Yes—YouTube Music offers both Sound Search, which can identify a song from a tune you hum or sing, and Ask Music, which creates a radio-style mix from a text or voice request. They are different tools, not a single new feature: Google’s humming-based search dates back to 2020, while Ask Music is a newer conversational discovery experience. Ask Music currently requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium and is limited to supported mobile devices, countries, and languages.
Two different ways to find something to listen to
Sound Search is for the song you already have in mind but cannot name. It listens to a melody played, sung, or hummed into your phone and looks for a matching existing track in YouTube Music. It does not compose a new song. Google documents the feature in its Sound Search instructions.
Ask Music starts with the opposite problem: you want something to listen to, but have not picked a track. Describe a mood, activity, genre, artist combination, or podcast topic, and the app builds a personalized selection. You can then steer it with follow-up prompts or suggested options. Google calls the feature Ask Music; “conversational radio” is a useful description, not its official product name.
How to identify a song by humming in YouTube Music
- Allow YouTube Music to use your device’s microphone.
- Open the YouTube Music mobile app and tap the search icon in the upper-right corner.
- Tap the Sound Search icon.
- Play, sing, or hum the tune you want to identify.
- Choose a result to play it or save it. If no useful match appears, try again.
You do not need the original recording. The point is to search from the melody itself. Google introduced humming-based song identification in Search in 2020, so the capability is not wholly new to Google; the current instructions describe its use inside YouTube Music. The app’s controls and availability can still vary by account or region.

If the match is wrong or nothing comes up, check microphone access, move somewhere quieter, and hum the most distinctive part of the song without speaking over it. A chorus is often more useful than a short or repetitive instrumental fragment. Similar melodies can produce similar matches, and the result may be a cover, remix, live version, or related recording rather than the exact version you remember. A track that is not in YouTube Music’s searchable catalog may not appear at all. Retry, search any remembered lyrics or artist details, or use Google’s broader hum-to-search option as another route.
Google’s public Sound Search instructions do not list Premium as a requirement. That is different from Ask Music’s stated eligibility: do not assume every account in every country will see Sound Search, but there is no documented Premium prerequisite for this search tool.

How Ask Music turns a request into a mix
- Open YouTube Music on a supported mobile device.
- Find the What are you in the mood for? section.
- Tap Ask any way you like.
- Type a request or use voice input, then start the resulting mix.
- Use suggestion chips or send a follow-up prompt to refine what plays next.
Requests can cover music or podcasts. For example, try “upbeat indie songs for a morning run,” “relaxing piano music for reading,” “90s alternative rock with female vocalists,” or “technology podcasts for beginners.” Ask Music interprets what you describe and selects material from the service’s catalog; it is not necessarily generating new audio or building a live broadcast.

That makes it different from a conventional station seeded by a song, artist, album, playlist, or your listening history. Ask Music begins with natural language and lets you adjust the result through the same interaction. A result may be labeled Mix created by AI, but that label does not mean the tracks themselves were composed by AI. Nor should “radio” be taken to mean a live station or a narrated host.

Write prompts that give the mix direction
A vague request such as “good music” leaves the system little to work with. Add details that explain the listening situation and sound you want:
- Mood and activity: “calm songs for studying” or “high-energy music for a run.”
- Genre and era: “90s alternative rock” or “modern acoustic folk.”
- Artists: Name two or three reference artists if you have them.
- Language or vocals: Ask for a language, instrumental tracks, or a particular vocal style.
- Boundaries: Specify “no ballads,” “instrumental only,” or other exclusions that matter to you.
If the selection is close but not right, refine it rather than starting over: ask for less familiar artists, more acoustic tracks, a slower tempo, or a narrower era. Broad or conflicting instructions can produce an unfocused result; niche scenes may be less well represented, and recommendations may lean toward artists you already know. Treat AI-generated mix names and descriptions as recommendations, not as editorially verified claims. If you find a track you want to keep, save it to your library rather than assuming a generated mix will remain identical.

Who can use Ask Music?
Google’s current help page lists Ask Music for YouTube Premium and YouTube Music Premium members on mobile devices only. It lists English- and Spanish-language support in the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico, and Latin American countries excluding Brazil. This is a current published availability list, not a guarantee that every eligible account will receive the feature at the same time.
If Ask Music is missing, check whether you are signed in to an eligible Premium account, using the mobile app, in a listed country, and using English or Spanish as the app language. An outdated app, staged rollout, or supervised or restricted account may also affect what appears. YouTube Music says experiences can vary by country and account type; its availability and account guidance is a useful reference. A missing button does not by itself prove something is broken.

Ask Music versus an AI DJ
Ask Music is best understood as prompt-driven discovery: tell it what you want, then refine the mix. Spotify’s AI DJ is generally positioned as a personalized listening feed with spoken introductions and transitions. Someone who wants a specific blend of mood, activity, and genre may prefer Ask Music’s request-first approach; someone who wants a more host-led presentation may prefer an AI-DJ-style experience. They are not interchangeable products, and features, markets, and subscription terms can change independently.
YouTube has also described a separate AI music-host experiment through YouTube Labs. That experiment adds spoken stories, fan trivia, and commentary around music. Ask Music creates or refines a mix from a listener’s request; an AI host provides commentary while music plays. Do not mistake one for the other.
Does Premium make sense for these features?
If you only want to identify a tune, Sound Search alone is not a reason to subscribe: Google’s public instructions do not state that it requires Premium. Ask Music is different; Google lists it as a Premium-member feature. YouTube Music Premium also includes ad-free music, background play, downloads, and audio-only playback, although podcast ads or creator promotions may still appear. YouTube Premium includes a YouTube Music Premium subscription, so it may make more sense if you also want benefits for watching YouTube. If you mainly want music and Ask Music, YouTube Music Premium is the more directly relevant plan. Check the live signup page for current pricing and local terms; they vary by market.
Verdict
Sound Search is a practical way to turn a remembered melody into a search, while Ask Music makes discovery more conversational by turning a description into a customizable mix. They solve different problems, and neither guarantees a perfect result. For existing Premium subscribers in a supported market, Ask Music adds another way to find music or podcasts. For everyone else, eligibility—not the headline—is the key limitation. The two features may make YouTube Music more useful, but they do not make a subscription worthwhile for every listener on their own.
