YouTube Live Looks Blocky in Motion: Should You Change Bitrate or Resolution?

For blocky motion on YouTube Live, check stream health and match bitrate to your codec and mode. If upload capacity is insufficient, lower resolution or frame rate.

Check stream health, then match your bitrate to your exact codec, resolution, and frame rate. Raise bitrate only if your upload connection can sustain it reliably. If it cannot, lower the resolution or frame rate and use the bitrate recommendation for that mode. Blocky motion can have more than one cause, so check the encoder settings and YouTube’s error messages before changing equipment.

What to change first

  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the stream health indicator and any timestamped messages. YouTube labels some issues yellow, which may degrade quality, and red, which may prevent a stream from starting or cause viewer problems. Use the messages to guide the diagnosis rather than assuming bitrate is the cause. See YouTube’s live streaming error messages.
  2. Confirm the encoder’s resolution and frame rate. They should match the configuration selected in YouTube’s Ingestion Settings. A mismatch can produce an error even when the bitrate looks reasonable.
  3. Compare your video bitrate with YouTube’s live-ingest recommendation for that codec, resolution, and frame rate. Do not use YouTube’s separate recommendations for prerecorded video uploads.
  4. Check whether your upload connection can sustain the bitrate. YouTube recommends checking upload speed and choosing a stream quality the connection can reliably support. If it cannot sustain the chosen mode, lower the resolution or frame rate and select the recommendation for the new mode.
  5. Check CBR and keyframes. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Incorrect keyframe timing can contribute to stream problems.
  6. Test with representative movement before the event, then watch stream health and messages while live. A static test image may not reveal motion artifacts.

These checks follow YouTube’s guidance in Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and its live error guide.

Use the bitrate for your actual ingest mode

The figures below are YouTube’s recommended live ingest bitrates in Mbps, current when checked on October 3, 2026. The recommendation depends on codec, resolution, and frame rate; these are settings, not a guarantee that motion will be artifact-free. Use the row that matches the mode sent by your encoder.

Ingest mode AV1 / H.265 recommendation H.264 recommendation
720p30 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
720p60 6 Mbps 8 Mbps
1080p30 10 Mbps 14 Mbps
1080p60 12 Mbps 17 Mbps
1440p30 15 Mbps 21 Mbps
1440p60 24 Mbps 34 Mbps

YouTube also lists H.264 minimums of 3 Mbps for 720p30 and 720p60, 5 Mbps for 1080p30, and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. For AV1/H.265, its listed minimum is 2 Mbps at 720p30 and 720p60, and 4 Mbps at 1080p30 and 1080p60. A minimum is not the recommended target; use a stable mode that your connection can sustain. The table does not list minimums for 1440p modes.

Decide between raising bitrate and lowering resolution

Raise bitrate when it is below the recommendation and the connection is reliable

Fast movement can require more bits to preserve detail, so a bitrate below YouTube’s recommendation is a reasonable setting to correct if your connection can reliably carry the recommended rate. For example, YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p60 and 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 at 1080p60. Those are codec-specific live ingest recommendations, not a promise that raising bitrate alone will fix every blocky image.

Lower resolution or frame rate when upload capacity is the limit

If the connection cannot reliably sustain the recommended rate for your current mode, do not keep increasing the encoder bitrate. Lower the resolution or frame rate, then use YouTube’s recommendation for the resulting mode. A stable lower-resolution stream is preferable to choosing a higher mode the connection cannot send reliably. YouTube specifically advises considering a lower resolution when bandwidth is insufficient for the chosen resolution.

If the bitrate already matches, check other causes

Look for a resolution or frame-rate mismatch, keyframe interval problems, excessive frame rate, or interlaced video. YouTube’s live settings support progressive video; its error guidance says interlaced video is unsupported and can cause artifacts. Blocky motion by itself does not identify which setting is at fault.

Encoder settings and viewer playback

YouTube’s published live encoder guidance covers RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, up to 60 fps, CBR, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. Match the encoder’s actual output to the selected ingest configuration, and use progressive scan.

YouTube transcodes live streams into different output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. If stream health and the incoming encoder settings look correct but one viewer still sees blocky playback, the viewer’s selected playback quality or connection may also be relevant; the symptom alone does not establish the source of that viewer’s image.

Test and monitor the stream

  1. Set the encoder to the intended codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, CBR, and keyframe interval.
  2. Run a private or otherwise appropriate test stream with movement similar to the planned content, not just a static screen.
  3. Check Live Control Room’s health indicator and timestamped messages during the test.
  4. If an error appears, address the named issue, then test again before relying on the setup for a public stream.

YouTube recommends testing with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. Its live stream settings guidance explains stream-health context and general live settings.
