Yes, some U.S. YouTube Premium subscribers are seeing higher prices, including people who believed they still had a grandfathered rate. The standard individual plan is now $15.99 per month, up from $13.99, while the family plan is $26.99, up from $22.99. Existing subscribers began moving to the new rates during their June 2026 billing cycles, after receiving advance notice.
But this is not proof that Google has ended every grandfathered price worldwide. Legacy rates have varied by country, subscription history, plan and billing provider. Check the price shown on your own account before canceling, changing plans or switching billing platforms.

The 2026 U.S. YouTube Premium prices
The following are reported U.S. web prices. They may not match the amount charged through Apple, another partner or local taxes.

The prices were reported from Google’s subscriber notices and the 2026 rollout. They are not universal worldwide prices. Your account’s notice and membership page take priority over any general price table.

When did the increase take effect?
New U.S. subscribers were offered the higher prices during Google’s April 2026 rollout. Existing subscribers generally saw the new charge in their June 2026 billing cycle. Some notices identified June 7 as the first affected billing date, but the date depends on each account’s billing schedule.
YouTube’s price-change policy says members should receive at least 30 days’ notice. In general, the new price begins with the first billing cycle that occurs at least 30 days after the increase.
What “grandfathered price” means
A grandfathered price is an older recurring rate preserved for some existing customers when a service changes its name, plan structure or standard pricing. Potential legacy groups include people who:
- Joined Google Play Music All Access before YouTube Premium existed.
- Subscribed to YouTube Red at an earlier price.
- Moved into YouTube Premium while retaining an older recurring rate.
- Received a promotional or partner-specific price.
Not every early subscriber received the same protection. Treatment depended on the country, subscription type, billing channel and terms communicated when the subscription began.

This is separate from the earlier legacy-price change
There are two related but distinct events:
- January 2024: Google ended many older U.S. legacy rates, moving some subscribers who paid $7.99 or $9.99 to the then-current $13.99 Premium price after an additional grandfathering period.
- 2026: The regular U.S. individual price rose from $13.99 to $15.99, and the family price rose from $22.99 to $26.99.
That means a subscriber may have lost an older YouTube Red or Google Play Music rate in 2024 and then received another increase in 2026. Conversely, some people reported still having legacy pricing in 2026. User reports show that account treatment can differ, but they do not establish a universal Google policy.
The available public information does not confirm that every remaining legacy account worldwide is being moved to the same price. The defensible conclusion is narrower: the confirmed U.S. price increase is reaching existing subscribers, including some people who still considered themselves grandfathered.

How to check your exact price
- Sign in to the Google account used for YouTube Premium.
- Open YouTube and select your profile picture.
- Choose Purchases and memberships.
- Open your YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium membership.
- Review the recurring price, next billing date, billing provider and any pending price-change notice.
Compare this information with the email Google sent you. Do not rely on an old bank statement or a remembered historical price. Taxes can also change the final amount separately from the subscription’s base price.
Do not cancel before checking the replacement price
Canceling normally stops future renewals while allowing Premium benefits to continue until the end of the paid billing period. It does not guarantee that YouTube will preserve or restore your old rate.
If you re-subscribe later, you will generally be offered the price displayed at that time. Google’s help pages explain how to rejoin, but they do not promise that a canceled legacy subscription can be reinstated at its former price. If your current rate is unusually low, treat cancellation as potentially irreversible.
Before canceling, check:
- The new recurring price on your account.
- The price of any replacement plan.
- Whether your family members depend on the subscription.
- Whether you use YouTube Music, downloads or background playback.
- Whether an annual plan’s upfront cost is acceptable.
Pausing does not preserve the old price
Pausing is not a reliable way to protect grandfathered pricing. YouTube’s price guidance says a paused membership is charged at the new price when it resumes.
Be careful when changing plans
Switching from individual to family, Premium to Premium Lite, monthly to annual, or direct billing to a partner may create a new subscription at the currently offered price. Do not assume that a plan change carries forward your legacy status.
YouTube directs members to manage plans through Purchases and memberships. Annual-plan eligibility also generally requires canceling an existing recurring membership before signing up, which can permanently end a valuable grandfathered rate.

Apple and other billing partners can be different
Subscribers who joined through Apple may see a different price and must generally manage the subscription through Apple. Partner billing can also follow different cancellation and renewal rules.
iPhone and iPad users should compare:
- The membership details in YouTube.
- The subscription amount in Apple’s Subscriptions settings.
- The price and terms displayed before moving between billing routes.
Do not assume that the $15.99 U.S. web price is what every iOS subscriber pays.
What Premium still includes
The core YouTube Premium package continues to include ad-free viewing, background playback, downloads and YouTube Music Premium, although availability can vary by product and region. The 2026 reporting does not identify a major new Premium benefit corresponding to the price increase.
Premium Lite is not a complete replacement. It is cheaper, but it does not include the full YouTube Music Premium package and has narrower ad-removal and feature coverage. Check the plan-selection page for the exact exclusions in your country.

Keep full Premium
This is the strongest fit for people who watch YouTube daily, use YouTube Music, need background playback or downloads, or watch across several devices. The trade-off is the higher $15.99 monthly U.S. individual price.
Consider Premium Lite
Lite may suit viewers who mainly want a cheaper YouTube experience and can live without the full Premium bundle. It is not a direct substitute for YouTube Premium, especially for music users, people who need complete ad removal or households that need family sharing.

Depending on the account, an existing Premium subscriber may need to end the current membership before changing plans. Check the displayed terms before taking that step.
Consider the annual plan
The reported U.S. individual annual price is $159.99, equivalent to about $13.33 per month before tax. It is prepaid, non-recurring and individual-only. It does not provide a family equivalent, and YouTube’s documentation says annual plans are not refundable or pausable.
Paying annually may reduce the effective cost compared with 12 months at $15.99, but a current recurring subscriber generally has to cancel first and wait for existing access to end. That makes it a poor trade if cancellation would sacrifice a much cheaper legacy rate.
Use a family plan legitimately
The U.S. family plan costs $26.99 per month and supports up to six people under YouTube’s family-group rules. It is not a general-purpose arrangement for unrelated users living in different locations. Calculate the household cost before abandoning a valuable individual grandfathered plan.
Return to ad-supported YouTube
Canceling may make sense if you rarely use YouTube Music, background playback or downloads. The trade-off is that ads return, Premium convenience features are lost, and returning later may mean paying the then-current price.
Use separate music and video services
Someone who rarely watches YouTube may prefer ad-supported YouTube alongside a separate music service. Someone who relies on both ad-free video and YouTube Music may get more value from Premium despite the increase. Compare current prices and features for your country rather than assuming another service is automatically cheaper.

Open Purchases and memberships, record your current price and next billing date, and read the price-change email. Then compare the cost of staying, downgrading, switching to annual billing or canceling. If the email and account page disagree, contact YouTube Support before changing the subscription.
