If your YouTube Live stream has black bars, first check whether they are baked into the pre-recorded video or appear only in the live output. If the bars are in the file, reframe or crop the video before streaming. If the file fills its frame but the live preview has bars, check the encoder’s output canvas and how it fits or crops the source. For a conventional horizontal stream, a 16:9 canvas is the usual target; YouTube’s player can also adapt to different video shapes and devices, so not every border indicates an error.
Find where the black bars are coming from
Open the original video outside YouTube and inspect it at its original dimensions. YouTube recommends avoiding black padding embedded directly in a video because it can interfere with the player’s dynamic sizing. The player itself adapts to a video’s aspect ratio and the viewer’s device, however, so its presentation may differ from what you see in an editor. YouTube’s aspect-ratio guidance explains this adaptive behavior.
- Bars visible in the original file: They are part of the video image. Crop, resize, or reframe the media to the intended canvas before sending it to your encoder. Changing YouTube’s player settings will not remove black pixels already in the file.
- File fills its frame, but the live preview has bars: Check the encoder’s output canvas and the source’s fit, fill, or crop behavior. The source may be placed inside a canvas with a different shape.
- Bars appear only on some devices or views: Compare the Live Control Room preview with the original file and the playback device. YouTube’s player adapts to video and device dimensions, so a difference in presentation alone does not prove the file is wrong.
This is a practical diagnostic, not a named test prescribed by YouTube. Its guidance distinguishes padding inside the video from adaptive player sizing but does not identify the exact cause in an individual stream.
Set the output canvas for a horizontal stream
For a conventional horizontal broadcast, use a 16:9 output canvas and make sure the source is placed on it as intended. YouTube calls 16:9 the standard aspect ratio for computer playback and recommends it for live settings. Its examples include 1920×1080 (1080p), 1280×720 (720p), and 854×480 (480p). These are resolution examples, not guarantees about stream quality or performance. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance and resolution and aspect-ratio guidance.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Choose the intended output shape. In your editor or encoder, find the project, canvas, or output resolution/aspect-ratio controls. For standard horizontal output, choose a 16:9 resolution appropriate for your source and delivery plan.
- Choose how the source fills that shape. Use a fit or contain option if you want the whole image visible, understanding that a source with a different shape may leave empty space. Use fill or crop only if cutting off some of the image is acceptable. If your software offers a background or layout layer, you can use it to fill unused space deliberately rather than adding black padding to the source.
- Check the frame geometry. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends square pixels and progressive scan. These are useful sanity checks, but neither is established as the universal cause of black bars. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.
- Inspect the encoder preview before starting. Confirm that the image occupies the intended canvas and that no unwanted borders remain. YouTube recommends testing the encoder setup and checking the Live Control Room preview before a live stream; monitor stream quality once live. See YouTube’s live-streaming tips.
The exact menu names differ between editors, encoders, and pre-recorded-streaming services. Look for controls named canvas, output resolution, source transform, fit, fill, or crop rather than assuming every application uses the same path. YouTube’s general encoder guidance does not establish a universal settings-menu sequence.
Handle vertical and other nonstandard footage intentionally
A vertical or otherwise non-16:9 recording is not automatically defective. YouTube describes horizontal 16:9 and vertical 9:16 live workflows in applicable Live Control Room setups, including a center-cropped vertical option. Choosing a vertical presentation is separate from removing bars that are already embedded in a file. See YouTube’s live-streaming overview.

If you want vertical footage to fill a horizontal 16:9 canvas, you must choose a layout: enlarge and crop it, place it over a designed background, or accept unused space. Cropping can remove important content near the edges; a background or layout can preserve the whole image. These are creative framing choices, not automatic YouTube fixes.

For a pre-recorded YouTube stream that needs to keep running, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer or home connection has to stay on. You still need to prepare the video with the aspect ratio and framing you want before uploading; StreamNeo does not remove bars embedded in the source.
