1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYouTube Music’s changing Now Playing screen is a real redesign rollout, not usually a phone glitch. Since the September 2025 test, Google has moved playback controls, Lyrics, Related, Up Next and the Song/Video switcher through several layouts. The exact screen depends on your account, device, app version and rollout cohort. By April 2026, a split-view design was reported as widely rolling out on Android 9.14 and iOS 9.15, but YouTube Music still did not guarantee an identical interface for every user.
What changed in the September 2025 YouTube Music redesign?
The September 2025 version changed the hierarchy of the Now Playing screen. The main playback controls—play/pause, previous, next, shuffle and repeat—moved directly below the song title and artist. The progress control became thicker and more box-like, expanding while you interacted with it.

The familiar bottom destinations were also reworked. In the reported test layout, the dedicated Up Next, Lyrics and Related row disappeared. Related tracks could be opened by tapping the song-title row or its nearby arrow, while Lyrics moved into a horizontally scrollable action carousel. Like, dislike, comments, Save, download and sharing were consolidated into that carousel. The Song/Video switcher was moved or visually deemphasized, depending on the variant reported by users.
These changes were not delivered as one universal screen. Users could receive different combinations of the changes at the same time.

The September 11, 2025 coverage describes the dual-pane redesign and its control changes: 9to5Google. Android Authority separately documented the relocated controls and Lyrics carousel: Android Authority.
Why users describe it as A/B testing
The rollout behaved like a server-side A/B test: different users reported different arrangements, some saw a design and later lost it, and new variants appeared over subsequent months. That pattern is more consistent with account or cohort assignment than with a single broken app build.
Google has not publicly supplied an experiment name, cohort sizes, start date or an official opt-in switch for this exact sequence. It is therefore more accurate to say the rollout appears to be an A/B test based on observed account differences than to present “A/B test” as a formally announced Google label. December 2025 coverage described more than a year of continuing Now Playing experimentation: 9to5Google’s December report.
What the redesign changes in everyday use
Muscle memory is disrupted
People who opened Up Next, Lyrics or Related from the old bottom tabs must learn new tap targets or gestures. A familiar action can require searching a carousel or opening the title row instead.

Discovery can take more steps
When Related is no longer a labeled tab, its presence is less obvious. Lyrics may be present but hidden off-screen in a horizontal action row. Song/Video switching can also take longer when the control is moved away from its former position.
There may be usability gains
A compact action row can leave more visual emphasis for album art and core playback. Integrating Up Next into a lower split view may make the queue easier to see without abandoning the player. Those are plausible design benefits, not published Google explanations.
One-handed use varies
Reachability depends on phone size, grip and whether the queue is collapsed, partially open or full-screen. A larger scrubber may make seeking easier, while a carousel can hide actions from anyone who does not realize it scrolls. The available reports do not establish formal accessibility testing, so questions about screen-reader labels, landscape mode, tablets, foldables and Android Auto remain open.
Was the changing screen a bug?
Probably not. Structured movement of the same controls across users, versions and dates points to staged experimentation or rollout. Playback failures, buffering and playlists failing to advance were also reported around the period, but the available coverage does not prove that the interface test caused those problems. A misplaced button and a network or licensing failure should be diagnosed separately. The contemporaneous report from PiunikaWeb is available at PiunikaWeb.

How the Now Playing design evolved
- November 2024: Reporting indicated that testing of a major Now Playing redesign had begun.
- September 11–12, 2025: A dual-pane layout and rearranged controls were reported rolling out on Android and iOS.
- Late 2025: Additional variants changed the Song/Video switcher, Lyrics, Related, the scrubber and the action carousel.
- December 20, 2025: Coverage suggested Google might be converging on icon-based Song/Video controls, while Lyrics and Related remained different from the old tab arrangement.
- April 23, 2026: A split-view Now Playing design was reported as widely rolling out on Android 9.14 and iOS 9.15: 9to5Google.
What users were likely seeing by August 18, 2026
The April 2026 split-view design is the latest broadly reported milestone, not a guarantee that every account had the same screen by August 18. In that newer layout, the Song/Video switcher used icons, Lyrics appeared after the thumbs-up and thumbs-down controls, Up Next occupied the lower portion of the split view, and Related remained available from the song-title row.
Android version 9.14 and iOS version 9.15 were the versions identified in the April report. The Android app continued receiving updates—the Google Play listing showed an update date of July 8, 2026—but that listing does not document the Now Playing cohort assigned to every account: Google Play.
Two phones on the same app version can still show different screens because delivery may depend on account, operating system, region, subscription status and server-side rollout stage.
How to find familiar controls
Related is missing
Tap the song title or the nearby chevron/arrow. In September 2025 and later variants, that row commonly replaced the dedicated Related tab, although the exact affordance varies by version.

Lyrics is missing
Swipe the secondary action row horizontally. Lyrics may sit beside rating, Save, download or sharing controls. Availability can also depend on the song, market, account and current access policy, so no layout guarantees Lyrics for every track.
Song/Video switching is missing
Look near the top for labeled or icon-based Song and Video buttons, then check the action row if they are absent. Switching exists only where a corresponding music video is matched to the song. YouTube describes the feature here: YouTube’s announcement.
Up Next is missing
Swipe upward on the player or open the lower queue area. The gesture and the amount of queue visible can differ when the queue is collapsed, half-open or expanded.

There is no reliable, officially documented setting that lets users choose the old or new Now Playing design. Updating the app may be necessary for a rollout, but it is not sufficient when assignment is server-side.

- Check Google Play or the App Store for a YouTube Music update.
- Force-close YouTube Music and reopen it.
- Sign out and back in if the account appears stuck in a broken state.
- On Android, clear the app cache before considering a full data reset.
- Use YouTube Music’s in-app feedback tool and include your device, operating system, app version, account type and a screen recording.
These steps can clear a display glitch but cannot reliably opt you into or out of an experiment. The April 2026 report noted that force-stopping the app and dismissing the queue could trigger the new look for some users; that was an observed trigger, not a user-controlled switch. Avoid modified clients and unofficial APKs because they add security, account and compatibility risks.
Do not confuse the layout test with Lyrics restrictions
Where Lyrics appears is a user-interface question. Whether a free account can view Lyrics is a separate access-policy question. February 2026 reporting linked Lyrics access to Premium for some users, with market, account, song and rollout qualifications: 9to5Google. That development does not show that the Now Playing redesign caused a restriction.
YouTube Music Premium and YouTube Premium are the relevant paid plans for ad-free use, background playback and downloads, with availability varying by market and plan. YouTube also describes Premium access to experimental YouTube features: YouTube’s January 2025 announcement. Current U.S. pricing is not established here, so a price should not be inferred.
What remains uncertain
- Google has not published a formal name, cohort count or guaranteed schedule for this Now Playing experiment.
- “Widely rolling out” does not mean every region, device or account had the same screen by August 18, 2026.
- The split-view design may continue to change; broad rollout is not proof that it is the final permanent layout.
- The available reports do not establish a causal link between UI changes and playback failures.
- Formal accessibility results for car displays, tablets, foldables, landscape mode and screen readers have not been published in the cited coverage.
The Bottom Line
YouTube Music’s Now Playing controls really have been rearranged through a prolonged, cohort-based rollout. Treat any screenshot as version- and account-specific: tap the title for Related, swipe the action row for Lyrics and other controls, and look for icon-based Song/Video buttons in the newer split view. Updating or reinstalling may fix a glitch, but it cannot reliably control a server-side assignment.
