First find out which OBS counter changes when the next playlist video starts. Open View → Stats: rising Dropped Frames (Network) points to the connection or bitrate; rising Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag points to local GPU or scene workload; rising Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag points to encoding workload. If none rises but viewers see stutter, investigate playback and delivery conditions before changing OBS settings. A playlist transition can coincide with a problem, but the available OBS documentation does not establish that switching videos itself causes network drops.
Identify what is actually dropping
In OBS, open View → Stats and watch the counters through a transition. Note whether the issue appears in OBS’s preview or recording, to viewers only, or both. An increasing network counter with a yellow or red connection indicator suggests the connection is unstable or cannot sustain the configured bitrate. OBS sends the outgoing connection directly to the streaming service, not through OBS-operated servers.
| What changes at the transition | What it indicates | First investigation |
|---|---|---|
| Dropped Frames (Network) | Frames are not reaching the remote ingest server reliably at the configured bitrate. | Stable upload capacity, bitrate, route, Wi-Fi and network interference. |
| Frames Missed Due to Rendering Lag | OBS cannot get composed frames off the GPU to the video encoder fast enough. | GPU load and scene complexity, including overlays and media sources. |
| Skipped Frames Due to Encoding Lag | The local encoding stage cannot keep up. | Encoder workload, output demands and the OBS log. |
| No OBS counter rises, but viewers report buffering | The symptom may be on the viewer’s playback or delivery path rather than an OBS frame-drop problem. | Viewer device, connection, location and stream playback conditions. |
These categories are distinct. The OBS Project’s status-indicator guide describes rendering lag as a GPU-to-encoder issue, not a network drop: Status indicators and what they mean. OBS’s Help Portal explains that it may discard frames to avoid buffering and keep a stream playing: OBS Help Portal.
If Dropped Frames (Network) rises
OBS defines network drops as a connection to the remote ingest server that is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. Its connection guide says, “It is extremely unlikely for OBS Studio to cause dropped frames,” referring to network dropped frames as the guide defines them. Work through connection causes before changing playlist settings.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Check bitrate against stable upload capacity. Reduce the video bitrate so it fits what the connection can sustain, while staying within YouTube’s applicable limits. OBS calls 75% of total upload speed a “good starting point,” not a guarantee of steady capacity.
- Test another available server or ingest route. If a different route is available in the streaming setup, compare it under the same conditions.
- Remove competing traffic and possible interference. Pause other uploads, and check whether VPN, security, network-optimization software, drivers, router or modem issues, or cabling are involved.
- If you stream over Wi-Fi, compare with Ethernet. OBS recommends a wired connection because Wi-Fi can be unstable. A cable helps only when wireless instability is plausible; it will not fix GPU rendering, encoding, playlist parsing or YouTube-side delivery.
- Use dynamic bitrate only as a fallback. It can lower bitrate during congestion, but OBS cautions that it does not fix the underlying cause and may reduce image quality.
If connection troubleshooting does not resolve persistent drops, OBS recommends contacting your ISP. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide.
If rendering lag rises
Rendering lag means OBS is having trouble composing frames locally, often because the GPU is near its limit or the scene contains many visual elements. A playlist transition may change what the scene is rendering, so isolate scene load rather than treating this counter as a connection fault.

- Watch GPU load around the transition and simplify the scene temporarily.
- Hide or remove overlays and other graphical or video sources one at a time, then repeat the same transition.
- Compare the counter before and after each change. Keep the change only if it reduces rendering lag without creating another issue.
OBS’s status guide discusses limiting game GPU load, but that advice is specific to game workloads and may not apply to a documentary playlist scene. Its broader advice to check GPU pressure and overlays is relevant: OBS status indicators guide.
If encoding lag rises
Encoding lag is a local encoding-stage problem, separate from sending frames over the network. Reduce encoding workload or output demands in controlled increments, then inspect the OBS log for encoder-specific clues. There is no universal encoder, preset or hardware change that can be recommended without the log and the stream’s settings. Avoid changing several output settings at once; otherwise it becomes difficult to tell what helped.

Check the playlist source and transition behavior
OBS documents VLC Video as the source type that supports playlists. It includes settings such as Loop Playlist, Shuffle Playlist, Visibility Behaviour and Network caching (ms). Confirm that VLC is installed and matches OBS’s architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for the installed-version labels.
If the playlist is built from ordinary Media Source items instead, test these settings individually:

- Restart playback when source becomes active: check whether activation behavior is contributing to the transition.
- Use hardware decoding when available: this applies only to certain file types when compatible GPU decoding is available; it is not a guaranteed fix.
- Close file when inactive: enabling it can free memory but may cause a short delay while a file reloads when the source becomes active again. Disabling it avoids that reload but retains more memory.
- Show nothing when playback ends: check the end-of-file behavior if the stutter occurs at a clip’s end rather than only when a new source becomes visible.
These are documented source behaviors, not confirmed remedies for every transition problem. For more on source setup, see the OBS Sources Guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If OBS counters stay clear but viewers see stutter
Do not assume OBS is dropping frames when its Stats counters remain steady. Viewer buffering can occur because people use different devices and networks, or because of the stream’s platform delivery and playback conditions. Ask whether the problem affects one viewer or several, and compare the viewers’ locations, devices and connections. Stay within YouTube’s applicable streaming recommendations; a viewer-side playback problem is not fixed by lowering OBS encoding load without evidence that OBS is the source.

Run a controlled transition test
Once you have recorded which counter changes, compare transitions while changing only one variable at a time. A short local recording or private/unlisted test stream can help isolate the effect without relying on a public broadcast. This is a diagnostic approach, not a test result for your setup.
- Record the source type, relevant source settings and the counter values before the transition.
- Repeat the same playlist transition in a local recording or private/unlisted test stream.
- Change one setting or scene element, then repeat the same transition.
- Compare Stats and review the OBS log. If network drops persist after the connection checks, pursue the network route or ISP; if rendering or encoding counters rise, stay with the corresponding local branch.
The exact cause in an individual stream depends on details such as OBS version, operating system, source type, stream settings, counter values and session log. OBS documentation cited here spans 2020–2024; labels can differ by installed version.
