YouTube Premium now offers higher-quality audio at up to 256 kbps for eligible music videos and Art Tracks, plus playback speeds of up to 4x with finer 0.05x adjustments where supported. The audio upgrade is available in both the YouTube and YouTube Music apps, but it is still compressed, lossy audio—not lossless or hi-res streaming.
The features were announced in January 2025 and rolled out progressively. Availability can vary by account, country, app version, device, connection, and the type of music upload.

YouTube’s announcement introduced the package as a set of Premium improvements rather than a new standalone audio subscription.

What “high-quality audio” actually means
The maximum advertised rate is 256 kbps for eligible music videos and Art Tracks. That is higher-quality lossy streaming: the audio is compressed and some information is discarded.

In practical terms, YouTube’s update does not establish a lossless tier comparable to FLAC or ALAC, CD-quality lossless streaming, or high-resolution audio. It is therefore inaccurate to call the feature “lossless,” “CD quality,” or “hi-res” based solely on the 256 kbps figure.
Whether anyone hears a meaningful improvement depends on the recording, the uploaded master, headphones or speakers, Bluetooth codec, listening environment and volume matching. Some listeners may notice greater clarity; others may hear little or no difference.

Premium cannot create detail that is absent from the original file. YouTube says maximum quality depends on the original upload and the user’s connection, in addition to content and device eligibility.

That distinction matters because YouTube contains many versions of the same song:
- Official music videos
- Official audio and Art Tracks
- Lyric videos
- Live performances
- Fan uploads and covers
- Re-uploads and unofficial copies
These versions do not necessarily share the same source quality or Premium controls. A 256 kbps setting is a ceiling, not a guarantee that every play will use that rate.
Where the audio feature works
YouTube’s help documentation lists high-quality audio in both the main YouTube app and the YouTube Music app. That makes this more than a YouTube Music-only change: eligible music can benefit inside the broader YouTube experience too.
However, the controls are not identical everywhere. Android, iPhone and iPad apps, the YouTube website, smart TVs, game consoles and embedded players may expose different settings. An app update or staged account rollout may also affect what appears.

How to find high-quality audio
- Confirm that you are signed in to the Google Account with an active full YouTube Premium membership.
- Update the YouTube or YouTube Music app.
- Open the app’s playback or audio-quality settings.
- Select the highest available audio-quality option, if the control is shown.
- Play an eligible official music video or Art Track and check whether the higher-quality option is available.
Menu names and locations can change by app version and platform, so there is no single permanent path that applies to every device. YouTube confirms support for both apps but does not promise identical controls on every account.
If the option is missing
- Check that you are not signed into a different Google Account.
- Verify that the subscription is full YouTube Premium rather than Premium Lite.
- Try an official music video or Art Track instead of a third-party upload.
- Update the app and restart it.
- Test both YouTube and YouTube Music where appropriate.
- Check your Premium benefits page for account availability.
- Allow for staged, regional or device-specific rollout differences.
Faster playback now reaches 4x
Premium users can access playback speeds of up to 4x on supported mobile experiences, with finer adjustments in 0.05x increments where the expanded controls are available.
- Open a video in the official YouTube app or website.
- Open the Settings gear.
- Select Playback speed.
- Choose a preset or use the fine-grained control.
- Select up to 4x if that option is available on your account and device.
Four-times playback is more useful for documentaries, lectures, tutorials, interviews and podcasts than for ordinary music listening. It can help viewers scan familiar material or move quickly through slower sections, although dialogue becomes harder to follow at extreme speeds.

Do not confuse 4x playback with Auto speed
Playback speed is a manual setting for the whole video or listening session. Auto speed is a separate Premium podcast feature that dynamically changes speed during selected portions. YouTube described Auto speed as available on Android, with iOS availability planned separately in its podcast-focussed announcement.
That feature does not improve music quality and is not a replacement for the 4x control.
How the update affects downloads and Bluetooth listening
Downloaded content may use the quality selected in the app’s download settings, rather than automatically applying the highest possible setting to every existing download. Check download-quality settings separately and redownload content if necessary.
Bluetooth headphones can also re-encode audio using the connection’s codec. Built-in phone speakers, inexpensive earbuds, background noise and mismatched volume levels may mask differences between quality settings. A fair comparison requires the same track and master, matched volume, the same hardware and similar listening conditions.

Should you pay for YouTube Premium?
The audio feature alone is unlikely to justify Premium for listeners whose priority is lossless or high-resolution music. A service such as Apple Music, Tidal or Qobuz is a more natural fit when audio specifications are the main purchase criterion.
YouTube Premium is more compelling as a bundle. It combines ad-free access to regular YouTube videos with background playback, offline downloads and YouTube Music Premium. It also provides access to a particularly broad video-and-music ecosystem: official releases alongside covers, live performances, remixes, DJ sets, interviews and creator uploads.
Premium is strongest for
- People who watch YouTube frequently and want to remove ads.
- Listeners who already use YouTube Music.
- Users who need background playback and offline downloads.
- Viewers of documentaries, tutorials, podcasts and educational videos who want faster playback.
- People who prefer one subscription for video and music.
The audio upgrade is a weak reason to subscribe if you
- Already have a lossless or hi-res music service.
- Listen mainly through basic speakers or low-quality Bluetooth hardware.
- Mostly watch non-music videos and do not need music access.
- Expect every upload to stream at 256 kbps.
- Want only a music service and do not value ad-free YouTube video.
Premium versus YouTube Music Premium and Premium Lite
YouTube Premium is the full video-plus-music package. It is the relevant choice for ad-free access across ordinary YouTube videos, background playback, downloads and YouTube Music Premium benefits.

YouTube Music Premium is aimed at music-first users who want ad-free music, background listening, downloads and YouTube’s music catalogue without necessarily subscribing to full ad-free YouTube video.
Premium Lite is a more limited tier and should not be treated as an equivalent replacement when music benefits, background playback or full Premium features are the goal. YouTube describes the differences in its Premium Lite update.
Plan availability, eligibility and prices vary by country, billing route and plan type. YouTube offers individual, student, annual and some multi-person plans in selected markets. Check the official checkout page for the current offer instead of relying on an old quoted price. Family plans and two-person plans also have household and regional rules; see YouTube’s plan information.

Other account and subscription checks
If you purchased Premium through Google One or another bundle, check your Google Account memberships before subscribing again. Bundles and add-ons can create duplicate subscriptions. YouTube’s guidance is available at this support page.
