mbps with AV1 or H.265, or 50 Mbps with H.264. Check your encoder, connection and sustained performance before relying on the setup.
What determines whether your laptop can keep up?
A 24/7 loop has two separate demands: producing a stable video stream and keeping the entire setup operating over time. The file may repeat successfully while the laptop still struggles to render or encode it, or the stream may drop when the network falters. No laptop model or internet plan is specified here, so there is no universal guarantee; test the machine and connection you intend to use.
Encoding and rendering
OBS Studio must encode the video and render its scene. A supported hardware encoder can move much of the encoding work off the CPU, but it does not eliminate GPU demands for rendering. OBS also cautions that older hardware encoders may deliver lower image quality at the same bitrate. Available encoders depend on the laptop model, operating system and supported codec. OBS documents NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox, with platform-specific restrictions. In particular, OBS says Intel Macs cannot use Apple VideoToolbox for streaming because of CBR support constraints and must use x264. Check OBS’s hardware encoding guidance for compatibility details.
Upload capacity
Measure upload performance rather than relying only on the speed advertised by your internet plan. Your connection needs to sustain the selected video bitrate, with room for audio, protocol overhead and fluctuations. YouTube recommends checking upload bitrate with a speed test and choosing a quality that allows a reliable stream; it does not prescribe one universal headroom multiplier. Long-running reliability
Running continuously adds practical concerns that a brief test may not reveal: heat and sustained performance, power behavior, operating-system restarts or updates, network interruptions, and recovery after a failure. Official guidance does not certify any particular laptop for nonstop streaming. Treat these as conditions to evaluate on your actual setup, not as defects inherent to laptops.
Set the YouTube bitrate and stream settings
YouTube’s current official recommendations, accessed October 3, 2026, list these ingest bitrates for 4K/2160p at 60 fps. They are platform recommendations—not independent measurements or a guarantee of visual quality.

YouTube’s documented live settings accept RTMP/RTMPS and list H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. The table recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Select a codec your laptop and streaming software actually support, then use the corresponding bitrate target. If the connection cannot sustain it reliably, reduce output quality rather than assuming a speed test’s brief peak will hold all day.
Test a laptop before depending on it
- Identify the exact laptop and operating system. Check which hardware encoders OBS offers for your system and whether one supports your chosen codec. Do not assume a codec is available because it appears in YouTube’s settings.
- Set the output deliberately. Configure 3840×2160 at 60 fps only if the system can render and encode it consistently. Use the codec-specific bitrate above, CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, keeping YouTube’s four-second maximum in view.
- Measure and test the upload connection. Run a speed test on the connection you plan to use. Compare sustained upload capacity with the video bitrate and leave room for audio, overhead and variation. A result on another network or at another time is not a guarantee.
- Build a simple scene and test representative content. Use the actual loop or a representative segment with comparable motion and audio. YouTube recommends testing audio and motion representative of the broadcast, then monitoring stream health and messages.
- Observe the laptop under sustained load. During a longer test, watch for heat-related performance changes, OBS rendering or encoding problems, dropped or skipped frames, and YouTube stream-health warnings. This is a practical diagnostic check, not a vendor-published laptop certification test.
- Test recovery, not just startup. OBS offers automatic reconnect in its advanced settings. Test what happens after a network interruption or restart and check whether the YouTube stream resumes as expected. Reconnect is a recovery aid, not proof of uninterrupted uptime.
- Choose a fallback if 4K60 is unstable. Reduce frame rate, resolution or both. OBS notes that 60 fps can be much more demanding than 30 fps and recommends trying 30 fps when performance is unstable; lowering output resolution also reduces GPU and encoder load. Depending on the content, 4K30 or 1080p60 may be a more reliable choice.

Diagnose common failures
