YouTube Premium Lite is no longer merely “coming soon” to the United States. YouTube announced its U.S. expansion on March 5, 2025. As of August 16, 2026, the lower-priced plan offers most regular YouTube and YouTube Kids videos without ads, plus background play and downloads for most eligible videos. It still shows ads on music content, Shorts, and YouTube search and browsing pages, and it does not include YouTube Music Premium.
In the U.S., Premium Lite launched at $7.99 per month, while a later April 2026 report put the price at $8.99 per month. Because YouTube uses localized pricing, the price displayed at official signup is the one that applies to your account.
The short answer
The older description of Premium Lite as a plan “reportedly coming soon” is now outdated. YouTube announced the U.S. expansion in March 2025, following pilot availability in Thailand, Germany, and Australia. The rollout was gradual rather than simultaneous for every account.
Premium Lite is a cheaper tier of YouTube Premium, not a separate video service. It is designed for people who mainly watch ordinary, non-music videos and want fewer interruptions without paying for the full Premium package.

The most important update came on February 24, 2026, when YouTube announced that background play and downloads were being added in markets where Premium Lite was available. Older articles may therefore incorrectly say that Lite lacks both features.
Its central limitation remains: Premium Lite does not make all of YouTube ad-free.

According to YouTube Help, Premium Lite currently provides most of the following benefits:
- Most conventional YouTube videos without advertising during playback.
- Most YouTube Kids videos without advertising.
- Background play for most eligible videos.
- Downloads for most eligible videos and playlists.
“Most” is important. Background play and downloads do not apply to Shorts or specified music-related content. Availability can also vary by country, device, operating system, plan, and account.

What still has ads?
Premium Lite should not be described as “ad-free YouTube.” YouTube says ads may still appear in several parts of the service:
- Music content: This can include official music videos, premium music videos, Art Tracks, children’s songs, and user-generated videos containing music-partner content. Examples include covers, dance videos, or vlogs using popular music.
- Shorts: Shorts remain outside the full Lite benefit set.
- Search and browsing: Ads may appear while searching for videos or browsing YouTube, even when the video you eventually watch is eligible for ad-free playback.
- Creator-read promotions: Premium Lite cannot remove sponsorships, product placements, or promotions recorded directly into a creator’s video.
This means a viewer could watch a gaming, educational, news, cooking, or commentary video without an inserted YouTube ad but still encounter advertising while finding it or move to a music video and see ads there.

YouTube’s paid-service terms warn that features can vary by geography, device, operating system, price, and plan. The table is therefore a practical comparison, not a guarantee that every device will behave identically.
Does Premium Lite include YouTube Music Premium?
No. This is the clearest dividing line between the two plans. Premium Lite is aimed at general video viewing; it does not include YouTube Music Premium and does not provide the full ad-free treatment for music content.
Full YouTube Premium is the better choice if you regularly listen to albums, music videos, Art Tracks, playlists, or music through the YouTube Music app. It is also the more consistent option if you want background play and downloads for music.

Price: what U.S. viewers should expect
YouTube announced a U.S. Premium Lite price of $7.99 per month on March 5, 2025. TechRadar reported on April 10, 2026, that the U.S. price had increased to $8.99 per month. The same report put full individual YouTube Premium at $15.99 per month and the family plan at $26.99 per month.
The $8.99 figure should be treated as a reported U.S. price signal rather than a universal price. YouTube directs users to the localized signup page to see the applicable charge. Taxes, billing platform, promotions, trials, account eligibility, and country can affect what appears at checkout.
At those reported U.S. prices, Lite costs about $7 less per month than full individual Premium before taxes or billing-platform differences. The value depends on what you watch, not merely on the size of the discount.
Apple or Google Play billing may show a different price or apply different refund rules from a web subscription. Check the final amount before confirming payment.
Where is Premium Lite available?
YouTube’s March 2025 announcement identified the United States, Thailand, Germany, and Australia as the markets involved in the expansion and pilot. A May 2025 YouTube community update said the U.S. rollout was continuing gradually and referred to expansion to additional viewers.

Because availability can change, the definitive authority is YouTube’s current country and availability page, not an old country list in a news article. Open the page and the Premium Lite signup page while signed in to confirm whether the plan is offered in your location.
Seeing the plan in one country does not mean it is available to every account in that country. Rollout status, account eligibility, platform, billing route, and local product rules can affect access.
Who should choose Premium Lite?
Premium Lite is a sensible choice if you:
- Mostly watch gaming, news, education, commentary, cooking, beauty, fashion, comedy, or other non-music videos.
- Mainly want to reduce ads at the lowest official YouTube price.
- Want background play or downloads for ordinary videos.
- Do not use YouTube Music.
- Can tolerate ads on Shorts, music, search, and browsing pages.
Full YouTube Premium is worth considering if you:
- Watch music videos or music-related content frequently.
- Use YouTube Music Premium.
- Want the broadest possible ad-free experience.
- Need downloads or background play for music.
- Care about features such as queuing, Continue watching, Jump ahead, or higher-quality audio and video.
- Watch a large amount of Shorts and do not want advertising there.
A Shorts-heavy viewer may find Lite disappointing even if they rarely watch music. A family subscriber should also verify the exact plan offered in their country rather than assuming that a Premium Lite family plan exists.

How to sign up
- Open youtube.com/premiumlite.
- Sign in to the Google account that will use the membership.
- Review the localized price, terms, and available payment options.
- Complete payment if Premium Lite is offered for the account and location.
If the page does not show Premium Lite, confirm that the account is in a supported country and try the web signup route while signed in. An in-app purchase flow may display different billing options or pricing.
If Premium Lite does not appear
- Confirm that your account and current country are supported.
- Open the official signup page while signed in.
- Check YouTube paid memberships for existing or eligible plans.
- Try the web route rather than subscribing inside an app.
- Compare the displayed price with the price shown through Apple or Google Play before purchasing.
Do not use a VPN or misrepresent your signup country to obtain a cheaper plan. YouTube’s paid-service terms require use of Premium services from the signup country and warn that misrepresenting the country can lead to termination or loss of access. Travel, moving countries, and prolonged use outside the signup market can also affect availability.
How to upgrade to full Premium
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage Membership beside Premium Lite.
- Select Upgrade beside the desired Premium plan.
- Select Confirm.
The exact transition and billing details may depend on how the original subscription was purchased.
How to cancel Premium Lite
- Go to youtube.com/paid_memberships.
- Select Manage membership.
- Select Deactivate.
- Select Continue to cancel.
- Choose a reason and select Next.
- Select Yes, cancel.
If you subscribed through Apple or Google Play, that platform may control cancellation, billing, and refund handling.
