If a forest stream’s audio slowly falls out of sync, first determine whether it is a constant offset or progressive drift. A fixed offset can often be corrected with an audio sync adjustment; a mismatch that grows over time cannot be fixed by shifting audio once. Compare a recognizable sound and its matching action near the start of a viewing period and again later before changing settings.
Tell a fixed offset from progressive drift
Use a recognizable event—a bird call, a branch snapping, or a visible splash—and compare when it happens in the picture with when you hear it. Check at the start of an observation period and at least one later point; more checkpoints make the pattern easier to identify. Note whether audio is early or late and record the approximate timestamps. A short local recording can help you compare the same moments without relying on memory.
- Constant offset: the audio is early or late by roughly the same amount at each checkpoint. A fixed sync adjustment may help.
- Progressive drift: the mismatch gets larger or changes over time. Audio and video timing are diverging, so a one-time delay or advance will only align one point.
A technical guide explains this distinction and why a fixed timestamp shift cannot correct a growing error (technical guide to audio drift).
Diagnose the stream before changing it
Check whether the viewer or player is responsible
Compare the same stream on another player or receiving device, if available. If the mismatch appears only in one playback environment, investigate that player or device before changing the encoder. FFplay can display audio/video synchronization-drift statistics and offers audio, video, and external master-clock choices for diagnosis. Those clock controls can help you inspect playback behavior, but selecting a different master clock does not by itself prove that the encoder has been fixed (FFplay documentation).

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Check dropped frames separately
In OBS, watch the dropped-frame count. OBS describes dropped frames as a network issue between the computer and the remote ingest server, commonly caused by an unstable connection or a bitrate the connection cannot sustain (OBS connection troubleshooting). A rising count calls for a connection and bitrate investigation; it is not, on its own, evidence that an audio sync offset is wrong. Keep network troubleshooting separate from timing adjustments.
Inspect timing when the error grows
For progressive drift, compare audio and video timestamps and inspect the clocks and timing behavior of source devices, capture hardware, and the encoder. FFmpeg’s timestamp documentation explains that shifting output timestamps by a common amount preserves their relative differences; a global shift therefore cannot remove a mismatch that keeps increasing (FFmpeg timestamp documentation). FFplay’s drift display can help establish whether the error changes over time.

Apply the fix that matches the pattern
If the offset is constant, adjust audio sync cautiously
- In OBS, open Advanced Audio Properties for the relevant audio source.
- Adjust that source’s Sync Offset in milliseconds. Kick Help Center says a positive value delays audio and a negative value moves it forward; use a short test stream and tune to the measured mismatch rather than treating a suggested value as universal.
- Recheck a recognizable sound/action pairing, then confirm the adjustment at another point in the test.
Kick describes 100–400 ms as a typical range, but that is Kick platform guidance, not a universal target. Its stated maximum sample rate of 48 kHz and stereo requirement apply to Kick; check the current requirements of your actual destination before using them elsewhere (Kick Help Center sync guidance).
If the mismatch grows, investigate the timing chain
Do not try to hide progressive drift with a larger one-time offset. Identify where timing begins to diverge by comparing the source, capture chain, encoder timestamps, and playback. If the source uses separate audio and video devices, pay particular attention to their clocks and the points at which their signals are captured and encoded. Change one variable at a time, keep a rollback path for live configuration changes, and observe for long enough to see whether the rate of drift changes—not merely whether one moment looks aligned. A short check can miss the slope of a problem in a 24/7 stream.

Do not assume that converting audio to 48 kHz will cure genuine clock-rate mismatch. The technical guide notes that this can improve compatibility, but sample-rate conversion alone does not correct a real clock-rate difference. Its rate-correction example concerns file processing and is not a plug-in live-stream fix (technical guide to audio drift).
Common mistakes and what to do instead
- Adjusting offset based on one moment: compare multiple timestamps first; a growing mismatch needs a timing investigation, not a single shift.
- Confusing dropped frames with sync drift: investigate network stability and sustainable bitrate if OBS reports rising dropped frames, but continue to assess audio timing independently.
- Changing several settings at once: change one variable, observe a representative duration, and retain a way to restore the prior configuration.
- Applying one platform’s audio rules everywhere: verify the destination’s current requirements instead of treating Kick’s sample-rate and stereo guidance as universal.
- Buying hardware before locating the fault: an interface or capture card is relevant only if diagnosis points to faulty source hardware; it is not an established general remedy for drift.
