The intended point was that one thin device could bring many tools together. Many viewers saw something else: a machine destroying the physical things through which people make and experience art. That clash between message and imagery made “Crush!” a conspicuous marketing failure in May 2024.
What happened in the “Crush!” commercial?
Released alongside the M4 iPad Pro in May 2024, the spot showed a large hydraulic press descending onto objects associated with creativity and entertainment: musical instruments, paint and brushes, cameras, books, a record player, sculptures and an arcade game. As the press compressed the collection, the iPad Pro appeared beneath it. Apple CEO Tim Cook also shared the commercial online. Axios reported on the launch and backlash; The Washington Post described the imagery and reaction.
The visual drew on the satisfying-object-crushing videos popular online. In product terms, it was a metaphor for consolidation: a tablet could bring functions associated with many separate tools into a compact device. Apple’s launch messaging emphasized the iPad Pro’s thinness, M4 chip and display. The commercial did not explicitly mention generative AI or say that artists should be replaced.
Why did viewers read it as hostile to creativity?
The objects were destroyed, not transformed
The spot did not show the objects being incorporated into new work or helping someone create. It showed them being crushed, followed by the reveal of a digital device. That sequence made “many tools in one” easy to read as “the old tools are gone.” For viewers who value tactile, physical practices, the press was not a neutral visual shorthand for efficiency; destruction was the ad’s central action.

The audience included the people represented by the objects
Apple was promoting a high-end tablet to people such as illustrators, musicians, photographers, designers and filmmakers. To those viewers, the instruments, cameras and books could stand for creative practice rather than obsolete clutter. The imagery therefore collided with the product’s implicit promise to empower creators.
AI anxiety supplied a charged backdrop
The commercial arrived amid debate about generative AI, automation, creative jobs and the use of artists’ work to train AI systems. Critics could see the press as a metaphor for technology compressing or displacing human labor even though the ad itself did not make that claim. AI was one lens on the backlash, not a complete explanation: objections to the destruction and to digitization existed independently of AI. Axios covered the AI-era context.

Corporate scale changed the tone
A powerful industrial press can feel playful in a viral video. In an advertisement from one of the world’s most powerful technology companies, the same image could suggest corporate dominance: a giant machine eliminates cultural objects, and the company’s device remains. Some criticism also focused on the apparent wastefulness of destroying objects to promote a thin product. The commercial alone does not establish whether usable instruments or original artworks were destroyed, so claims about the physical props should not be treated as fact.
Why did the comparison with Apple’s “1984” ad matter?
Commentators contrasted “Crush!” with Apple’s famous 1984 Macintosh commercial, which positioned the company against conformity and impersonal control. In the newer spot, critics argued, Apple looked less like the rebel challenging the machine and more like the force wielding one against culture. That reversal sharpened the sense that the ad contradicted Apple’s creative-empowerment identity. It is an interpretation of the symbolism, not an official explanation from Apple. Marketing Dive explored the comparison.

Who criticized the ad?
Contemporary coverage reported objections from prominent figures and creative communities. Actor Hugh Grant characterized the spot as a destruction of human experience; director Reed Morano criticized its tone; and Basecamp CTO David Heinemeier Hansson said it symbolized what people dislike about digitization. Artists, designers and musicians also described it as dystopian, anti-art or tone-deaf. These visible reactions show a substantial online backlash, not a survey proving that every artist, Apple customer or viewer opposed the commercial. MacRumors summarized prominent criticism and Apple’s response.
What did Apple say, and what changed?
Apple marketing executive Tor Myhren told Ad Age that creativity was central to the company and that its intention was to celebrate how people express themselves and bring ideas to life with iPad. He acknowledged that the video “missed the mark” and apologized. The response conceded a failure of execution rather than arguing that critics had misunderstood the intended message.

After the backlash, Apple reportedly abandoned plans to run the spot on television. Contemporary reports said it remained available online at the time; that does not establish its availability today. The change concerned advertising distribution, not the iPad Pro launch: the device was not recalled, and the controversy was not about a product defect. Macworld reported on the apology and television plans; Marketing Dive also covered the distribution decision.

The strongest defense is that the ad used an exaggerated visual metaphor: one portable device can perform functions that once required multiple tools. Its supporters could see the press as a way to dramatize synthesis, not an argument against art or artists. The strongest criticism is that the execution made destruction—not creative work on the iPad—the spectacle, then presented the device as what remained.

Both readings are plausible because the commercial relied on symbolism rather than demonstrations of particular workflows. The criticism does not establish that the M4 iPad Pro is technically poor or that Apple intended to replace artists. It shows that the visual metaphor was a poor fit for a creator-focused brand promise: capability became erasure, and efficiency looked like technological replacement.
What the controversy revealed about technology advertising
- A metaphor can overpower a product claim. Viewers remember what the machine did to the objects, not just what the tablet could consolidate.
- Creator audiences are alert to replacement narratives. In a period of anxiety about automation and creative work, an image of technology crushing creative tools carries more weight than a conventional feature list.
- Brand history can intensify a misstep. Apple’s old anti-conformity image gave critics a powerful contrast for a commercial that seemed to make Apple the impersonal force.
- Attention is not persuasion. The ad became a prominent controversy, but there is no basis here to claim it caused a measurable sales decline or lasting damage to Apple’s brand.
“Crush!” was therefore best understood as an advertising and cultural-reception failure, not a verdict on the iPad itself. The product was meant to represent creative capability; the commercial’s most memorable image suggested that creativity’s physical tools had to be destroyed for technology to win.
