YouTube Premium Lite is no longer merely “coming” to the United States: YouTube expanded it to US users in March 2025. The cheaper tier now adds background play and downloads for most eligible videos, but it still excludes YouTube Music Premium and does not promise an ad-free, offline or background-listening experience for music content. If you mainly watch creator, gaming, news or education videos, Lite can be worthwhile. If you use YouTube as a music service, full YouTube Premium—or a separate music subscription—is usually the better fit.
What Premium Lite includes in the US today
YouTube’s current help documentation describes Premium Lite as a lower-cost membership for watching most YouTube and YouTube Kids videos with fewer interruptions. The plan includes:

- Ad-free viewing for most non-music videos.
- Background play for most eligible videos, added in February 2026.
- Offline downloads for most eligible videos, also added in February 2026.
- Access to YouTube and YouTube Kids content subject to content and feature exclusions.
“Most videos” matters. Lite is not a blanket ad-removal pass for every page, format or category on YouTube. See YouTube’s current eligibility details at YouTube Help.
Where ads and other limitations remain
According to YouTube, ads may still appear on music content, in Shorts, and while you search or browse. A selected video can therefore be free of conventional pre-roll or mid-roll ads while the surrounding YouTube interface still contains advertising.

Premium Lite also cannot remove a sponsorship or promotion recorded inside a creator’s video. That message is part of the video itself, rather than an ad inserted by YouTube.
Music videos and Art Tracks
Official or premium music videos and Art Tracks are among the music-related content outside Lite’s full ad-free guarantee. They may remain watchable, but Lite does not promise the same ad-free treatment, downloads or background play available for ordinary eligible videos.
Music in user-generated videos
YouTube’s examples also include children’s songs and some user-generated videos containing music licensed from YouTube’s music partners, such as covers, dance videos or vlogs with a popular song in the background. A video that looks like ordinary commentary or lifestyle content to you can still be handled as music-related content.

Shorts and page-level advertising
Shorts remain excluded even though they are hosted on YouTube. Search and browse pages can also show ads, so an ad-free playback result does not mean every screen in the app is ad-free.

Full Premium is the bundle YouTube points to for users who want all videos—including music content—to work ad-free, offline and in the background, together with YouTube Music Premium. Its broader positioning is outlined by YouTube at YouTube’s Premium announcement.
US pricing: check your account before subscribing
As of August 18, 2026, US pricing reports put Premium Lite at $8.99 per month, up from its reported $7.99 launch price. The same reporting puts an individual full YouTube Premium membership at $15.99 per month. These are current reported figures, not a universal promise: taxes, payment channel, promotions, trials, location and account eligibility can change the amount shown to you.

YouTube directs customers to its account-specific checkout pages rather than maintaining a single static price table. Check youtube.com/premiumlite and, for comparison, youtube.com/premium immediately before confirming. The reported 2026 increase is covered by TechRadar.
What changed since Lite launched?
March 2025: US expansion
YouTube announced the US expansion on March 5, 2025. At launch, Lite was a cheaper, video-focused tier that reduced ads on most ordinary videos but did not include downloads or background play. The launch announcement is at Google’s announcement.

February 2026: downloads and background play
On February 24, 2026, YouTube announced downloads and background play for most eligible videos on Lite. The update did not remove the exclusions for Shorts or music content; YouTube’s notice is available in its Community announcement.

Who should choose Premium Lite?
It is a good fit if you:
- Watch many non-music creator, gaming, news, documentary, education or commentary videos.
- Mainly want fewer conventional video ads.
- Do not need YouTube Music Premium.
- Want to download or listen in the background to eligible spoken-word or other ordinary videos.
- Rarely use Shorts or music videos.
It is a poor fit if you:
- Use YouTube mainly for albums, playlists, concerts or music videos.
- Want to listen with your phone screen locked.
- Need music downloads for travel or unreliable connectivity.
- Spend a large share of your time in Shorts.
- Expect search and browse pages to be completely ad-free.
- Already rely on full Premium’s family sharing or YouTube Music benefits.
How to test Lite before your first renewal
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite and confirm the recurring US price, trial and promotion shown for your account.
- Play a standard creator or documentary video and note whether ads are removed.
- Play an official music video or Art Track, then test a Short.
- Lock your phone or switch apps to test background play on the ordinary video and on the music item.
- Download an eligible ordinary video over Wi-Fi and verify that it appears in YouTube’s downloads area.
- Search and browse around the service to see whether page-level ads remain.
- If the result is not useful, cancel before the next renewal under the terms shown on your account.
Availability and behavior can vary during expansion, by account and by content. If a normal non-music video still shows an ad, confirm that you are signed into the subscribing Google account, that membership activation has completed and that the app is current. For background-play problems, first test eligible non-music content, restart or update YouTube, check its background-play setting and contact paid-services support if the problem continues. YouTube’s terms also note that content availability can change: Premium service restrictions.
Alternatives when Lite is not the right boundary
Full YouTube Premium
Choose full YouTube Premium when you want ad-free YouTube across a broader range of content, YouTube Music Premium, background listening and downloads that cover music as well as ordinary videos.
YouTube Music Premium
If your real goal is ad-free music, background listening and music downloads—not removing ads from creator videos—compare the music-focused membership at YouTube Music. Check its checkout page for the current US price.

Standalone music services
Spotify Premium, Apple Music and Amazon Music are alternatives for listeners who want a conventional music-first catalog and do not need ad-free YouTube video. Their current prices and bundle eligibility depend on the service and account.
The practical verdict
Premium Lite is best understood as a narrower product boundary, not simply “Premium at a discount.” Choose it when reducing ads on ordinary YouTube videos is the main objective. Choose full YouTube Premium when music, screen-off listening, YouTube Music, Shorts or broader downloads matter. Choose a standalone music service when music is the priority and YouTube video benefits are irrelevant.
