Yes—with a qualification. YouTube Music’s progressive web app (PWA) became substantially more useful for desktop listening in 2024, chiefly because offline downloads began rolling out and the app gained better listening-session persistence and cross-device queue continuity. Its redesigned player and album pages also made it easier to use in a desktop window. But these changes did not turn it into a native Windows or Mac application, nor did they bring it to full mobile-app parity.
What “YouTube Music PWA” means
YouTube Music at music.youtube.com is a website. In a compatible browser, you can install it as a web app so it opens in its own window and can appear in your computer’s app launcher. The installed PWA is still the web service running through a browser; it is not a separately engineered native desktop client.
That distinction matters. A PWA offers a convenient standalone window, works across desktop platforms, and receives changes through the web experience. But it still depends on browser support, browser storage and account access. Google did not provide an official native Windows or macOS YouTube Music client in the evidence reviewed here.

The changes that made 2024 different

The biggest practical gain: offline downloads
Before web downloads, the desktop experience had a basic limitation: a browser player was useful only while it could stream. The 2024 rollout offered a way to download supported music for offline playback, making the PWA more viable for a flight, a train journey, an unreliable connection or a limited data plan. Downloads appeared in a dedicated area with categories such as playlists, podcasts, songs and albums.
Availability should be checked in the account you intend to use. The rollout reporting does not establish that downloads are available for every account, country, browser or piece of content. Offline downloads are associated with YouTube Music Premium or YouTube Premium benefits, but early reports described the subscription requirement cautiously. Check the current prompt and eligibility shown by YouTube for your account rather than assuming the same access everywhere. Google’s membership benefits information and Premium signup page are the appropriate places to confirm current plan details; prices and plan availability can vary by location and eligibility.

To check whether the feature is available, sign in, open an album, playlist or supported podcast page, and look for a Download control. Then check the Downloads area in the navigation. If you plan to rely on it, test playback with the computer offline before you leave a reliable connection. A download is not the same as owning an ordinary audio file: availability remains subject to the service, account authorization, licensing and browser storage. Clearing site data or using cleanup software may remove local downloads, and the service may require periodic online verification.

Persistence improved, but “resume” has limits
Remembering the last song or podcast episode made the PWA feel more like a persistent desktop application: after reopening it, users could get back to what they had been hearing without starting from scratch. Later queue continuity made it easier to pick up a queue or “Playing from” context associated with mobile listening.

Those changes should not be mistaken for reliable restoration of every detail. Remembering which item was playing is different from remembering its exact timestamp. The 2024 reporting supports item resumption more clearly than precise playback-position restoration. Queue behavior can also depend on which device started playback, what type of item was playing, whether the app was reloaded and whether the rollout is active for the account. Treat continuity as a meaningful improvement, not a guarantee of seamless, bidirectional synchronization.
The redesigned screens: useful polish, not new capabilities
The March Now Playing redesign brought the desktop presentation closer to the Android and iOS player. Its value was most apparent when the app window was narrow or tall: the player felt less like a page squeezed into a browser and more like a purpose-built listening view. That is a real usability improvement, but mostly a visual and interaction change.

The June redesign addressed a different part of the experience. Albums and playlists adopted a two-column layout, with prominent controls for actions such as play or pause, download, saving to the library, sharing and opening the overflow menu. This helps people who browse and manage collections more than people who simply search for one track and press play.

- No official native desktop client. Installing the PWA gives YouTube Music its own window, not full native integration.
- Not full mobile parity. The web app still had reported gaps, including less consistent lyrics availability and queue behavior.
- Remembering an item is not necessarily restoring its position. A reopened song or episode may not continue at the precise point where playback stopped.
- Rollouts and downloads can vary. Account, region, browser support, storage and content eligibility may affect what appears or works.
- Offline does not mean independent of the service. Downloads may be tied to account authorization and browser storage rather than available as permanent local files.
Reports of missing live lyrics for many songs describe a coverage and parity problem, not proof that lyrics are entirely absent on the web. Likewise, reports of inconsistent queue behavior are user experiences, not controlled tests of every account or setup. The overall conclusion remains that the PWA moved closer to the mobile apps, not that it matched them feature for feature.

Should you use the PWA or a third-party desktop client?

The open-source YouTube Music Desktop App is one such alternative. Its project page listed version 2.0.11, dated February 12, 2026, when reviewed. It is not affiliated with Google. Consider it only if its added desktop integration matters enough to justify third-party maintenance and account-safety considerations. The PWA is the simpler choice if official access and following the live web interface matter more than extra operating-system controls.
Install YouTube Music as a Chrome web app
- Open Chrome and go to music.youtube.com.
- Open the three-dot menu and look under Save and share for Install page as app (wording and placement can vary).
- Choose the installation control and confirm.
Google documents this process in its Chrome web-app installation help. If the install option is absent, some Chrome interfaces provide a fallback: open More tools → Create shortcut, name the shortcut, and enable Open as window if that option appears. See Google’s shortcut instructions. Other browsers may provide their own installation controls, but menu names and supported behavior differ.
If downloads or continuity are missing
- No Download button: confirm you are signed in to the intended account and check its Premium eligibility; update the browser; try the regular site in a fresh browser profile; and check whether the particular content is eligible. A feature rollout may not have reached every account.
- Offline playback fails: test before travel, check available storage and browser site-data settings, and avoid clearing site data if you need existing downloads. Downloads remain tied to YouTube’s service and account rules.
- The song returns but not its position: this is consistent with the difference between remembering the last item and restoring its exact timestamp.
- The queue is different: check which device initiated playback and whether the web app was reloaded. Queue continuity was an improvement, not a promise that every queue synchronizes perfectly.
Reinstalling the PWA is unlikely to solve an account-level rollout or content-eligibility issue. Before deleting browser data, confirm that you can access the account and redownload anything you need.
Verdict
By the end of 2024, YouTube Music’s PWA was meaningfully better as a desktop listening tool. Downloads addressed its most consequential limitation, while remembered listening context and queue continuity reduced the friction of returning to a session or switching devices. The redesigned player and collection pages made the web app more coherent, especially in a standalone window.
The improvement was significant in core usability—not a transformation into a native app. Users who need precise playback restoration, dependable lyrics coverage or deeper operating-system integration may still find gaps. For people who want an official, cross-platform desktop route to YouTube Music, the PWA became a much more convincing option in 2024, as long as they understand its browser and account-dependent limits.
