YouTube retired its general Trending page and Trending Now list in 2025, but it did not remove every way to browse popular videos. The company announced the change on July 10, 2025, saying it would roll out over the following weeks. General discovery now leans more on personalized recommendations, while category-specific Charts and other browsing routes remain. In short: YouTube replaced one shared “what’s popular” destination with a more fragmented system of personal recommendations and narrower public rankings.
What YouTube removed—and what it didn’t
YouTube’s announcement concerned the broad Trending page and its Trending Now list: the shared destination that offered a snapshot of popular videos across the platform. It did not announce the end of all trending rankings. YouTube’s current Help documentation for Trending Charts still describes category-specific charts, including Trending Music Videos and Trending Movie Trailers, as well as trending gaming videos through Gaming Explore.
The change was announced on July 10, 2025. YouTube said removal would take effect “in the next couple of weeks” and “in the coming weeks,” rather than giving one universal date for every country, app, and interface. As of August 2026, the company’s Help documentation describes Charts—not a general Trending page—as the supported way to browse popular content in selected categories.
That distinction matters: the old page answered, “What is broadly popular on YouTube?” Recommendations answer, “What might this viewer want to watch?” Charts answer a narrower question: “What is popular in this category and country?”

Why YouTube says it made the change
YouTube said the Trending page launched in 2015, when a single list seemed a straightforward way to represent viral videos. Since then, trends have become more fragmented across fandoms and communities, and discovery has spread across Shorts, comments, search suggestions, and recommendations. The company also said visits to Trending had fallen significantly, particularly over the preceding five years. Its view is that personalized recommendations better reflect how people now find videos. These are YouTube’s stated reasons, not evidence that every viewer preferred the change.
YouTube did not say that the decision was primarily about advertising revenue, suppressing particular content, or removing human curation. Those could be subjects for broader analysis, but they should not be presented as established motives on the evidence of the announcement.

YouTube’s recommendation system uses signals such as clicks, watch time, survey responses, likes, dislikes, and sharing, alongside a viewer’s past habits and the behavior of people with similar interests. Recommendations primarily appear on Home and Up Next. They are not the same thing as Charts: one is designed to predict personal relevance; the other ranks popular content in defined categories. YouTube’s explanation of its recommendation system describes those signals and surfaces.

How YouTube Charts work
Charts are the clearest remaining way to check certain public trends. YouTube says they are not personalized: viewers in the same country see the same chart videos. That makes a Chart more comparable between people than a Home feed, though the list may not reflect a viewer’s language or interests. Chart availability and contents can vary by country and category.

A Chart is not simply a leaderboard sorted by total views. YouTube says it weighs several factors, including view count, how quickly views are growing, where views originate (including outside YouTube), the video’s topic and age, and how it performs relative to recent uploads from the same channel. Charts aim to surface relevant, rapidly growing, non-misleading videos while including a range of creators. They update approximately every 30 minutes.
- A video with the most total views is not guaranteed to rank first; a lower-view video may rank higher based on other signals.
- Views generated through YouTube advertising are excluded from the view-count measurement used for Trending Charts.
- A video must be public to appear on a Chart. Restricted Mode may hide some videos.
- YouTube says creators cannot pay for Chart placement and that it does not favor particular creators for chart ranking.
For current category options, visit YouTube Charts or the Charts Help page. The Gaming Explore page is the route YouTube identifies for trending gaming videos. Menus and availability can differ across web and mobile, country, language, account state, and product tests, so a link or label may not look identical for everyone.

How to find popular videos now
- Want music or movie trailers? Open YouTube Charts and choose the relevant chart, if it is available in your country.
- Want gaming trends? Browse the Gaming area through Gaming Explore.
- Want podcasts? YouTube’s announcement referred to Weekly Top Podcast Shows; check whether that chart is available in your region.
- Want videos suited to your own interests? Use Home and Up Next, understanding that these are personalized.
- Want uploads from creators you already follow? Use Subscriptions or open a creator’s channel page.
- Want to browse beyond your usual viewing pattern? Try Explore, search, and category Charts. These offer routes beyond Home, but they are not all entirely free of ranking or recommendation logic.
YouTube has not documented a setting or browser trick that restores the retired general Trending page. Country-specific Charts are also not a substitute for seeing what a personalized feed in another country looks like; the two systems answer different questions.

For category-level research, Charts can show what is gaining attention in a supported field. Read the ranking in context: look at the video’s age, topic, view growth, and performance relative to that channel’s recent uploads rather than treating its position as a forecast. A Chart is a snapshot of popularity, not a guarantee that the subject will keep growing or suit your audience.

For channel-specific planning, creators can look for the Inspiration area in YouTube Studio. YouTube says the tool offers ideas tailored to creators’ audiences. Treat suggestions as prompts, not proof of demand: validate them against your channel’s Analytics, audience feedback, search interest, and the time and resources required to make the video.
Competitive research is now spread across more places: category Charts, search, Shorts, creator channels, and the recommendations visible to individual viewers. A Home feed is not a stable public benchmark; another creator may see different suggestions, and you cannot reliably reproduce someone else’s recommendation experience. YouTube has also said it will continue to highlight Creators on the Rise through official social channels and its YouTube channel.
For creators, the potential upside is that recommendations may connect a niche video with viewers who already show interest in its subject, rather than requiring it to compete for one broad public ranking. The trade-off is that creators lose a single, easily inspected reference point for platform-wide popularity. How much that matters will depend on the channel, category, geography, and how much it relied on broad discovery.
What the shift means for viewers and the platform
The old Trending page offered a shared cultural reference: people could look at one list and compare what they were seeing with a common snapshot. Personalized recommendations can make it easier to find niche videos and content relevant to an individual, but they also mean two viewers may inhabit different discovery environments. That is an implication of the design shift, not a motive YouTube stated.
The result is not the end of non-personalized discovery. Charts remain non-personalized within a country, and viewers can still use subscriptions, search, Explore, and creator pages. But there is no longer one obvious, broad answer to “What is popular on YouTube right now?” To answer that, viewers must choose between a personal feed and narrower category rankings.
