This was a historical outage, not a current alert. On January 24, 2023, YouTube Music experienced a partial, widespread service disruption across Android, iOS and the web. Home, Explore and Library content disappeared or failed to load for some users, while regular YouTube and YouTube TV were reported to be working normally. TeamYouTube later said the Music Home page should be back to normal.
What happened to YouTube Music?
Problems were observed at about 1:30 p.m. Pacific Time on January 24, 2023, according to contemporaneous reporting. The report was published at 1:54 p.m. PT. The disruption affected YouTube Music on Android, iOS and the web, but it was partial: different features failed in different ways, and not every user necessarily saw every symptom.

The incident was reported across multiple platforms, but the available reporting does not establish that every country or account was affected. It is more accurate to call it a widespread partial outage than a confirmed global outage.

The 429 message was an observed error, not an explanation of the cause. The available public updates did not say that rate limiting—or any other specific technical issue—caused the outage.

Was music playback completely down?
No. The report said some tracks that appeared in the service could still stream, even when their details were missing. During recovery, users could also listen to content already available from the Downloads page. That does not mean streaming worked for everyone or that downloads were an unrestricted fallback.
Google’s current download guidance says YouTube Music Premium members can download music, videos and podcasts for offline listening; downloaded content generally requires an internet reconnection at least once every 30 days. Existing downloads may therefore help during a disruption, subject to the account and service requirements.

YouTube Music was affected, not all of YouTube
The contemporaneous report said regular YouTube and YouTube TV were unaffected, including music playback on YouTube.com. A problem in YouTube Music should not be read as evidence that the broader YouTube service was down.

About an hour after the initial report, Explore and Library began returning, while Home remained unavailable. Roughly five hours after the initial report, TeamYouTube said the Music Home page should be back to normal. The TeamYouTube update was a social-media recovery message, not a detailed technical postmortem.

The incident was reported fixed the same day. The updates do not provide an exact restoration time for every feature, region or account, so they should not be taken to mean that all listeners recovered simultaneously.
If YouTube Music is acting up: outage or device issue?
These checks can help distinguish a service-side disruption from a problem limited to one device. They are general troubleshooting guidance, not evidence that users could repair the January 2023 outage themselves.

- Compare platforms: Try YouTube Music on the web and on a mobile device. If the same sections fail in both places, a broader service problem is more plausible than a fault in one app installation.
- Compare services: If regular YouTube works but YouTube Music does not, that points to a Music-specific problem, as happened in this incident.
- Check the connection: If available, try Wi-Fi and mobile data. A fault that follows only one network may be local to that connection.
- Try low-risk refreshes: Close and reopen the app, check for updates, and restart the device. Google’s current troubleshooting guidance also covers connectivity and app-cache checks.
- On Android, clear only the cache: Open App info for YouTube Music, go to Storage & cache, tap Clear cache, close the app from recent apps and reopen it. Menu names can differ by Android version or device maker.
Clearing cache may refresh stale local data; it cannot fix a server-side failure. The cache step was a narrow workaround suggested for users whose Home feed remained blank, not a proven fix for the underlying outage. The report gave no equivalent incident-specific iOS repair procedure. Closing and reopening the app, checking for an update and waiting for service recovery are reasonable general steps on iPhone or iPad.
If several platforms show the same failure, waiting for service recovery is more sensible than deleting the app, clearing all app data or reinstalling it. Those more disruptive steps were not identified as necessary in the incident report.

What is known—and what was not disclosed
The public account established the affected platforms, the kinds of features that failed, a staged recovery and a TeamYouTube acknowledgement. It did not provide a root cause, user count, error-rate data, country-by-country scope or a precise time when every affected account recovered. The 429 message alone does not fill those gaps.
