Neither Windows nor Linux is automatically cheaper for a 24/7 YouTube looping stream. The reliable answer comes from measuring each complete setup at the wall while it runs the same stream, then calculating energy use from average watts, hours, and your electricity rate. The available guidance does not establish a controlled Windows-versus-Linux winner.
How to compare a Windows PC and Linux server fairly
Compare the machines doing the same job, not their labels. A rack server is not necessarily lower-power than a desktop, and a server’s power-supply rating is not its actual consumption. Hardware, encoding workload, power settings, and peripherals all affect the result.
- Match the workload. Use the same video, resolution, frame rate, codec where possible, bitrate, and stream duration. Keep overlays and other stream processing consistent. YouTube publishes its current encoder recommendations by configuration in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions; use the entry for your intended output rather than treating one bitrate as universal.
- Measure the complete setup. Use a plug-in electricity meter at the wall, with the host and the same continuously powered peripherals included for both tests. Decide whether to include a monitor, external storage, network equipment, or UPS, and use the same measurement boundary on both systems. - Let each system reach its normal streaming state. Measure while the stream is actually running, not at startup or idle. If the draw fluctuates, record energy over a representative interval and divide by elapsed hours to obtain average watts. DOE’s Measuring Standby Power explains this time-averaging principle for fluctuating power; its standby procedures are not a certification method for a system continuously encoding video.
- Repeat and note conditions. Run each system separately under the same conditions. Record the meter’s energy reading, interval, output settings, content, peripherals included, and any unusual activity. A momentary watt reading can miss variation across the stream.
Calculate the electricity cost
Use average measured draw, not the wattage printed on the power supply:
- Energy in kWh = average power in watts Ă— hours Ă· 1,000.
- Energy charge = kWh Ă— your electricity price per kWh.
For a stream that runs continuously for 30 days, monthly energy is average watts Ă— 24 Ă— 30 Ă· 1,000. Multiply that figure by your actual tariff. The result estimates the energy charge; your bill may also include fixed fees, demand charges, taxes, or tiered rates.

For example, if your own meter shows an average of 100 W over a representative streaming interval, a 30-day continuous run uses 72 kWh. At a hypothetical rate of $0.20/kWh, the energy charge would be $14.40. Replace both figures with your measurement and local rate. DOE’s computer-purchasing guidance gives 11¢/kWh as an average price at U.S. federal facilities as of July 2024; that dated federal assumption is not a household tariff or a worldwide rate. Why the machines may differ
Hardware and configuration
CPU, GPU, power supply, motherboard, storage, and fans all contribute. The word “server” does not tell you a machine’s wall draw. A compact host may use less than a desktop, but its actual stream capability, reliability, and purchase cost still need to be considered.

Encoding and video content
Resolution, frame rate, codec, and whether the system uses software or hardware encoding change the work performed. A static image, moving footage, overlays, and other processing can also impose different loads. Measure the content and settings you intend to run; bitrate alone does not predict power use. YouTube’s encoder guidance describes supported output settings and recommends choosing quality that works with available upload bandwidth: encoder settings and bitrate recommendations.
Operating system and power management
Drivers, background services, power profiles, and idle behavior can vary between installations. Because the available sources do not provide a controlled comparison of Windows and Linux running the same looping stream, a difference between two machines cannot be attributed to the operating system unless hardware and workload are controlled. DOE recommends appropriate built-in power management, but test changes carefully: sleep or device power-down can interrupt an always-on stream.

Measurement boundary
A monitor left on, an external drive, network equipment, or UPS conversion losses can change whole-setup consumption. Include the equipment that will actually remain powered and state what your reading covers. DOE’s data-center guidance is useful for measurement principles, but it is not current consumer-server wattage evidence.
What the electricity comparison leaves out
A lower energy charge does not automatically mean lower total cost. Add any hardware purchase, maintenance, setup time, and monitoring needs; also consider what a stream interruption would mean and how quickly you can recover. A cloud subscription trades local electricity and hardware dependence for a service charge. YouTube’s encoder help page lists a cloud-based option for continuous streaming of pre-recorded video, but that listing does not establish its current price, service performance, or the provider’s total energy footprint: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.

For a documentary channel, continuous availability is only one concern. You still need rights to the footage, music, and other included material, and must follow YouTube’s current live-stream and monetization policies. Repeating a video does not itself establish that you have the necessary rights or qualify for monetization.

Troubleshooting an unexpected result
- The reading changes significantly during the test: Extend the measurement interval and use average watts derived from kWh and elapsed time. Check that the stream workload and background activity are comparable.
- The Linux machine appears cheaper but the setups differ: Match the video settings and peripherals, then repeat. Without controlling hardware and workload, the measurement compares those complete systems, not operating systems in isolation.
- The meter shows less than expected from a component’s rating: A power-supply rating is a capacity specification, not a wall-power measurement. Use the wall reading for the running system.
- The calculated monthly charge does not match the bill: Confirm the tariff and billing period, then account separately for fixed charges, demand charges, taxes, and tiered pricing. The calculation covers the energy component only.
- The stream stops after changing power settings: Check whether sleep or a device power-down policy took effect. Restore a setting that interrupts streaming and test power changes without leaving the channel unattended.
