Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For an H.264 YouTube Live stream at 1080p and 60 fps, YouTube recommends a video bitrate of 17 Mbps and lists 6 Mbps as the minimum. Use 17 Mbps only if your upload connection can sustain it reliably; the minimum is not the quality target. These are live-ingestion settings, not recommendations for uploading prerecorded videos.
Recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60
YouTube’s live encoder table gives 17 Mbps as the recommended bitrate and 6 Mbps as the minimum for H.264 at 1080p and 60 fps. The table is specific to the codec, ingestion resolution, and frame rate. YouTube does not identify a publication or revision date for these values; its guidance was checked on October 3, 2026. See YouTube’s live encoder settings.
In practice, choose a bitrate your connection can deliver consistently. YouTube advises testing the upload bitrate and notes that the total bitrate of the stream cannot exceed the upload bandwidth available to the encoder. A nominal 17 Mbps setting is not useful if the connection repeatedly falls below it. YouTube’s streaming tips.
Related H.264 live bitrate settings
If your connection cannot reliably sustain the 1080p60 recommendation, compare the adjacent formats in YouTube’s H.264 live-ingestion table before choosing a lower resolution or frame rate.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Ingestion format | Minimum bitrate | Recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s listed live-ingestion values for H.264, not universal targets for other codecs or for file uploads. The table is published in YouTube’s live encoder settings.

- Quick Data Transfers: Accelerate your productivity with rapid data transfers using a high-speed 5Gbps USB 3.0 port and two 480Mbps USB 2.0 ports.
- 4K HDMI Display: Enhance your visual experience with a hub capable of delivering 4K resolution at 30Hz in both mirror and extend modes. Please note that this hub is compatible with MacBook (macOS 12 and newer), Windows 10 and 11, ChromeOS, and laptops equipped with DP Alt Mode and Power Delivery. Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS; YouTube recommends RTMPS.
- Video codec: H.264. YouTube also lists H.265 (HEVC) and AV1, but use the H.264 bitrate figures only for H.264.
- Frame rate: Up to 60 fps.
- Bitrate mode: CBR (constant bitrate).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval; do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 Kbps. For RTMP/RTMPS 5.1 surround, AAC is supported, with 384 Kbps listed.
- Advanced video options: Square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and CABAC are recommended. Rec. 709 is listed for SDR.

Check upload bandwidth and test before going live
- Measure the connection from the streaming location. Check upload performance under the conditions you expect during the broadcast, rather than relying only on the plan’s advertised speed.
- Leave capacity for the whole stream. YouTube says the total stream bitrate cannot exceed available upload bandwidth. If the connection is variable or shared, a setting that consumes nearly all available upload capacity may not be reliable.
- Run a test stream. YouTube advises testing before going live. Check that the connection remains stable at the chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate before relying on it for an event.
- Adjust the format if needed. If 1080p60 at 17 Mbps is not sustainable, consider 1080p30 or 720p60 using the corresponding H.264 recommendation above rather than assuming a higher configured bitrate will improve delivery.
For encoder setup and starting a broadcast, see YouTube’s guide to creating a live stream with an encoder.

Do not use upload-video bitrate figures for a live stream
Live ingestion and prerecorded uploads are separate workflows with separate guidance. The 17 Mbps recommendation here applies to H.264 video sent live to YouTube at 1080p60; it is not a bitrate instruction for exporting or uploading a finished video. For the latter, use YouTube’s recommended upload encoding settings.
Common bitrate problems and fixes
- The stream drops or becomes unstable at 17 Mbps: The connection may not sustain the selected total bitrate. Test upload performance and try a lower format that better fits the available bandwidth.
- The encoder shows a bitrate different from YouTube’s recommendation: Confirm that you are reading the H.264 live-ingestion value for 1080p60, not a setting for another codec, frame rate, or prerecorded upload.
- The stream looks poor despite a high bitrate setting: A configured number does not ensure a stable delivery path. Test the stream and confirm the encoder is actually sending at the intended settings.
- Keyframe or bitrate mode settings do not match: Set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, and keep the interval at or below four seconds, as YouTube recommends.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are running a prerecorded playlist as a continuous YouTube channel stream, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. It streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streaming, not live camera capture.
