YouTube Music’s redesigned icon set was broadly rolled out across Android, iPhone and iPad, and the web by October 23, 2025. The update is a visual refresh rather than a new playback or subscription feature. Its most conspicuous change is the Now Playing thumbs-up and thumbs-down artwork, which 9to5Google described as unusually cartoon-like because of the elongated thumb and visible knuckles.
What changed in YouTube Music
The older thin, sharp-edged symbols have been replaced in many parts of the app with thicker, rounder and more detailed forms. 9to5Google documented the changes in its October 1, 2025 report, later updated on October 23.
Navigation and global controls
- The Home icon is more descriptive.
- Samples uses visibly heavier lines instead of the previous thin outline.
- Explore and Library receive bolder, more detailed symbols.
- The notification bell is redrawn.
- The Search icon has a shorter handle.
Now Playing controls
- The downward chevron, Cast symbol and overflow-menu dots are updated.
- Play/pause and previous/next controls use a rounder treatment.
- Shuffle is heavier and more prominent.
- Repeat receives one of the largest visual changes.
- The comments icon is substantially redrawn.
- The thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons now show an articulated hand with an elongated thumb and three visible knuckles.
Menus and the web player
- The overflow menu’s album icon is redesigned.
- The Sleep timer symbol is more circular and may be harder to interpret at a glance.
- The Pin to Speed dial icon is tilted.
- On the web player, the volume icon also changes, although its new shape can look abstract.
Why the thumbs icons attract attention
Most interface glyphs communicate through simple silhouettes. The new reaction buttons instead depict a noticeably illustrated hand. That extra detail makes them feel closer to an animation or cartoon than a conventional utility icon, and their style can seem slightly out of step with the rest of the rounded redesign.
This is a description of what users and the reporting observed, not a documented Google design rationale. No official explanation in the cited coverage says that the hand illustration was intended to improve recommendations, accessibility or engagement.

The confirmed scope is YouTube Music on Android, iOS and the web. Similar symbols were reportedly spotted in the main YouTube app, but that observation should not be treated as proof that the main app received the same confirmed rollout.
Devices or accounts can still show mixed visuals during distribution, and platform timing may differ. The reporting does not provide a minimum Android or iOS version, nor does it establish that every region or account sees an identical presentation.
How to check for the new icons
- Close YouTube Music completely and reopen it.
- Check the Home, Samples, Explore and Library tabs.
- Open a track’s Now Playing screen and inspect the reaction and playback controls.
- At music.youtube.com, reload the page and check the player controls.
- If the old set remains, install any pending YouTube Music update from your device’s app store and check again.
Force-stopping YouTube Music was suggested by the original report as a possible way to surface the change. It is not documented here as a guaranteed Google procedure. Clearing app data, reinstalling, changing accounts or subscribing to Premium is not established as necessary.
What the redesign does not change
The available reporting identifies an iconography and design-system update. It does not establish changes to the meaning of likes or dislikes, playback behavior, recommendation logic, Premium eligibility or subscription benefits. The visual refresh is available independently of YouTube Music’s paid tier.

YouTube Music continues to offer an ad-supported experience. Premium adds benefits such as ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback and downloads, according to YouTube’s help page; those benefits are separate from the icon update. Why the refresh may feel better—or stranger
Potential improvements
- Heavier forms may be easier to spot quickly.
- Rounded styling creates more visual consistency between navigation and playback controls.
- More descriptive silhouettes may help new or infrequent users recognize destinations.
Possible drawbacks
- Added detail can make some symbols less immediately recognizable.
- The circular Sleep timer icon may be ambiguous.
- The illustrated thumbs can feel stylistically inconsistent with the otherwise functional controls.
- Thicker artwork alone does not prove an accessibility improvement; contrast, size, legibility and platform scaling still matter.
