It is available on Android and iPhone/iPad, but rollout remains uneven: your account, region, device and app installation may determine whether the switch appears.
What Consistent volume does
Recordings made in different eras and mastered for different formats can have very different perceived loudness. A quiet acoustic track followed by a heavily mastered pop song may force you to reach for the phone, car stereo or headphone controls.
Consistent volume is YouTube Music’s volume-normalization control. It attempts to make adjacent tracks feel more similar in loudness, reducing abrupt changes during playlists, mixes and radio playback. Google has not published a target loudness value, measurement standard or detailed description of the processing, so it should not be understood as a guarantee that every song will play at exactly the same level.
How it differs from YouTube’s “Stable volume”
The main YouTube app uses a control called Stable volume to reduce jarring changes between videos. YouTube Music uses the separate label Consistent volume for the comparable music-listening goal.

They are controls in different apps, and Google has not documented enough technical detail to say that their underlying processing is identical. In the initial rollout, YouTube Music placed its control in app settings rather than exposing it in the player in the same way as the main YouTube control. How to turn it on or off
Android
- Open the YouTube Music app.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Open Playback.
- Toggle Consistent volume.
iPhone and iPad
- Open YouTube Music.
- Tap your profile picture.
- Select Settings.
- Open Playback & restrictions.
- Toggle Consistent volume.
Labels or menu placement can change in later app builds. If the option is absent, the account may not have received the rollout.

Why you may not see the setting
This was introduced as a gradual rollout, not a confirmed universal launch. The April 2025 report found the option on some iOS installations and only some Android installations. iOS version 8.15 and Android version 8.15.51 were reported sightings, not official minimum-version requirements. Later community discussions through 2025 and 2026 continued to show users both finding and missing the switch, including cases where it disappeared.
Update the app, but do not assume an update alone will activate the feature: uneven availability is consistent with server-side or account-level enablement. The initial report did not observe Consistent volume in the web player, and current desktop support has not been established. Mobile availability therefore should not be generalized to YouTube Music on the web.

Does it require YouTube Music Premium?
There is no clear public eligibility statement proving that Consistent volume is Premium-only. Some Google Help Community discussions are categorized under YouTube Music Premium, but that classification does not establish a paywall. Treat Premium eligibility as unconfirmed until Google publishes a definitive requirement. A related community discussion is available at Google’s YouTube Music Help Community.
Will every song become equally loud?
No. Normalization aims to reduce large track-to-track differences; it does not promise identical playback levels. A quiet acoustic recording may still sound quieter than a densely mastered pop track.

Do not confuse this setting with an adjustable compressor. Google has not published technical documentation showing that Consistent volume changes the quiet-to-loud contrast inside each song, nor has it disclosed an exact algorithm. Musical dynamics and mastering differences can remain audible.

Some listeners report reduced impact, lower perceived loudness or a toggle that does not switch cleanly. Those are anecdotal reports, not evidence that the feature universally damages audio quality or removes dynamic range. Your phone, Bluetooth receiver, car stereo, headphone app, equalizer and operating-system audio controls can also change what you hear. In some setups, separate normalization systems may stack.

If Consistent volume is missing or seems ineffective
When the switch is missing
- Check the exact mobile menu for your platform.
- Update YouTube Music through the official App Store or Google Play store.
- Force-close and reopen the app.
- If it appeared before and vanished, sign out and back in.
- Check again after a later app update or rollout period.
- Use Profile picture > Help & feedback > Send feedback to report the missing or malfunctioning control. This is Google’s reporting route, not a guaranteed fix. See the documented community guidance at Google Help Community.
When the switch is present but you hear no difference
- Compare two tracks with an obvious loudness contrast and let playback advance to the next track; some user reports describe delayed or inconsistent toggle behavior.
- Temporarily disable other equalizers, volume boosters, hearing-safety limits and headphone-app processing.
- Check the phone, Bluetooth device and car stereo for their own loudness or dynamic-processing settings.

The Bottom Line
Turn on Consistent volume if track-to-track jumps interrupt your listening, especially in cars or mixed playlists. Leave it off if preserving each recording’s original presentation matters more. If the control is missing, updating the app may help, but rollout and account eligibility remain the most likely explanations.
