You can watch eligible Xfinity live TV, On Demand programs, DVR recordings, and selected purchases on a compatible Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Apple TV without using an Xfinity cable box at that television. The app itself does not add a separate app fee, but you need eligible Xfinity service, an Xfinity ID, the right channel lineup, and an internet connection. Compatibility and available programming vary by device, location, and service level.
Before buying anything, check whether your existing device meets Xfinity’s current requirements.
Compatibility at a glance
| Platform | Minimum software | Important compatibility check |
|---|---|---|
| Roku | Roku OS 11.0 or later | Only supported models show Xfinity Stream in the Roku Channel Store. Xfinity no longer updates the app on 2017 Roku devices. |
| Amazon Fire TV | Fire OS 6 or later | The device must support the app through the Amazon Appstore. App version 7.4.1 or later is required for all content; version 8.6 or later is required for 4K content. |
| Apple TV | tvOS 18 or later | Supported hardware includes Apple TV HD (2015), Apple TV 4K (2017), and Apple TV 4K (2021). App version 1.10.0 or later is required for 4K. |
For exact model support, use the Xfinity requirements page rather than relying only on a product’s retail name. A compatible 4K television and suitable HDMI connection are also required for 4K, and ordinary programming is not converted to 4K simply because the streaming device supports it.
What you need before installing
- A supported Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV connected to the television
- A working Wi-Fi or wired internet connection
- An Xfinity ID and password associated with the desired account
- Eligible Xfinity TV service for the full live-TV and On Demand experience
- A phone, tablet, or computer for activation
- Your normal in-home Xfinity network if you are watching at home
Xfinity Internet-only customers may receive access to selected content, but Internet service alone should not be treated as a replacement for an Xfinity TV subscription. The program or channel must also be included in your lineup.

What you can watch
After activation, use the remote to browse the app’s live-TV section or guide, On Demand area, DVR recordings, and search controls where available. What appears depends on your Xfinity plan and location. A channel must be part of your lineup, and individual programs can be restricted by licensing, regional rules, blackouts, or whether you are inside the home.
Pay-per-view events are not available through the app according to Xfinity’s Fire TV and Apple TV guidance.
Watching at home and away
For the broadest access at home, connect the Roku, Fire TV, or Apple TV to the in-home Xfinity network associated with your account. A guest network, mobile hotspot, neighboring router, or the XFINITYwifi hotspot may not satisfy the in-home requirement.
Outside the home, Xfinity says more than 250 channels may be available, but the exact selection varies. Fire TV identifies eligible out-of-home programming as TV Go. Remote viewing does not provide the same full channel lineup and On Demand access available on the home network. Hotel and friend’s-house viewing therefore depends on the available network and the program’s TV Go eligibility.

Concurrent-stream limits
Streaming limits apply across the account’s phones, tablets, computers, and TV devices—not separately to each television:
- Xfinity X1: up to five concurrent streams, with no more than three outside the in-home Wi-Fi network.
- Xfinity Instant TV: two concurrent streams.
- Xfinity On Campus: one concurrent stream.
Troubleshooting common problems
The app does not appear in the store
- Check the device model and required operating-system version.
- Restart the device and install any available software update.
- Search for the exact name Xfinity Stream.
- Check the device’s regional account or store settings.
- Review Xfinity’s compatibility page.
If the app remains unavailable, the device is likely unsupported. Use a supported streaming device or cast from a compatible mobile device instead.
The activation code fails or expires
Reopen or restart the app to generate a new code, then enter the newest code at xfinity.com/authorize. Use a separate browser device, check that autofill has not inserted another account, and sign in with the Xfinity ID tied to the correct TV service. If multiple accounts are linked, correct the primary account and repeat the process.
The app says you must be on the home network
Check the TV device’s Wi-Fi name. It should be your actual in-home Xfinity network—not XFINITYwifi, a guest network, a hotspot, or an incorrectly configured third-party mesh network. Restart both the gateway or router and the streaming device.

A channel or program is missing
Confirm that the channel is in your plan and that you are not viewing outside the home. The program may be subject to a blackout, licensing restriction, regional limitation, TV Go restriction, or pay-per-view exclusion. Updating the app and device software can also help.
Playback buffers or looks poor
- Test the device’s internet connection and restart the streaming device.
- Restart the router or gateway.
- Move a Wi-Fi stick closer to the router if practical.
- Pause other high-bandwidth activity.
- Update the Xfinity Stream app and device OS.
- Try another app, then test the same Xfinity account on a phone or computer.
If only one channel fails while other streams work, the issue may be content availability rather than the device. Streaming over cellular service may also incur data charges.
Streaming continues to use data
Xfinity says channels or content may continue using internet data after you stop actively watching. If that is a concern, log out of the Xfinity Stream app or portal when finished.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Alternatives when the native app is unavailable
You can cast from a compatible phone or tablet using Chromecast or Apple AirPlay. AirPlay can send Xfinity Stream content from a compatible iPhone or iPad to Apple TV and certain compatible televisions or Roku devices. This is useful for temporary viewing, but it depends on the mobile device, can drain its battery, and is less convenient than a native TV app. See Xfinity’s AirPlay instructions.

Xfinity also lists Xumo Stream Box from Xfinity and Xfinity Flex devices as supported platforms, subject to current availability and terms.
Should you buy a new streaming device?
Check compatibility before spending money. A recent supported Roku or Fire TV is generally the economical route for adding Xfinity Stream to an HDMI television. Apple TV 4K is a better fit for households already invested in Apple devices, AirPlay, or a premium interface. A Roku Ultra or Apple TV 4K with Ethernet can make sense when Wi-Fi near the television is unreliable.
Hardware prices and models change. Current official product pages include Roku’s player range, Roku Ultra, Amazon Fire TV, and Apple TV 4K. Buying a device does not create Xfinity TV access; programming remains tied to eligible Xfinity service and your channel lineup.
