Why Is Hulu So Dark on My TV? Fixes and Solutions

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Hulu usually does not have a single brightness control that makes every program darker. The most common cause is your TV switching from its normal SDR picture profile to a separate HDR10 or Dolby Vision profile when playback starts. Other possibilities include Eco dimming, a title mastered very dark, an incorrect streaming-device output, an HDMI or HDCP problem, an app failure, or a failing backlight.

Start with this test: play the same Hulu title on another device or compare Hulu with another streaming service. While the dark scene is on screen, open the TV’s picture menu and check whether it reports HDR, HDR10, HLG, or Dolby Vision. If the image returns to normal when the active HDR profile is corrected or dynamic-range switching is disabled, the issue is probably display processing rather than your Hulu subscription.

First, identify what is actually dark

Menus bright, program dark

This pattern points to HDR/Dolby Vision switching, a separate picture profile, incorrect tone mapping, or a title-specific grade. A TV can show a bright SDR interface and then apply different settings as soon as video begins.

Menus, thumbnails, and programs all dark

Check the TV’s Eco, power-saving, ambient-light, automatic-brightness, picture-mode, and firmware settings. If every input and app remains dim, hardware becomes more likely.

Only one show or movie is dark

Night scenes and low-key cinematography may be intentional. A title-specific encoding or HDR metadata problem is also possible. Do not change the whole TV for one program until you compare other titles and devices.

The two-minute diagnostic

  1. Play a different Hulu title.
  2. Open another streaming service on the same TV.
  3. During the dark image, open picture settings and note whether the TV has entered HDR10, HLG, or Dolby Vision mode.
  4. Temporarily disable Eco, Energy Saving, ambient-light sensing, automatic brightness, AI/Adaptive Picture, and dynamic or contrast-enhancer features.
  5. Compare Hulu’s built-in app with an external player, or connect the player directly to the TV.

Interpret the results this way: Hulu alone being dark suggests an app, title, or Hulu-triggered format issue; every app being dark suggests TV settings, firmware, or hardware; one HDMI device being dark points to its output mode, cable, input, or an intermediary such as an AVR or soundbar.

Why the picture changes when Hulu starts

SDR (Standard Dynamic Range), HDR10, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision are different video formats. HDR10 uses static metadata, while HDR10+ and Dolby Vision can use dynamic metadata. Compatible TVs commonly store separate brightness, gamma, tone-mapping, and picture-mode values for each format.

Therefore, raising the ordinary SDR “Brightness” control may do nothing while HDR video is playing. Adjust the profile that is active at that moment. Depending on the TV, the useful controls may be Backlight or Panel Brightness, OLED Light, Peak Brightness, HDR Tone Mapping, Gamma, Shadow Detail, Black Level, Local Dimming, or a Dolby Vision mode such as Dolby Vision Bright.

HDR is not inherently supposed to look dim. A mismatch between the player’s output and the TV’s tone mapping, or a poorly configured HDR profile, can make it appear that way. Roku’s guidance notes that HDR can fail or look poor when the input is not configured for HDR, software is outdated, or the HDMI path lacks the required capability (Roku 4K/HDR setup; Roku HDR connection guide).

Fix the TV’s active picture profile

Disable automatic dimming for a test

Search the TV menus for Eco Mode, Energy Saving, Power Saving, Ambient Light Detection, Light Sensor, Automatic Brightness, AI Brightness, Intelligent Mode, Adaptive Picture, Contrast Enhancer, or Dynamic Contrast. Turn them off temporarily. If the image improves, re-enable only features that do not produce unwanted dimming.

Choose an accurate but usable mode

For testing, try Movie, Cinema, Filmmaker, Standard, HDR Cinema, or Dolby Vision Bright (where available). Vivid or Dynamic mode may look brighter, but it can clip highlights, distort color, exaggerate sharpening, and use more power; it is not a reliable repair.

Change the right control

Increase Backlight, OLED Light, or Peak Brightness before raising Black Level. Increasing black level too far turns blacks gray and washes out the image. Gamma or Shadow Detail can reveal dark areas, but excessive changes reduce contrast and fidelity. TVs may save settings separately for internal apps, each HDMI input, SDR, HDR, and Dolby Vision, so make the adjustment while Hulu is actively playing in the affected format.

Some controls are unavailable in streaming apps. Samsung documents that picture options can be grayed out while using apps such as Hulu; that alone does not indicate a broken TV (Samsung troubleshooting guidance).

Restart and update Hulu

  1. Stop playback and reopen the title.
  2. Force-close Hulu.
  3. Restart the TV or streaming device completely rather than merely putting it to sleep.
  4. Update Hulu.
  5. Install available TV or streaming-device firmware updates.
  6. Sign out of Hulu and sign back in.
  7. Remove and reinstall Hulu if the platform supports it.
  8. Test another title, another app, and the same title on another device.

If all Hulu titles are dark on one device but other apps are normal, suspect that app, device, or its output format. If Hulu is dark everywhere while other services are normal, report the reproducible title/device combination through the Hulu Help Center.

Roku troubleshooting

Use automatic display detection

On an external Roku player, open Settings > Display type > Automatic. Dolby Vision and 4K HDR require compatible hardware and an HDMI path that supports them. Roku’s Dolby Vision troubleshooting is at this guide.

Check the HDMI mode and TV input

On Roku TV, the path is generally Home > Settings > Inputs > select the HDMI input > HDMI mode. Try Auto first. If advanced formats fail, Roku documents Standard as an option for newer 4K HDR-capable devices, although labels vary by model.

Enable the manufacturer’s HDR input setting when required. Examples include Samsung Settings > General > External Device Manager > HDMI UHD Color > On; LG All Settings > Picture > Additional Settings > HDMI Ultra HD Deep Color > On; Sony Settings > Channels & Inputs > External inputs > HDMI signal format > Enhanced mode; and Vizio Input Settings > select input > Full UHD Color > On. These are examples, not universal paths.

Test Dolby Vision and gaming features

If Roku is forcing Dolby Vision for everything, test an automatic or non-forced mode. This can avoid a problematic Dolby Vision profile, but it also changes the intended format. On some LG televisions, Roku says FreeSync can interfere with Dolby Vision; the model-dependent example is Home > HDMI > Settings > Advanced > Picture > Additional Settings > FreeSync > Off.

  • 4K SDR with Match Dynamic Range on.
  • 4K SDR with Match Dynamic Range off.
  • 4K HDR.
  • Dolby Vision, if supported by the TV.

If Hulu darkens only when matching activates HDR or Dolby Vision, recalibrate that active profile or use the output mode your TV handles correctly. Turning off Match Dynamic Range is a diagnostic workaround, not a universal best setting: it may improve consistency while preventing native HDR or Dolby Vision from being shown.

Check the HDMI chain

  1. Connect the streamer directly to the TV.
  2. Temporarily bypass a soundbar, AV receiver, HDMI switch, capture device, or splitter.
  3. Try another HDMI input, especially one labeled for 4K or Enhanced video.
  4. Use the cable supplied with the streamer or a certified Premium High Speed HDMI cable for 4K/HDR setups.
  5. Confirm that the TV input and every intermediary support the required HDR format and HDCP version.
  6. Restart the entire chain after changing HDMI settings.

Roku notes that many 4K paths require HDMI 2.0 capability and HDCP 2.2, and recommends Premium High Speed HDMI for 4K/HDR (4K setup requirements; Roku TV requirements). Hulu explains how unsupported displays, devices, or cables can limit output through HDCP (Hulu HDCP explanation). A bad cable more often causes dropouts, sparkles, or a failed HDR handshake than a steady dark picture, so replace it after isolating the rest of the chain.

When the program is supposed to look dark

A legitimate dark presentation can come from nighttime cinematography, shadow detail graded close to black, HDR mastered for a brighter reference display, or a room that is much brighter than the viewing environment used for calibration. Compare several Hulu titles and the same title on another device. If only one program is affected while other apps and titles look normal, report the title to Hulu instead of permanently lifting the TV’s blacks.

Test for a TV hardware problem

  • Open the TV’s own menus and a bright built-in test image.
  • Switch to another HDMI input and another app.
  • Compare the internal Hulu app with an external player.
  • Check whether the whole screen is dim or only video playback.
  • Look for a failing backlight, uneven illumination, flicker, or persistent dimness after a power cycle.

If menus, every app, every input, and bright test images are dim, contact the TV manufacturer for model-specific diagnostics. Do not buy a new streamer or TV until cross-app, cross-device, HDR-mode, and direct-HDMI tests identify where the fault follows.

What to tell Hulu support

Provide the title and episode, TV make and model, playback device and generation, Hulu app version if visible, country and Hulu edition, whether HDR or Dolby Vision appeared, and which other titles or services were tested. Include whether the problem remains after a direct HDMI connection and a full restart. The Hulu Help Center provides support options.
