YouTube Music’s Ask Music is an existing AI-powered discovery feature, not a new 2026 launch. Google first made it more visible in the Android app in February 2025, then began surfacing Ask Music radios prominently in search results. It can turn a natural-language request into a personalized music mix or help find podcasts—but it is currently limited to eligible Premium members using the mobile app in supported countries and languages.
What Ask Music does
Ask Music lets you describe what you want to hear in ordinary language and receive a personalized radio or mix. You can specify a mood, activity, genre, artist, creator, or podcast topic. Google says recommendations can combine discoveries with artists or shows you already like. It is a recommendation tool, not a system for composing original songs.
For example, you might ask for “warm, mellow music for a rainy afternoon,” “upbeat songs for a cardio workout,” or “indie pop similar to [artist].” Podcast prompts can be just as specific: “intellectual technology podcasts” or “pop-culture podcasts for a long drive.”

The February 19, 2025 update was a visibility push, not the debut of Ask Music. Contemporary reporting described a larger Ask Music carousel on the Android Home tab, including an “Ask any way you like” prompt that opened the conversational interface (9to5Google’s February 2025 report).

The feature’s placement continued to evolve. In a September 22, 2025 feature roundup, YouTube Music said Ask Music radios were appearing prominently among search results, giving the feature a place in the app’s regular search-and-discovery flow (YouTube Music Community update). Google’s current Help page describes Ask Music as a discovery experience for both music and podcasts. Taken together, these changes make it easier to encounter Ask Music; they do not show that Google is replacing ordinary search.
Where to find Ask Music
On a supported mobile account, Google’s documented Home-screen route is:
- Open the YouTube Music app and go to Home.
- Look for “What are you in the mood for?”
- Tap “Ask any way you like.”
- Type a request or use voice input, then submit it to generate a mix or recommendations.
You may also see Ask Music radios near the top of search results after searching within YouTube Music. Placement can vary by account and rollout, so not seeing that entry point does not necessarily mean the app is broken.

How to get a better result
Give the system a listening context rather than a single broad label. If “jazz” is too generic, add an activity, vocal preference, mood, or reference artist. For example, build toward: “Modern vocal jazz for cooking, mostly upbeat, with artists similar to Laufey and Norah Jones.” You can also say whether you want familiar songs, new discoveries, instrumental music, or vocals.
For podcasts, include the subject and format you want—for instance, “30-minute technology podcasts explaining practical AI tools, not daily news.” The interface may offer suggestion chips or follow-up prompts for podcast recommendations. Google does not promise that every prompt supports the same refinements or controls.
Ask Music creates a radio or mix experience rather than necessarily making a permanent, hand-editable playlist. For podcast recommendations, Google says you can save recommended episodes to a Saved podcasts playlist and save shows to your Library. Previous mixes may be available in your Library or from the player page of a song included in a previous mix.

Who can use it?
According to Google’s current Ask Music Help page, eligibility requires:
- Membership: YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium.
- Device: A mobile device; the current documentation does not list desktop support.
- App language: English or Spanish.
- Location: The United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico, and Latin American countries other than Brazil.
These are Google’s documented availability conditions, not a guarantee that the feature will appear immediately for every qualifying account. AI features can be rolled out progressively and availability can change. If you subscribe mainly to get Ask Music, bear that uncertainty in mind; a membership does not guarantee immediate access.
Ask Music compared with other ways to discover audio

YouTube Music’s Samples feature presents short music-video segments and lets listeners save songs, share them, explore full videos, and find related videos. It is a different discovery route—not another way to submit a natural-language request.

Privacy and limitations
Google says, “Your personal data is not used for this purpose” on its Ask Music Help page. That statement is specifically about this feature’s stated purpose; it should not be read as saying that YouTube Music never personalizes recommendations using account activity. Google separately explains that listening and viewing history can inform broader recommendations (YouTube Music personalization help).
Google also warns that Ask Music’s quality and accuracy may vary. A vague prompt can yield a generic mix, a detailed request may miss some of its adjectives, and results may lean toward familiar artists instead of unfamiliar discoveries. Repeating a prompt may not produce an identical set of results. Google says it uses safeguards against inappropriate content and may block prompts or outputs that violate policies or involve sensitive topics.

If Ask Music is missing or the mix is off
If you cannot find the feature, check that you are signed into the intended Google account, have YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, are using the mobile app, have English or Spanish selected as the app language, and are in a listed country. Update and restart the app, then check Home again. These steps can rule out common issues, but they cannot force access if Google has not enabled it for your account; reinstalling is not a guaranteed fix.

If a result misses the mark, start a new prompt with more detail: add an activity, genre or era, one or two reference artists, the desired energy, and whether you want familiar tracks or discoveries. If the interface offers follow-up refinement, use it; otherwise, state exclusions explicitly in a fresh request. Do not assume a formal “exclude artist” control is available in every version.
Is Ask Music worth trying?
Ask Music is most useful when you know the occasion or atmosphere but not which songs to queue, or when you want podcast recommendations by subject rather than show name. It is a weaker choice when you need a specific track, a predictable sequence, or fine-grained manual playlist control—in those cases, standard search or an existing playlist is more direct.
Because Google currently lists Premium membership as a requirement, whether it is worth trying also depends on what else you want from the subscription. YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused route; YouTube Premium includes YouTube Music benefits as well as benefits for regular YouTube. Choose the broader plan only if you value those YouTube benefits too, and check the live signup flow for current plan details. Neither plan guarantees Ask Music access in an account or region where it has not yet been enabled.
