YouTube Music’s 10th-anniversary announcement, published on August 21, 2025, is less a wholesale redesign than a push to make the service more social and more useful to fans. YouTube highlighted Taste Match playlists, comments on albums and playlists, Bandsintown-powered concert discovery, artist notifications, fan badges and prompts tied to music-video view milestones. The rollout is uneven: some features were described as introduced, while others were announced for a forthcoming or expanding release.
What YouTube announced on August 21, 2025
YouTube framed the anniversary as “10 years of fandom,” emphasizing the relationship between listeners, artists, videos and live events rather than a new audio format or subscription tier. The company says YouTube Music now contains more than 300 million tracks, including official recordings, remixes, live performances and covers; that is a YouTube-reported figure, not an independently audited comparison with rival catalog counts. How each feature changes the service
Taste Match turns listening history into shared discovery
Taste Match is designed around overlapping listening habits. People join a shared playlist, and YouTube says it is automatically refreshed each day using the tastes of everyone participating. That makes it different from a conventional collaborative queue in which members manually add tracks.
YouTube’s announcement does not establish a complete walkthrough, participant limit, privacy model or web-versus-mobile availability. It also does not describe Taste Match as a real-time synchronized queue. If the option is missing, check for an updated app and remember that rollout timing can differ by account and country.

Comments bring discussion to albums and playlists
YouTube said comments on albums and playlists would arrive soon. The idea moves YouTube Music beyond one-way playback by allowing listeners to discuss a collection in context. The announcement does not say whether comments will be global, whether they apply equally to user-created and official playlists, or whether moderation will exactly match ordinary YouTube video comments, so treat this as announced or rolling out rather than universally available.
Bandsintown adds concert discovery, not ticket selling
YouTube announced an exclusive partnership with Bandsintown to show upcoming concerts in more places, including artist pages and Official Artist Channels, music videos, Shorts and other artist touchpoints. The practical flow is discovery: seeing dates and nearby events and then following a link to an event or ticketing page. It should not be read as YouTube becoming the ticket seller.
Listings can be incomplete. Coverage depends on Bandsintown’s data, the artist-page setup, location information, local event coverage and whether a show has been correctly matched to the artist. A missing listing is not proof that no concert exists.
Release, merchandise and event notifications
The anniversary update expands artist-following beyond new songs to merchandise and newly announced event dates. To manage categories in the current app, use:

- Choose Settings.
- Choose Notifications.
- Turn individual categories on or off.
Labels can vary by platform and app version. Artist follows, YouTube Music’s own notification setting and your phone’s operating-system permission all matter; disabling any one of them can prevent an alert. Fan badges make engagement visible
First to Watch recognizes especially early viewers of an official music video, while Top Listener reflects unusually high engagement with an artist. Thresholds are personalized and can vary by release, artist and account. “Top Listener” is relative to other listeners, so ordinary repeat listening does not guarantee it.
These are recognition features, not financial rewards. YouTube has not promised ticket priority, exclusive access, monetization or a universal public badge history. The announcement also does not establish whether every user can display or export badges outside YouTube. A listener could qualify for different badges, but eligibility is determined by YouTube’s own, changing rules.
View-milestone prompts encourage fan campaigns
YouTube said it may highlight official videos nearing milestones such as 100,000, 1 million and 1 billion views and invite fans to help reach the next number. This is a prompt for coordinated fan engagement, not a new chart or certification system. It does not replace Billboard, RIAA, BRIT or other external measurements, and YouTube has not specified how close a video must be before a prompt appears.

What is actually new—and what is not
The anniversary package is primarily about community, artist-fan relationships, live-event discovery and visible fandom. It is not presented as a new codec, a major player redesign, a new subscription tier or an independently verified catalog expansion. Playback fundamentals remain the familiar YouTube Music experience.
That focus differentiates YouTube Music from services whose signature social products are more retrospective or playlist-centered, such as Spotify Wrapped, Blend or Apple Music Replay. The comparison is functional rather than a claim that one service is universally better: YouTube is connecting listening with videos, Shorts, artist channels and concerts.
Who can use the features?
The anniversary post does not assign a Premium requirement to Taste Match, comments, concert listings, notifications, badges or milestone prompts. Therefore, availability should be checked in the current app instead of assuming that a paid membership unlocks every item.
Free users can listen with advertising. YouTube Music Premium adds ad-free music, background play, audio-only playback and offline downloads. Podcast advertising can still appear for Premium members, and creator-embedded promotions may remain. Existing YouTube Premium subscribers already receive YouTube Music Premium benefits. Separate pricing is country- and account-dependent; check YouTube Music’s signup page rather than relying on a universal dollar figure.

Ask Music is related, but not an anniversary feature
Ask Music shows YouTube’s parallel move toward natural-language discovery, but it was documented separately from the 10th-anniversary fandom announcement. On supported accounts, describe a mood, activity or genre and the service generates a personalized mix; it can also help discover podcasts.
Current eligibility requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium. It is mobile-only, requires the app language to be English or Spanish, and is listed for the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, Mexico and Latin American countries other than Brazil. YouTube says quality and accuracy may vary and that safeguards can block prompts or outputs. The documented path is:
- Open YouTube Music on a supported phone.
- Go to Home.
- Find What are you in the mood for?
- Tap Ask any way you like.
- Type or speak a request and play the generated mix.
A customized mix may also appear at the top of Search. Labels and availability can change by country, language, account and rollout stage. Details are in the official Ask Music help page.

YouTube Music has an in-app transfer tool for playlists, albums, artists and tracks. It imports a snapshot; it does not create an ongoing two-way sync.

- Open YouTube Music and tap your profile icon.
- Choose Settings.
- Choose Privacy & data.
- Tap Transfer playlists from other apps.
- Tap Let’s start and authorize the other service.
- Select playlists and tap Transfer to YouTube Music.
- Original playlists remain on the old service.
- Later edits do not synchronize automatically.
- Some tracks may not match or may resolve to a different version.
- Podcasts cannot be imported or exported through this process.
YouTube also names TuneMyMusic and Soundiiz as third-party options, but does not guarantee their quality or handle disputes with them. Review account permissions before authorizing any outside service. Full limitations are in Google’s playlist-transfer instructions.
Why a feature may be missing
- The feature is still rolling out or limited to a particular country.
- Your account, membership, device type or app version is not eligible.
- You are using desktop or web for a feature currently limited to mobile.
- YouTube Music or your phone has notifications disabled.
- An artist, concert or release has incomplete metadata.
Check the app update, account status, country, device and both levels of notification permission before concluding that YouTube removed a feature.
Is the 10th-anniversary update worth switching for?
It is most meaningful for people who follow many artists, attend concerts, enjoy videos and live versions, or want discovery tied to fandom. The combination of official tracks, remixes, covers, live recordings and user-generated material is a genuine strength, although it can also create duplicate versions, inconsistent metadata and confusing search results.
The case is weaker if your priority is an audio-only player with highly granular playlist management, guaranteed feature parity across every platform or transparent, independently measured catalog comparisons. Taste Match and Ask Music trade some manual control for easier discovery, while badges and shared listening can expose more about your habits depending on account settings.

A music-only listener should compare the live Music Premium price and benefits in their country; anniversary features alone are not a reliable reason to subscribe while several elements remain in rollout. Overall, YouTube Music is using its tenth year to reinforce an identity built around fans, video and artists—not simply to imitate an audio streaming catalog.
