Yes—eligible YouTube Music subscribers can describe a mood, activity, genre, artist or listening scenario and get a tailored music mix. Google’s current Help documentation calls the in-app feature Ask Music and describes its result as a custom station or mix; February 2026 coverage called a related rollout AI Playlist. It requires YouTube Premium or YouTube Music Premium, works on mobile in supported markets, and is not documented as a conventional saved playlist in every case.
What YouTube Music’s AI playlist feature does
Ask Music turns a natural-language request into a customized listening experience. You can ask for music by mood, activity, genre, favorite creator or a more specific situation, using either text or voice. Google says the system interprets the request and creates a title and short description for the resulting mix. It recommends existing catalog music; it does not generate original songs.
The naming can be confusing. Google’s current Ask Music help page uses terms such as “custom station” and “customized mix.” Reports about the February 2026 Premium rollout used “AI Playlist.” Those descriptions point to prompt-based discovery, but they do not establish that every result is a permanent, editable playlist. Google’s public documentation does not specify a universal track count, editing controls, or whether every result is automatically saved. Check for save or add controls in your version of the app, and confirm the item appears in your Library before treating it as a lasting playlist.

How to make a prompt-based mix
- Open the YouTube Music app on a mobile device and sign in to an eligible account.
- Go to the Home tab and look for “What are you in the mood for?”
- Tap “Ask any way you like.”
- Type a request or use voice input, then start the resulting mix with its playback control.
- If the result misses the mark, try a more specific request. Use any save or add option shown if you want to keep it.
Google’s instructions for Ask Music allow requests about mood, activity, genre and creators. Voice can be convenient when your hands are busy, but typing is often a better choice for unfamiliar artist names, multiple exclusions or mixed-language prompts, where recognition can go wrong.

Prompts that give the system more to work with
A short prompt such as “good music” leaves the service little direction. Combine a context with a sound, energy level, familiarity preference or time span. For example:
- Workout: “Upbeat indie pop for a 30-minute morning run.”
- At home: “Warm acoustic songs for cooking dinner on a rainy evening.”
- Era and discovery: “90s alternative rock, mostly familiar hits with a few deep cuts.”
- Focus: “Instrumental electronic music for focused coding, no vocals.”
- Energy curve: “A relaxed mix that starts mellow and gradually becomes more energetic.”
- New discoveries: “Songs like my liked tracks, but less obvious and more adventurous.”
- Party: “Progressive house for a chill party, not aggressive club music.”
For tighter direction, specify several useful details in one request: “Make a 45-minute, mostly familiar indie-rock workout mix, medium-to-high energy, no live versions, with a few newer artists similar to The Strokes and Arctic Monkeys.” Treat exclusions as guidance rather than guarantees. The service may still misunderstand a constraint, choose an unexpected recording or produce an uneven sequence.

Google’s current eligibility page lists these requirements and limits:

- Device: Mobile devices; Google does not document this in-app feature as available on desktop.
- App language: English or Spanish.
- Listed locations: The United States, Australia, Canada, Ireland, Mexico, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Latin American countries other than Brazil.
Eligibility does not necessarily mean the feature will appear immediately. Google may stage access by account or app version, so availability can vary even for a subscriber in a listed country. The documentation does not establish availability on TV apps, smart speakers or every other YouTube Music client.
If the entry point is missing, check that you are signed into the account with the qualifying subscription, have the latest app version, use English or Spanish, and are on mobile in a listed market. Fully closing and reopening an updated app is a reasonable check, but it is not a guaranteed way to force access if your account has not received the rollout.
What to expect from the results—and what may go wrong
Google warns that quality and accuracy can vary and that safeguards may block some prompts or outputs. A result can be broadly right in mood but weak on a niche genre, an artist reference or a request such as “no vocals.” If it feels generic, restate the activity and desired sound, name a few reference artists, and clarify whether you want familiar songs or discoveries.

YouTube Music’s catalog includes more than standard studio audio. Depending on the request and catalog matches, a mix may include music videos, live versions, remixes or covers. If the recording matters, inspect the selections and replace versions you do not want; a prompt cannot be assumed to exclude every unwanted recording type.

Ask Music can also find podcasts
The feature is not limited to songs. Google says you can use natural-language prompts to discover podcast shows and episodes by topic, genre or mood. You can explore recommendation chips, save episodes to Saved podcasts or save shows to your Library, according to the official instructions.

Ask Music versus Google Search AI Mode
There is also a separate route outside the YouTube Music app. In a July 16, 2026 announcement, Google described connecting YouTube Music to AI Mode in Search: connect the app when prompted, ask AI Mode to curate a playlist, then save it to YouTube Music and start playback from the Search experience. That connected-app workflow is distinct from the in-app Ask Music interface. Do not assume its save behavior or availability is identical to Ask Music’s custom mix.
Is YouTube Music a better choice than Spotify?
Both services offer prompt-based playlist discovery, but a feature announcement alone is not evidence that one produces better recommendations. YouTube Music is especially convenient if you already pay for YouTube Premium or Music Premium, want music alongside YouTube, or value a catalog that includes videos and alternate recordings. That same catalog breadth can be a drawback if you want only a canonical studio track every time.

Spotify may suit listeners who care more about its playlist ecosystem, social features and cross-platform music use. Spotify has described its own Prompted Playlist feature in company materials, and it also has a free ad-supported tier; plans and prices vary by market and can change. See the live Spotify Premium page for current U.S. options rather than relying on an old price comparison. Apple Music is another broader streaming alternative for people who prioritize Apple-device integration, library management and lossless audio, though it is not the same prompt-based proposition described here.

For people who do not have Ask Music, YouTube Music’s regular search, radios, mixes, activity-oriented recommendations and manual playlists remain available. The AI feature adds a natural-language way to express what you want; it does not replace the rest of the service’s discovery tools.
Should you subscribe for it?
Ask Music is most compelling as an extra for someone who already uses YouTube Music or wants the broader benefits of a qualifying subscription. YouTube Music Premium is the music-focused option; YouTube Premium bundles YouTube benefits with YouTube Music. Compare the live plans for your market and billing route before subscribing, since prices and options can vary. If you mainly want a free prompt-based tool, desktop-first playlist management or precise control over every track and sequence, this feature alone is a weaker reason to pay.
