YouTube Music’s major song-discovery upgrade is not merely “about to” arrive. As of August 18, 2026, Ask Music is available in supported markets, allowing eligible users to describe the music they want in ordinary language and receive a personalized mix or radio-style listening experience.
Instead of searching for a specific song, album, or artist, you can ask for something like “melancholic indie for a rainy evening” or “upbeat electronic music for a 45-minute workout.” You can also refine the result with follow-up prompts. The feature requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, is currently documented as mobile-only, and is limited by country and language.
What is Ask Music?
Ask Music is YouTube Music’s natural-language, generative-AI discovery tool. It uses a large language model to interpret a request and generate a customized listening experience, including a title, description, and related metadata. The result is designed to help you discover music based on an intention, mood, activity, or context rather than a precise search term.

- “Warm acoustic songs for a quiet Sunday morning.”
- “Energetic electronic music for a workout, but avoid vocals.”
- “Deep cuts from artists similar to Radiohead.”
- “Modern R&B with the atmosphere of a 1990s slow jam.”
- “Upbeat indie rock for driving, mostly new discoveries with a few familiar songs.”
YouTube describes the output as a custom mix or radio experience. It is closer to an adaptive listening session than a conventional playlist assembled track by track, so you should not assume that every prompt automatically creates a permanent saved playlist.

Google’s documentation also warns that quality and accuracy can vary. Ask Music interprets your wording; it does not execute every phrase as a strict, deterministic filter.

Why this changes song discovery
It starts with an experience, not a song
Traditional music search works best when you already know what you want to hear. You enter an artist, title, album, or genre and choose from the results. Ask Music is aimed at the more common situation in which you know the atmosphere but not the name of the playlist that would create it.
“Music for cooking dinner with friends” contains more useful context than simply selecting “pop.” The same is true of “late-night city-drive music,” “instrumental tracks for focused work,” or “melodic alternative rock without aggressive metal.”
It can combine several preferences
A single request can combine mood, era, genre, energy level, activity, reference artists, and the balance between familiar songs and new discoveries. Conventional mood shelves and genre buttons do not always expose those combinations directly.

It supports refinement
Ask Music is not limited to one request. Depending on the interface and account, you may see suggestion chips or be able to issue follow-up prompts such as:
- “Make it less mainstream.”
- “Add more female vocalists.”
- “Keep the mood but increase the energy.”
- “Use these artists as a starting point and introduce newer acts.”
- “Remove the most familiar songs.”
This conversational refinement is the feature’s most important distinction from a basic AI playlist generator. You can correct the direction instead of abandoning the session as soon as the first few recommendations miss the mood.
How to use Ask Music
From the Home tab
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app.
- Go to Home.
- Look for “What are you in the mood for?”
- Tap “Ask any way you like.”
- Enter a text request or use voice input.
- Start the generated mix.
From Search
- Open YouTube Music and go to the Search page.
- Tap the Ask or voice entry point near the upper-right area.
- Describe the music you want.
- If a customized mix appears as a top result, look for the “Mix created by AI” label.
- Tap Play and refine the result using the available suggestions or follow-up prompts.
Labels and button locations can vary by app version, device, language, and rollout state. Google’s help page is the controlling reference if the interface changes.
How to write better prompts
Ask Music requests are examples of intent, not guaranteed command syntax. The more useful details you provide, the clearer your starting point is likely to be.

To reduce generic results, name one or two reference artists, specify an era, and explain whether you want recognizable songs or unfamiliar artists. If the system ignores part of the request, simplify it or apply the missing preference as a second prompt.

Availability: who can use it?
According to Google’s current documentation, Ask Music is available to YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium members in supported locations. The help page lists mobile devices, English or Spanish, and the following markets:

This is not a universal free-tier or desktop-web feature according to the cited documentation. Availability can also depend on the account, app version, device, app language, and gradual rollout conditions. The absence of an Ask Music button does not necessarily mean the feature is permanently unavailable to your account.
Ask Music is one component of the broader Premium offering, not a separately priced product. Pricing varies by country, plan, taxes, and promotions, so check the live YouTube Premium signup page for local terms before subscribing.
Ask Music in Search is related, but different
YouTube Music has also been placing Ask Music-generated radios prominently in search results. A result may appear near the top of Search with an “Mix created by AI” label.
Separately, Google announced in July 2026 that users can connect YouTube Music to AI Mode in Google Search and use Search to curate playlists. That is an adjacent Google Search integration, not the same as using Ask Music inside the YouTube Music app. Details are available in Google’s connected-apps announcement.

What Ask Music does not promise
It does not prove that recommendations are better
Google documents how the feature works, but the available material does not provide a measured improvement over YouTube Music’s existing recommendations. It would be inaccurate to claim that Ask Music fixes the algorithm, finds objectively better songs, or beats competing services.
It does not provide complete control
Ask Music can interpret a request such as “mostly artists I have not heard before,” but that should be treated as a preference rather than an absolute rule. The documented feature does not establish controls for excluding every previously played song, setting an exact duration, guaranteeing a precise track order, or enforcing every genre boundary.
Its generated text is not human editorial judgment
The title and description can make a mix easier to understand, but they are AI-generated metadata. They should not be treated as authoritative genre classifications or as the equivalent of a human-curated recommendation.
It can misunderstand ambiguous requests
YouTube warns that quality and accuracy may vary, and safeguards may block some prompts or outputs. If a mix misses the point, try a shorter prompt with a clear reference artist, mood, or activity, then refine it gradually.

Google also says personal data is not used to create the title, description, and metadata for pre-generated customized mixes appearing in Search. That statement should not be expanded into a claim that all personalization across YouTube Music ignores listening history or account context.

Ask Music compared with existing discovery tools

Ask Music is most useful when you know the kind of experience you want but do not know where to begin. A conventional radio station or fixed playlist remains preferable when you need predictable playback, precise track control, or reliable offline listening.
Troubleshooting common problems
The feature does not appear
Check that you are using the mobile app, that your account has YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, and that your country and app language are supported. Update the app and check both Home and Search. An update may be necessary, but Google does not promise that updating alone will unlock Ask Music.
The mix is too generic
Add a reference artist, era, activity, and novelty preference. For example: “Mostly lesser-known artists similar to Radiohead, with atmospheric alternative rock for late-night listening.” You can also ask for “deeper cuts,” “emerging artists,” or “avoid the biggest hits,” while recognizing that these are not guaranteed exclusions.

Ask for “mostly artists I have not listened to,” “avoid the biggest hits,” or “use my reference artists only as a starting point.” The system may still include familiar tracks, because these phrases express goals rather than documented hard filters.
The result ignores part of the request
Separate the requirements. Start with the central mood or activity, then use a follow-up prompt to adjust energy, era, vocals, familiarity, or genre. This is often clearer than putting many competing constraints into one sentence.
The mix includes unsuitable content
Skip or remove individual tracks using YouTube Music’s existing controls where available, and use the service’s content settings. Ask Music’s safeguards may block some sensitive prompts or outputs, but the documentation does not promise perfect filtering of every unwanted song.
The bottom line
YouTube Music’s big discovery upgrade is already here in supported markets: Ask Music lets you replace a precise search with a description of what you feel like hearing. Its strengths are low-friction discovery, combined preferences, and conversational refinement. Its limitations are equally important: Premium membership, mobile and regional restrictions, variable accuracy, incomplete control, and no verified guarantee of better recommendations.
