YouTube Music rolled out a redesigned album and playlist interface on the web on June 20, 2024. The main desktop view places artwork and metadata in a left column and the track list in a right column, making better use of wide screens. It is primarily a layout and usability update—not a new catalog, playlist system, or Premium-only feature.
What changed in YouTube Music’s web interface?
The redesign changed how album and playlist detail pages are organized at music.youtube.com. Instead of stacking the artwork, information, controls, and songs vertically, the desktop presentation separates them into two main areas.
- Left column: artwork, title, artist or creator information, metadata, description, and action controls.
- Right column: the album or playlist’s track list.
The result is a denser layout that lets desktop users see information about the release while also viewing more songs without scrolling past a large header section. The design resembles the album and playlist treatment previously used on Android tablets.

The page also uses a blurred background derived from the artwork. That background is decorative and may look different depending on the release image.

What information and controls are shown?
For albums, the redesigned information panel can include the title, artist or band, release date, track count, total duration, and a description. The reported layout also included an expandable description sourced from Wikipedia. Those descriptions may be missing, incomplete, or outdated; they should not be interpreted as editorial text written or verified by YouTube Music.
The action area includes the familiar controls for:
- Playing or pausing the album or playlist
- Downloading, where the account and content support downloads
- Saving the release to the library
- Sharing
- Opening additional actions through the more or overflow menu
These controls were reorganized within the new page rather than introduced as a new music-management system. The June 2024 reporting did not establish a new download policy, audio-quality tier, catalog, playlist-editing model, or sharing system.
Albums and playlists receive the same general treatment
The redesign applies to both album pages and playlist pages. Playlists use the same broad desktop structure—artwork and details alongside the songs—but their metadata can differ. Unlike albums, playlists may show creator, description, or update information rather than standardized release-date and album-duration details.

That means two pages can look similar while displaying different information. A missing release date or different description on a playlist is not necessarily evidence that the redesign failed to load.
The two-column view is responsive
The interface does not remain in two columns at every window size. At narrower widths, YouTube Music can switch to a single-column layout:
- Artwork appears near the top of the page.
- Album or playlist details and controls follow.
- The track list appears below.
Browser zoom, operating-system display scaling, and the width of the browser window can all affect which layout appears. A user on a smaller laptop window may therefore see a single-column page even when the redesigned interface is available on the account.

The rollout was handled through the web service rather than a documented user-selectable setting. It was reported as a broad or gradual rollout, so not every account necessarily received the same interface at the same time.

If an album or playlist still shows the older layout:
- Open music.youtube.com and sign in to the relevant Google account.
- Open an album or playlist and reload the page.
- If you use the installed YouTube Music web app, close the PWA window completely and reopen it.
- Try the same page in a normal browser tab.
- Widen the browser window and test at 100% browser zoom.
- Try a current version of Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or Safari.
Clearing cached data may refresh stale assets, but it is not a guaranteed fix. Server-side rollout rules, account experiments, responsive breakpoints, or later interface changes can still determine what appears.
What the redesign does—and does not—change

Its main benefit is improved information density and clearer separation between release details and songs. Its main limitation is that it may feel less familiar to users accustomed to the older vertical page, and the blurred artwork background may add visual noise for people who prefer a plain interface.

The redesigned page itself was reported as a web-interface change, not a Premium-only feature. A reader interested only in the new album and playlist layout should not assume that a subscription is required.

Premium status does affect certain controls and playback capabilities. According to Google’s YouTube Music help documentation, Premium benefits include ad-free music, background playback, audio-only playback, and music downloads. Google’s download guidance states that downloaded music requires YouTube Music Premium and that downloads generally require an internet reconnection at least once every 30 days. Podcasts can have separate download rules.
In other words, a download icon appearing on a redesigned page does not necessarily mean that every account can use offline music. The interface and the account’s membership rights are separate issues.

Yes. The installable YouTube Music progressive web app uses the same web service and can display the redesigned album and playlist pages. Google explains how to install YouTube Music as a web app in its support documentation.
A PWA can retain an older page session, so closing and reopening its window was the practical refresh step reported during the rollout. If the PWA still shows the old presentation, compare it with the same account in a regular browser tab.

Availability today
The redesign was reported on June 20, 2024. YouTube Music’s web interface may have evolved since then, and Google can change labels, control placement, breakpoints, or page components through later updates and staged experiments. Screenshots from the original rollout should therefore be treated as dated examples rather than a permanent specification.
If two users see different layouts, that can reflect window width, browser zoom, account-level rollout, regional or server-side testing, cached sessions, or subsequent changes to YouTube Music—not necessarily a problem with either account.
Is Premium worth considering for this change?
Premium is relevant if you also want the associated playback benefits, such as ad-free listening, background playback, offline downloads, audio-only playback, or supported web casting. Google documents YouTube Music web casting and Premium benefits through its official help pages.

However, the redesign alone is not a strong reason to subscribe. Pricing and available plans vary by country, billing channel, plan type, promotions, and account. Check the official YouTube Premium signup page for current local details. YouTube Premium may be a better fit for people who also want ad-free viewing across regular YouTube; someone interested only in the album-page layout may not need either subscription.
Bottom line
YouTube Music’s June 2024 web redesign made album and playlist pages more suitable for desktop screens by placing release details and tracks side by side. It improves scanning and reduces unnecessary vertical scrolling, while remaining responsive enough to collapse into a single column at narrower widths. The update is best understood as an evolutionary interface refresh: useful for desktop listeners, but not a major change to YouTube Music’s catalog, playlist tools, or subscription rules.
