YouTube does not publish a universal H.264 profile or level requirement for live streams. Use a compatible preset supported by your encoder, keep its profile and level at documented defaults unless that encoder’s guidance gives you a reason to change them, and test the result in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s live guidance does specify the settings that matter around them: codec, bitrate mode, keyframe interval, scan type, and other encoder parameters.
Does YouTube require H.264 High or Main Profile?
No universal H.264 profile is specified in YouTube’s current live encoder settings guidance. It does not name High, Main, or another required profile, nor does it give a required H.264 level. YouTube says Live Control Room automatically detects the encoder settings and transcodes the live feed into formats for viewers. That does not establish a platform-wide profile or level rule. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
If your encoder has a profile selector, choose a compatible preset documented for that encoder or a device-maker preset intended for YouTube, then validate it with a test stream. If it has a level selector, retain a compatible encoder default unless the encoder’s own documentation gives a reason to change it. These are practical choices in the absence of a YouTube-wide instruction, not settings YouTube explicitly mandates.
A device preset is not a platform rule
For example, the AJA HELO v4.2r1 manual recommends H.264 Main Profile as the HELO factory default, under Advanced Settings. That recommendation applies to the HELO; it does not show that YouTube requires Main Profile, and it does not establish a universal level. Use a manufacturer’s documented preset for the specific device rather than generalizing it to every encoder. AJA HELO manual

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Which live encoder settings does YouTube document?
For RTMP/RTMPS live streaming, YouTube lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. It supports frame rates up to 60 fps. For the settings below, match the encoder to the stream you intend to send:
- Bitrate mode: CBR.
- Keyframe frequency: two seconds is recommended; do not exceed four seconds.
- Scan and pixel format: progressive scan and square pixels.
- Other advanced settings: two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC.
- SDR: Rec. 709 color space and 8-bit depth are recommended.
- HDR: YouTube’s guidance names H.265 and 10-bit depth; AV1 is not supported for HDR.
For a standard SDR H.264 stream, those documented settings provide a more useful starting point than guessing at a profile or level. Use RTMPS if your encoder supports it.

What bitrate should I use?
Choose the recommended H.264 ingest bitrate for your target resolution and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection can sustain it. These are YouTube’s published recommendations, not a guarantee that any particular connection or encoder will be stable at that rate. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate with a speed test. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
| Resolution and frame rate | Recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 360p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 480p30 | 4 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
These figures are the current recommendations shown in YouTube’s H.264 table; the page does not state a publication year. If your available upload capacity is marginal, lower the stream’s resolution, frame rate, or bitrate rather than setting an unsustainable target.

How to configure and validate a stream
- Set the encoder’s video format. Select H.264 for the settings and bitrate table above, or choose another codec only if your encoder and workflow support YouTube’s listed live codecs. For HDR, follow YouTube’s HEVC and 10-bit guidance; AV1 is not supported for HDR.
- Apply the documented stream parameters. Set CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, progressive scan, square pixels, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC. For SDR, select Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth.
- Choose resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together. Use the matching YouTube H.264 recommendation if streaming in H.264, and verify that the uplink can sustain it. YouTube recommends a speed test.
- Set profile and level only as your encoder requires. Use a compatible encoder preset or its manufacturer’s documented YouTube preset. Do not treat any profile or level as a universal YouTube requirement.
- Connect using the stream key. Use the key configured for your YouTube live stream and enter it in the encoder’s streaming settings. Keep the key private; anyone with access may be able to send a stream to your channel.
- Run a test before the event. Include representative movement and audio. YouTube advises testing before going live. Check Live Control Room’s stream health and messages, and adjust the encoder if it reports a problem.
Live Control Room automatically detects resolution and frame rate by default. Manual selection is possible with a custom stream key. At 2160p/4K, YouTube says low-latency improvement is unavailable and the stream uses normal latency. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance
Common profile, level, and stream setup mistakes
- Copying an upload-video profile or level recommendation: Upload encoding and live ingest are different workflows. Use YouTube’s live encoder guidance for a live stream; it does not prescribe a profile or level.
- Assuming “Main” is required because a device recommends it: A preset documented for one encoder, such as AJA HELO’s, is device-specific. Follow it for that device if appropriate, but do not treat it as a YouTube-wide rule.
- Forcing a level without a device-specific reason: YouTube’s live page does not provide a universal level value. Prefer a compatible default and test rather than copying an unsupported number.
- Setting bitrate higher than the uplink can sustain: The encoder may struggle to send a stable feed. Test the connection and reduce the target bitrate or stream resolution/frame rate if necessary.
- Using a keyframe interval longer than four seconds: YouTube recommends two seconds and says the frequency should not exceed four. Correct the encoder setting and retest.
- Skipping a representative test: A stream that appears acceptable with a static image may behave differently with movement or audio. Test with content resembling the real event and check Live Control Room messages.
